Most pages still in uncut signatures. Complete. Brick cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. lxiv; 352 pp. with 67 bw woodcuts. Begins with a lengthy lxiv introduction about the author by his wife. The main subject is about the asterolepsis specifically at Stromness a parish and one of the largest towns in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Asterolepses are a fish "an extinct genus of placoderms from the Devonian of North America and Europe. 18847971884. MILLER John Franklin. And Ralph Ellis. Autograph Letters Signed. Written by California U.S. Senator John Franklin Miller and the Lodi California Sentinel newspaper owner Ralph Ellis. On one side of the sheet Ellis writes to Miller in Washington DC- on Sentinel stationary and dated January 28 1884. Ellis states that since the Alaska Goverment Bill has passed the Senate he is inquiring about being appointed a U.S. Marshall in California. On the verso of the same sheet is an autograph letter to the California Attorney General stating that the Alaska territory now has a form of goverment and requests Ellis be considered as a U.S. marshall. What Alaska has to do with the appointment is beyond me. Miller was a Civil War veteran and was elected in 1880 as one of the two first California Senators to the U.S. Congress. An interesting and probably uncommon letter with two scarce signatures!!! Very Good condition tiny nicks to corner $125.00. unknown

Very Good. 2nd issue pages with Thoughts About Art on the 4th page of preliminary ads in Blanck's Binding B with the gilt wheel around the publisher's name on the spine of the book. Terracotta colored boards with gilt lettering and decorations on the front cover and spine of the book. This copy is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. There is some light bumping to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. There is some beginning wear / fraying to the corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. The endpapers are a coated brown color. "In 1877 Miller adapted his First Fam'lies of the Sierras into a play The Danites or the Heart of the Sierras. It opened on August 22 in New York with McKee Rankin as the main character. The anti-Mormon play which featured Danites hunting the daughter of one of the murderers of Joseph Smith became one of the most commercially successful in a series of anti-Mormon dramas at the time. The Spirit of the Times however attributed its success to curious audience members expecting a disastrous failure and instead discovering a good show: "The play proved to possess more than ordinary merit and if it is not a great work it is decidedly not a very bad one." The Danites was extended from a run of only a few days to one of seven straight weeks before moving to another theatre and ultimately was performed to such a degree that it rivaled the popularity of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Legendary literary frontiersman Joaquin Miller’s raw yet moving tale of life in an early California Sierra gold town where terror from the Mormon secret society of Danites bent on the extermination of the families of those they believed responsible for the killing of Joseph Smith looms over all. First issued during his sojourn in London in 1875 under the title "The First Fam’lies Of The Sierras" Miller later made the book into a play which opened in New York in 1877 to considerable success. Born Cincinnatus Heine Miller he wrote only two books under his given name before adopting the pseudonym Joaquin Miller ultimately authoring nearly thirty literary works. An inveterate adventurer he had been at one time or another an explorer miner pony express rider county judge and journalist. Respected for his poetry as well as his prose he was able to count among his friends Bret Harte and Ambrose Bierce. Miller eventually settled in Oakland California where his home today is preserved as part of the city’s Joaquin Miller Park. Very Good binding tight sound square corners sharp.
