The cover letter is reasonably short but not without interest containing observations such as 'The hole opened by Mr Eyre in 1840 Miller now says is a spring bubbling over'. Ten of Joaquin Miller's poems are collected herein and he has boldly inscribed this copy across the title: "My dear dear Mrs. Hitchcock with all my best Joaquin S. Miller 9-6-93. S.F." A very good solid copy.<br /> <br /> A crusading geologist and scientific thinker who suffered somewhat from his belief that the fossil and geological record bore out and confirmed the biblical account of the creation of Earth and that man was essentially separate from evolutionary theory and should be scientifically held separate from the lower animals. Bright shiny clean square tight and unmarked. Hinges are perfect. Previous owner's small book label on the front pastedown endpaper. Bound in the publisher's gilt-decorated green cloth. Original brown endpapers. Twelve numbers complete all published of this monthly magazine: Vol. 1 No. 1 Jan. 1873 to Vol. 1 No. 12 Dec. 1873. Included here are two Joaquin Miller poems: HAVE FAITH and A DEDICATION. The second is footnoted as follows: "The above was enclosed to us by Mr. Miller in a note from London England accompanying the Poem 'HAVE FAITH' elsewhere printed i.e. on page 202. About it he writes: 'Here are the first lines of a book of poems inscribed to the memory of my brother i.e. Dr. John D. Miller of Easton PA once your friend which you are at liberty to publish if you like.' As this new book which we believe is to be called OLIVE LEAVES has not yet been issued from the English house where it is in press we gladly print this 'DEDICATION' in advance of its appearance in England." Also in this volume is "More Local History -- New Germantown" by R. R. Honeyman pp. 116-130. This volume is a useful source of Somerset and Hunterdon County New Jersey local history and genealogy. The title page continues thus: "With Classified Local Items and Tables of Marriages and Deaths in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties from Jan. 1st 1872 sic to Nov. 1st 1873." Not in BAL or Johnson. From volume II onwards the chapter numbers are altered by hand to provide continuity from the conclusion of chapter XVI in volume I. First edition of this nicely illustrated catalogue touting the steam locomotives produced and exhibited by the historic Pittsburgh Locomotive Works during the Columbian Exposition. The locomotives featured included an experimental large Passenger Compound Locomotive the Mogul Compound Freight Locomotive for the Columbus Hocking Valley & Toledo Railway; a Freight Locomotive and Tender for the Cincinnati Hamilton & Dayton RR as well as a narrow gauge four-wheel saddle tank locomotive engine. Founded in 1865 by Andrew Carnegie and Thomas Miller the company quickly grew supplying quality large locomtovies for the Bltimroe & Ohio Acheson Topeka & Santa Fe Manhattan Elevated and the Union Pacific thriving until 1901 when it was consolidated into the American Locomotive Co.
