1679D11030Lyon: Chez Pierre Guillimin 1679. Hardcover. Very Good. Lyon: Chez Pierre Guillimin M.DC.LXXIX 1679. 8vo 150 x 80mm. 428pp. 43. Full page engraved frontispiece depicting a worshipper at the foot of the cross laden with Passion instruments crown of thorns sponge on reed withes ladder spear pillar with caption Les souffrances & la mort Dun DIEV pour nous Nôtre Continuelle. Meditation. The suffering and death of God for us is our continual meditation. Woodcut device of heraldic shield and cardinals hat with tassels on title. Woodcut chapter head vignettes and tailpieces one repeating of Evangelist John on isle of Patmos and another of Veronicas veil and woodcut historiated initials mostly birds throughout. Dedicated to LÂme Chrétienne. The Christian Soul. Italic and Roman type. Contemporary speckled calf spine gilt in compartments; joints splitting light edgewear; margins trimmed close affecting few engravings. Front pastedown with book label of Justin Godart 1871-1956 a French politician and bibliophile of Lyon. Godarts personal library stamp is also on title with the Lyonnais lion. Internet records show that the library of Justin Godart was sold at auction in Paris by Hôtel Drouot in 1957. Importantly this book remained part of the local fabric of the French city from its publication to over 275 years. Stated seventh edition of this devotional text on the Passion of Christ printed by a public brotherhood of Catholics although no other editions located. It is a highly uncommon pocket prayer book with little traceable history save the fact that this same 1679 edition appeared in an auction by Techener in 1861. Another Meditations publication by the same society appears 39 years later as the Nouvelle édition Chez Barthelemy Martin 1718 now held in the Public Library of Lyon. This elusive and largely anonymous French Catholic confraternity probably a local chapter of Lyon likely had various periods of flourishing and disbands or did not make large print-runs of their books possibly explaining the scarcity.

The aim of this brotherhoods untitled publication was to disseminate widely the prayers and reflections to be offered daily first day of the month second day etc. for the suffering of Christ. By publishing a text like this the brothers would in effect be gathering lower orders to participate in penitential exercises which is in itself an act of devotion and which would win them indulgences. In total there are 41 copperplate engravings attributed to François Houat who came from a family of printers and engravers in Northern France. These engravings are exceptional for their dramatic shadows and perspectives. As well the Guillimin publishers were known for their Catholic devotional imprints. For 31 days a full-page copperplate engraved scene of Christs Passion with captions precedes each daily reflection. The daily meditations build up chronologically ending with Christs death on the cross. Full-page engravings are also for Litany of the Passion Litany to the Infant Christ Nativity Lent repeating frontispiece Resurrection Ascension Pentecost the Blessed Sacrament and the emblemata of the brotherhood skull instruments of Passion candle and hourglass. French penitent confraternities survived during the early modern centuries as they underwent several transformations which made them more reflective of French as opposed to Italian devotional sensibilities. They enjoyed prestige and spiritual currency in Catholic society right up the Revolution. Chez Pierre Guillimin hardcover books

185427204New York 1854. Broadside 9" x 14 3/4". Printed in three columns. Lightly margin-spotted old folds else Very Good.

A rare broadside issued by Northern Democrats opposed to the Kansas- Nebraska Act which authorized the entry of slaves into that Territory and its opponents feared would nationalize slavery. The Act passed a few months earlier in 1854 would split the Democratic Party create and energize the new Republican Party and pave the way for a Republican victory in 1860. This broadside-- signed in type by Hale of New Hampshire Hiram Barney and John Jay-- is one of the earliest expressions of Northern Democratic dissent from the National Democratic Administration's Kansas policy.
The broadside denounces the "perfidy" of the Act's proponents its overthrow of the Missouri Compromise its blessings upon "the curse of slavery" and its affront to white workingmen. "The true issue is before you- economically the policy of the slave power is to depreciate the value of labor by multiplying laborers to whom no wages are to be paid. Politically the slave power aims to rule the country by a slaveholding oligarchy."
OCLC 28479577 1- Syracuse 79055522 2- AAS Yale. Not in LCP Sabin Blockson Dumond. unknown books

1943277008Kamnik district Slovenia: Tehnika RK VI 1943. 30pp. 8vo mimeographed text with images original tan wrappers with mimeographed cover.

This rare surviving pamphlet from World War II was produced by the Yugoslav Partisans the most accomplished armed resistance movement against the Axis occupation of Europe. Starting out as a guerilla group the Partisans soon created a complete underground society based on Communist principles including schools government and medical institutions financial systems and publishing presses. This pamphlet produced by one such press likely hidden in the mountains or forests of Slovenia addresses an emergent need in such a new clandestine society: that for maps. It proceeds in logical order: geographical vocabulary instructions for making field maps and later more sophisticated and symbolic drafting techniques. Within this technical know-how it also communicates tactical military advice that the Partisan guerillas employed in their battles with Axis armies. This tactical quality of the publication is most in evidence in the pamphlets many striking diagrams which demonstrate the importance of visual knowledge in situations of survival.

This pamphlet was one of many Partisan publications designed to educate protect and encourage members of the movement. It is particularly fascinating for its simple means of production since the secrecy of Partisan operations limited them to mechanical methods such as mimeographs--in witness here--as well as heliotypes linocuts and typewriting. Given its fragility the pamphlet is in excellent condition with clean text. Slight stains and some very small tears in margins. As one of the few Partisan publications on cartography this pamphlet is a rare and fascinating record of the World War II resistance.

Tehnika RK VI unknown books

With the original circular red "Autographed Copy" sticker affixed to the front board.

A book of poems written by Erickson legendary singer and songwriter for the 13th Floor Elevators during his stay at the Rusk Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Rusk Texas. The only physical evidence of his creative endeavors made between electroconvulsive shock therapy treatments which included the formation of a band with fellow inmates called The Missing Links and reportedly writing nearly 100 songs.

Working with his childhood friend George Kinney Erickson published this volume while still institutionalized. A collection of 45 poems nearly all of which are extremely positive and upbeat "Let's Have a Never-Ending Love Contest" "When You Get Delighted" and "Thank God for Civilization" are a few examples. Outside of anthologies perhaps the only volume of poetry ever published with the poems arranged in alphabetical order.

Erickson would take a different turn upon his release forming a hard rock band called Roky Erickson and the Aliens writing almost exclusively about Satanism and riffing on classic horror films. Toward the end of the 1970s he again went into a long period of mental decline and has only recently begun to perform again. A rare title nearly impossible to find with a contemporary signature.

A second collection titled "Openers II" containing Erickson's song lyrics essays and interviews was published 23 years later in 1995.

Very Good plus in moderately soiled white cloth-covered boards a gilt peace/cross symbol design on the front board gilt spine titles and no dust jacket as issued. Barnes 1791 argued on August 2 1791 and decided unanimously on August 3. West sought to pay a Rhode Island mortgage debt with paper currency rather than in gold or silver. A Rhode Island statute authorized him to do so. But the holder of the mortgage objected to payment in paper currency.
The lower court rejected West's actions. Having secured a writ of error from the lower court West appealed to the Supreme Court. "Not so fast" the mortgage holder's attorney David Barnes said. The writ of error must be obtained from the Clerk of the Supreme Court not from the lower court. The Court-- consisting of Chief Justice Jay and Justices Cushing Wilson Blair and Iredell-- heard argument on this issue. The Centinel reports the Court's decision: "The next day the Court refused to grant the rule moved for in the above cause; being unanimously of opinion that writs of errour to remove causes to this court from inferiour ones can regularly issue only from the clerk's office of this court." The word 'court' in this quotation has been damaged in this copy of the Centinel.
The case is reported at 2 U.S. 401 1791. unknown books

"That both Church and State may enjoy each their own Priviledges is the design of this Essay." The University of Glasgow's entry on OCLC names John Pollock as the author.
England's established Church causes the author to advocate a greater involvement of civil government in religious matters than prevails in the United States. But otherwise his prescription is very much like modern American conceptions of religious liberty: the Church is in charge of spiritual matters and gives "all due Respect and Obedience to the Civil Magistrate; whatever with Scripture warrant they can allow him will not be wanting." The Magistrate provides the environment for the free exercise of worship. "Even Heathen Magistrates may and ought to aid and help the Church. Whence it is that by God's Command Prayers are to be made for them." Each enclosed in a separate leaf and introduced with a quotation from scripture also dealing with suffering with each plate numbered and signed by her. 19153848Reading PA: Reading Eagle Co 1915. First edition. Quarter cloth over tri-color paper boards with metal rings at spine measuring 160 x 240mm. 319 pages. Boards rubbed with some paper worn away at extremities; rear board a bit bumped. Internally with some foxing and occasional kitchen soiling usually limited to the margins or versos of pages; in all surprisingly clean and unmarked. A scarce example of American women's efforts to use the domestic space in ways that generated international aid OCLC reports only 16 copies held at institutions with this as the only one on the market.

In the book's Foreword compiler Mary Archer states the committee's goals concisely: "This little book which mingles the recipes of to-day with the recipes of our great-grandmothers never before revealed is sent forth with the earnest hope that it may bring happiness to many American homes and earn the wherewithal to feed the starving householders of Belgium." And yet there is much to be unpacked in such a seemingly simple text. As WWI raged on across Europe German troops pushed into neutral Belgium occupying the nation in an attempt to more effectively attack France. Though hundreds of thousands fled the Belgians who remained faced forced labor military violence and coal and food shortages. American women -- many of them working for their own enfranchisement -- became concerned about how war was affecting not only their homefront but the lives of women and children abroad. Guided by Jane Addams and the Women's Peace Party relief organizations began emerging all over the country.

The Belgian Relief Committee that compiled the present work focused its efforts solely on Belgium "where food supplies dwindled ominously"; in this sense it was part of a larger humanitarian effort "an undertaking unprecedented in world history" to conduct "an organized rescue of an entire nation from starvation" Nash. Drawing on their own domestic knowledge -- deeply rooted in the traditions of their families as well as linked to modern innovation -- its members encouraged American women to find solidarity in sharing their knowledge for the common good. Each recipe bears the individual mark a facsimile signature of the woman contributing it. But meals drawn from the cookbook would combine recipes and tips from multiple women and their families. In this sense all users of the book become one family privy to the "family secrets" listed in the index. Recipes make responsible use of home and community gardens measured use of rations and emphasize nutrition as well as enjoyment. The verso of each page bears an inspiring quote each highlighting the importance of the cooking women do each day. And the funds from the book's sale assisted in feeding families that though an ocean away were not so dissimilar from those in the U.S.

An exceptional example of women organizing before the vote both to promote their own authority and to come to the aid of the international community. Presentation inscription to front blank: "S. Drostane's College. John Patrick Cash Prize for Writing -- Third Form. Midsummer 1887. Presented by Major Cash Strathpeffer." A charming copy of this scarce book of poetry by a leading women's activist it is the only first edition on the market and is held by only 10 institutions in the U.S. according to OCLC.

A surreptitiously activist selection of poems designed for children by activist Dinah Mulock Craik. "Although she had the training to become a governess she turned to writing as a profession. Her earliest work was in genres that could be quickly written and sold.consolidating Dinah Mulock's reputation as a popular writer who delineated complex emotional states with unusual power and understanding" ODNB. Here she draws on her educational background to present juvenile readers with a mixture of fanciful poems throughout which she interweaves work on social justice. On the surface the presence of titles like Violets Young Dandelion and The Midsummer Fairy suggest that the collection will be a run-of-the-mill batch of lyrics for the young. Every so often however a poem will jar the reader by bringing up serious subjects. The Young Governess for example draws attention to how family poverty can force young girls -- still children themselves -- into the workforce. "I mean to be a governess And earn my daily bread; For we have many mouths to feed -- And oh! They must be fed.Though I am but just fourteen I'm big and stout and tall And I can learn my lessons best They say among us all." Other poems like Our Black Brother on Board an English Ship push children to see the injustices of racism and slavery to find human commonality and even to question the methods by which they're taught to assume superiority. "Bring him forward to the light Our black brother -- Knock his chains off horrid sight!.His poor mother Thought him as he walked or ran All that's beautiful in man." 73838An archive of manuscript documents letters and indentures dating between 1735 and 1829 from the Alden family descendants of a Mayflower passenger the Hon. John Alden who was the seventh signer of the Mayflower compact and arrived with the Pilgrims in 1620 serving as one of the Governor's assistants. He settled in Duxbury and was one of the original proprietors of Bridgewater Massachusetts a town 20 miles from Plymouth and 26 miles from Boston where his descendants settled as farmers and leaders in the community.

The collection contains a total of 48 documents relating to a variety of members of the Alden family. Among the earliest documents are four legal documents dated between 1735 and 1737 concerning the sale of land by Daniel Alden 1691-1767 to his brother Seth 1710-84. Their great grandfather was Mayflower passenger John Alden. Seth lived all his life in Bridgewater while his brother became a magistrate and moved to Connecticut. An additional five documents in the collection record the purchase of property in Bridgewater by Seth Alden from other family members.

Other documents show that members of the Alden family were involved in military activities before and after the American Revolution. The collection contains a contemporary copy of a letter addressed to Captain Seth Alden and dated February 27 1756 ordering him to make a list of "the several persons in the regiment under your command that have been employed in his Majesty's service within the two years last past." A second document dated September 25 1755 includes a list of names with the heading: "Capt. Seth Alden having drafted those that are here after." Two additional documents one dated 1790 are related to Captain Joseph Alden likely Seth's son and provide names of the whole "train-band" in his company. An additional 11 undated documents list soldiers by name and their return of arms and ammunition while three more documents consist of lists of names one which is labeled "A list of the 2nd Company 3rd Regiment."

Another small segment of this collection contains four documents two which are printed with holographic annotations concerning the collection of taxes between 1818 and 1829 for repairing and amending Bridgewater highways. Thomas Alden was listed as the surveyor of highways in Bridgewater and it appears he compiled these lists showing the amount of the assessment for each resident. There are also two letters to Thomas from Cyrus Alden then living in Boston. Cyrus complains about the condition of a horse he left with Thomas and in the other letter attempts to convince Thomas to set up a store in Bridgewater which he is willing to fund.

The documents are toned with general wear to some and creasing from prior folds. All are legible and together represent a rich resource of local history and genealogy concerning an American founding family. unknown books
