Death of a Salesman follows the trials of Willy Loman the quintessential American tragic hero. The original production was directed by Elia Kazan starred Lee J. Cobb and ran for 742 performances. The role of Loman has also been played by such luminaries as George C. Scott Brian Dennehy and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The play would win a Tony Award the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Circle Critics' Award becoming the first play to win all three prizes. It would also be adapted into a 1951 film directed by Stanley Roberts -- Fredric March would be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. "Arthur Miller has written a superb drama. From every point of view "Death of a Salesman" which was acted at the Morosco last evening is a rich and memorable drama. It is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing that has been written and acted" contemporary New York Times review. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1970WRCLIT57850Albuquerque: Loujon Press 1970. Folio. Quarto spiralbound book in foil wrapper and twelve lithographed broadside reproductions of watercolors plus frontis and special colophon/title leaf enclosed in publisher's folding cloth clamshell box. Fine. First edition special issue distributed ca. 1971. This present copy is one of twenty copies specially cased and distributed as a memorial fund-raiser for the publisher. It includes a frontispiece portrait of Henry Miller by Paul Giovanopoulos not included in the regular issues 1/30 numbered and signed in pencil by the artist in the margin along with a manuscript note by Mrs. Jon Webb and a specially printed title leaf for the portfolio not noted by the bibliographers who oddly denote this a second "edition" which it is not. Although not called for each of the plates of watercolors by Miller is signed by him in the margin generally near the facsimile signature in ink rather than pencil as was the case with the more exclusive regular issues. This rather awkward production was ill-starred from its initial conception when an edition of 999 copies was envisioned; reality soon sunk in and the edition was reduced to 699 copies. In the end only three hundred of the original wood cases were completed and some of the more lavish deluxe issues - A through F - were issued in far smaller numbers than intended. A portion of the edition was then offered as the "Economy" issue without the wooden case but with the reproductions. Apart from the original issue 'A' 12 copies with an original watercolor by Miller this is the most limited of the distributed issues and the clamshell box is far preferable to the wood slide-case with the famous photo of Miller astride a toilet that accompanied a portion of the other issues. Extra postage. S&J A175k. Loujon Press hardcover books

1942218661942. African American MilitaryWWIIPearl Harbor Navy Department News Bulletin and Press Release documents a pivotal wartime record of shifting racial attitudes in the United States Navy distinguished by its formal acknowledgment of Doris "Dorie" Miller's heroism at Pearl Harbor. Issued between April 3 and April 7 1942 the documents announce that the Navy would begin accepting "Negro volunteers for general service" beyond the restrictive Messman Branch marking a significant institutional response to mounting public pressure for racial equality in the U.S. Armed Forces. The bulletin prominently recounts Dorie Miller's actions during the December 7 1941 attack when he manned a machine gun under fire despite not being formally trained for combat duty. Between this expansion of Black enlistment and official commendation of Miller's bravery the publications capture a moment when African American military service and sacrifice forced a public confrontation with the Navy's segregationist structure.

Navy Department. Navy News Bulletin. Washington D.C.: Office of Public Relations Analysis Section April 3-7 1942. Together with: Navy Department. "Navy to Accept Negroes for General Service." Washington D.C. April 7 1942. Two mimeographed typescripts. Navy News Bulletin is nine pages approximately 14 x 8½ inches with contemporary handwritten annotations in ink and red marker; press briefing measures approximately 10½ x 8 inches. On page four of the buletin Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox is quoted commending the "22-year-old Texan" for "distinguished devotion to duty extraordinary courage and disregard of his own personal safety" noting that Miller "protected a machine gun until ordered to leave that bridge." The bulletin further acknowledges that more than three months elapsed before Miller's identity became public underscoring the Navy's initial reluctance to spotlight Black heroism. The press release states that "the same physical and mental entrance standards required of all Navy personnel is to be required of Negroes" assigning enlistees to District craft Navy Yards and construction units building bases beyond the continental United States while continuing recruitment for the Messman Branch.

The significance of Miller's inclusion in this report cannot be overstated: his public recognition became a rallying point for African American newspapers and civil rights advocates demanding equitable treatment and expanded combat roles for Black servicemen. Issued only four months after Pearl Harbor and at the outset of expanded mobilization these documents illustrate the Navy's cautious but progressing racial policy under the pressures of domestic civil rights activism. Light creasing handling wear and minor corner dog-ears; annotations remain clear and text fully legible. Overall condition very good. Two consequential Navy records linking Black war hero Dorie Miller's celebrated act of valor to the early wartime transformation of Black naval service. unknown

1963849551963. Rare original watercolor painting by American writer and artist Henry Miller. The painting depicts three anthropomorphic figures one with a horse-shaped head beneath a sky dotted with one star. Signed by the artist in the lower right corner of the image "Henry Miller 8/63." In fine condition. Matted and framed the entire piece measures 21 inches by 18.5 inches. In addition to his contributions to literature American writer and artist Henry Miller produced a significant body of watercolor paintings and published several books on the field. Unlike writing which Miller considered work he regarded painting as a means to recharge and relax and even used his watercolors to barter for household supplies and other services. Many of Miller's paintings feature horses and horse-like figures reminiscent of the Etruscan ceramic paintings he admired at the Louvre during his time living and working in Paris. unknown books
