Versos soiled recto of one with a bit of ink bleed-through and the other with shallow loss good only. 16-6339Mid-late 19th Century. . Watercolor and gouache. 31 x 22cm. Annotated with artist's name verso and collection number. .Compare to Morgan Library Dept. of Drawings and Prints. Record ID:109832.Notes:The artist's fame stems from his sketches of Parisian society for which Baudelaire dubbed him “the Painter of Modern Life†in the pages of Le Figaro 1863. Widely traveled and a regular contributor to the growing corpus of illustrated journals such as Illustrated London News and Punch he worked swiftly and captured the sense of movement synonymous with modern urban life. This group of figures appears to be gathered in the foyer of a theater or cabaret judging from the row of gas lamps along the upper margin. The women wear small bonnets one a cape the other a jacket over voluminous crinolines a stiff underskirt introduced in 1855 and unfashionable by 1867. They speak to two men in top hats while a third seems indifferent to their presence; other similarly attired men mill about and walk through the background.Provenance:Né en 1906 à Lezay Deux-Sèvres Jacques Cathy a exercé d’abord la profession de caricaturiste à l’hebdomadaire « Le Rire ». Il a rejoint vers 1927 l’équipe du Cabaret « La Vache Enragée » conduite par Roger Toziny. Jacques Cathy poursuit sa carrière de chansonnier après le décès de Toziny en 1939 et après la guerre il conduit parallèlement une carrière d’acteur dans le cinéma. A9781501351723Hardback. New. Metafiction has long been associated with the heyday of literary postmodernism—with a certain sense of irresponsibility political apathy or outright nihilism. Yet if as is now widely assumed postmodernism has finally run its course how might we account for the proliferation of metafictional devices in contemporary narrative media Does this persistence undermine the claim that postmodernism has passed or has the function of metafiction somehow changed To answer these questions Josh Toth considers a broad range of recent metafictional texts—bywriters such as George Saunders and Jennifer Egan and directors such as Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino. At the same time he traverses a diffuse theoretical landscape: from the rise of various new materialisms in philosophy and the turn to affect in literary criticism to the seemingly endless efforts to name postmodernism’s ostensible successor. Ultimately Toth argues that much contemporary metafiction moves beyond postmodern skepticism to reassert the possibility of making true claims about real things. Capable of combating a “post-truth†crisis such forms assert or assume a kind of Hegelian plasticity; they actively and persistently confront the trauma of what is infinitely mutable or perpetually other. What is outside or before a given representation is confirmed and endured as that which exceeds the instance of its capture. The truth is thereby renewed; neither denied nor simply assumed it is approached as ethically as possible. Its plasticity is grasped because the grasp the form of its narrative apprehension lets slip. hardcover
