17260'Reprinted from "The Maritime Review."' No place or date but during the reign of King George V. 2pp. 4to. Printed on the same side of one piece of shiny art paper folded to make a bifolium. Aged and stained with wear and slight loss to extremities. Photograph of Russell beneath title alongside 'Sonnet To W. Clark Russell' reprinted 'From "English Sea Pictures." By Julia D. Young Author of "Barham Beach the President's Poem." - New York.' The author laments that 'in this country it is not the fashion to ennoble those who really do something for their time and generation' such as Russell whose 'stupendous output' consists of 'fifty-seven books everyone sic of them good'. The article concludes: 'Of a surety is such a hero a national asset and the more we think of the subject the greater is our admiration for that skipper of Calcutta who first called our attention to the fact. May the fates be kinder to the stricken writer and may he long be spared to wield his able pen. The nation can better spare many more-advertised and gaudily-decorated patriots than can it Mr. W. Clark Russell - a citizen of the universal world.' No other copy of this offprint traced either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. 'Reprinted from "The Maritime Review."' No place or date (but during the reign of King George V). unknown

"When 'Willhelmine' was first published in 1764 without an author's name it caused a tremendous stir: Lessing wanted to proclaim that Germany had one more genius. The thunderous acclaim that the 26-year-old poet and court squire Moritz August von Thummel received did not deter him from consulting the criticism of older friends; and thus a second 'Willhelmine' the heavily revised final version was published as early as 1766. The reservations that the 18th century felt it had to raise about the first edition created in a single stroke in a happy hour are irrelevant today. Content and style as well as the later convictions of the poet himself justify the choice of the first version which this reprint reproduces word for word and punctuates faithfully. Luther's exit in this humorous scene can no more be misinterpreted today than the poet can be reproached for the violated unity of time in the first canto. As a whole 'Willhelmine' represents the first successful attempt to transfigure idyllic German conditions with French elegance. At the same time Thummel displays a naively noble reserve which is lacking in both the poet's teacher Voltaire and his later rival Wieland. 'Willhemine' is one of the most amiable and witty representatives of the preclassical period. Voss's Luise and Goethe's Hermann and Dorothea demonstrate the way in which the realistic idyll of the classical period is linked to 'Willhelmine' the most significant idyllic comic heroic poem.
