1793373234J. Dodsley London 1793. 5th Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. 21 pages. This 1765 article published in The Annual Register provides a detailed account of John Harrison's groundbreaking work in solving the longitude problem at sea through the use of artificial time-keepers. Harrison an English clockmaker developed the marine chronometer a device that allowed sailors to accurately determine their longitude while at sea. His invention was crucial for safe navigation reducing the risk of ships becoming lost or wrecked due to miscalculations. The article outlines the proceedings and debates surrounding Harrison's work including his struggles with the Longitude Board which was reluctant to grant him the full 20000 prize promised under the 1714 Longitude Act. Despite proving the accuracy of his time-keepers Harrison faced political opposition and bureaucratic delays before finally receiving recognition for his achievements. Published at around the same time that Harrison's book of a similar title was published this contemporary 21 page account quotes Harrison extensively and represents the opinions and ideas regarding navigation from the perspective of the time. The whole volume extends to around 600 pages. Bound in modern but not recent brown buckram with a contrasting black leather lettering piece gilt title. Library label to the endpapers stamp on first blank and label to reverse of the title page. The first blank has a hand note stating "Given by Lt.Col. A.R. Hurst". Hurst has served with the Royal Field Artillery in the First World War. The whole volume is very clean with bright pages very firmly bound and in attractive condition. Size: 13.5 x 21 cms. He also looks at the equilibrium of a weight suspended from three elastic cords by looking via analogy to a special case of the problem for fluids."In his 1748 paper Euler in "Reflexions sur quelques loix generales de la nature." starts by declaring his commitment to the least-action principle. His expression corresponds to what we would now call potential energy so that his statement of least action formulated by Maupertuis in 1746 in statics is equivalent to the principle that a system of bodies at rest will adopt a configuration that minimizes total potential energy. 1719219230東京. Tokyo.: 日本放送協会. Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai. Showa 17 1942. Colour folding map scale 1: 10000000 54.7cm x 79.5cm chronology of building the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere on reverse. Some light browning a little darker at folds and reverse washi repairs to folds on reverse. This colour map of Asia and the Pacific published on 30 January 1942—just one month after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor—offers a striking glimpse into wartime strategy and propaganda. Remarkably despite being produced at the war's outset it accurately anticipated key battlegrounds that would define the conflict. The main map is supplemented by two inset maps: one in the upper right highlighting Japan the Hawaiian Islands and Honolulu and another in the lower left focusing on Singapore with Darwin marked along the lower edge.

The reverse side features a revealing chronological chart titled "Building Great East Asia" documenting Japan's military expansion from the 1931 Manchurian Incident through January 1942 as troops advanced across Southeast Asia. Notably two blank rows were intentionally left at the chart's end anticipating future victories to be recorded as the war progressed—a telling detail that underscores the map's dual role as both strategic document and propaganda tool. An interesting map which combines geographical precision with ideological messaging. . 日本放送協会. [Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai]. unknown

The first paper concerns the Argument over the principle of least action relating to the famous controversy - and one of the ugliest scientific controversies - between Koenig and Maupertuis. "In 1751 a sensational new argument began when S. König published some critical remarks on Maupertuis’s principle of least action 1744 and cited a letter of Leibniz in which the principle was in König’s opinion formulated more precisely. Submitting to Maupertuis the Berlin Academy rose to defend him and demanded that the original of Leibniz’ letter a copy had been sent to König from Switzerland be presented. When it became clear that the original could not be found Euler published with the approval of the Academy "Exposé concernant l’examen de la lettre de M. de Leibnitz" 1752 where among other things he declared the letter a fake. The conflict grew critical when later in the same year Voltaire published his Diatribe du docteur Akakia médecin du pape defending König and making laughingstocks of both Maupertuis and Euler."DSB - Enestrom No. 199.The second paper - Enestrom No. 200. unknown
