Near fine in near fine dust jackets frontispiece in first volume both profusely illustrated with maps plans and collotype plates some folding and including large folding maps at the inside of the rear covers of both volumes. With an introduction by T.E. Lawrence. Near fine in very good dust jackets. "No one has looked so narrowly at the Arab and the life of Arabia as Doughty and no one has painted them in literature with a touch so sensitive and sure. And not only Bedawin life of whose hardships he suffered to the last wandering as one poorer than the poorest but also the life of the oasis towns of the Nejd. One can do Doughty's pages no justice by quotation. His book belongs to that rare and supreme class in which the author speaks not for himself but for all who might find themselves in like case" Hogarth. Jonathan Cape unknown books
1998108377New York: Riverhead Books 1998. Early printing of this beloved classic. Octavo original half cloth. Signed by His Holiness The Dalai Lama on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Lisa Amoroso. Nearly every time you see him he's laughing or at least smiling. And he makes everyone else around him feel like smiling. He's the Dalai Lama the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet a Nobel Prize winner and a hugely sought-after speaker and statesman. Why is he so popular Even after spending only a few minutes in his presence you can't help feeling happier. If you ask him if he's happy even though he's suffered the loss of his country the Dalai Lama will give you an unconditional yes. What's more he'll tell you that happiness is the purpose of life and that the very motion of our life is toward happiness. How to get there has always been the question. He's tried to answer it before but he's never had the help of a psychiatrist to get the message across in a context we can easily understand. The Art of Happiness is the book that started the genre of happiness books and it remains the cornerstone of the field of positive psychology. Through conversations stories and meditations the Dalai Lama shows us how to defeat day-to-day anxiety insecurity anger and discouragement. Together with Dr. Howard Cutler he explores many facets of everyday life including relationships loss and the pursuit of wealth to illustrate how to ride through life's obstacles on a deep and abiding source of inner peace. Based on 2500 years of Buddhist meditations mixed with a healthy dose of common sense The Art of Happiness is a book that crosses the boundaries of traditions to help readers with difficulties common to all human beings. After being in print for ten years this book has touched countless lives and uplifted spirits around the world. Riverhead Books hardcover books
142668HOUGHTON The Rev. W. British Fresh-Water Fishes. Two volumes. Illustrated with 41 chromoxylographed plates of fish engraved by Benjamin Fawcett after drawings by A.F. Lydon and numerous steel-engraved plates of angling locales. Folio bound in decorative publisher's brick textured cloth over beveled boards with black- gilt- and blind-stamped piscatorial vignettes and motifs on boards and spines a.e.g. London: William Mackenzie 1879. First Edition. "Houghton a Shropshire clergyman aimed his book at the fisherman rather than the naturalist and the text of which there is unusually plenty gives information about recognition feeding and breeding habits habitat bait and so on" Buchanan Nature into Art 168. Alexander Francis Lydon's plates which were printed by Benjamin Fawcett show each fish in what is meant to be its natural habitat. For this work Houghton studied the specimens in the collection of the British Museum. British Fresh-Water Fishes is notable for its incorporation of the naturalistic backgrounds of the fish habitats. The fact that this work has been reprinted in subsequent editions from the 19th century through the 1980s attests to the quality and interest of the descriptions and illustrations even though taxonomists have since revised some of the classifications. 1928P64651928. Leningrad: Izdanie Gosudarstvennogo Russkogo Muzeia 1928. Octavo 17.5 Ã 13.2 cm. Original decorative wrappers with a constructivist design by M. S. Brodsky; 72 pp. and 14 illustrations in the text some full-page. Very light soil to wrappers; overall a very good copy. First and only edition of this work about the hotly debated topic of "workers' art" and workers' IZO clubs comprised of amateur artists IZO being an abbreviation for Izobrazitel'noe iskusstvo or "Visual Art". The authors set out the history and basic principles of the "workers' art" movement and its connections to avant-garde art. The formation of such amateur groups was part of the push to democratize the Soviet visual arts in the service of mass propaganda and education throughout the 1920s. Under the direction of the artist Moisei Brodsky the disparate IZO clubs were unified under a more coherent program and proceeded to develop new forms for decorative and applied arts agitprop posters and design of new communist interiors "bringing art into life" and "making artists out of workers" two central conceits of the avant-garde. In an introductory essay the art historian Nikolai Punin argues for the regenerative quality of art made by workers with amateur training rather than by trained artists. The artist Vsevolod Voinov follows with a review of the 1925 exhibit of the IZO clubs at the Russian Museum where the works of the amateur artists were exhibited alongside those of the masters. Sergei Isakov traces the history of the movement to 1923 when the creation of such clubs was first proposed. In a longer essay Moisei Brodsky 1896-1944 the leader of the movement and the designer of the constructivist cover -- apparently inspired by Malevich's "Black square" -- discusses the search for "new realism" inherent in workers' art.
Â
The text is supplemented with photographs of the artworks exhibited at the "Iskusstvo rabochkh" Worker's art show at the Russian Museum in 1925 for which 67 IZO clubs listed by name at the end of the text provided over 1000 works. The various posters and design elements for communal cafeterias and worker's clubs are unattributed and the originals of most seem to have been lost making these photographs a rare surviving record of the contents of the show. These designs in their fragmentation of objects collaged quality and use of shadow to create volume show an unmistakable influence of Purism a movement in French painting championed by Le Corbusier among others which advocated for simplicity and precision of forms and a union of the avant-garde art with industry and technology. IZORAM an abbreviation for Izobrazitelnoe iskusstvo rabochei molodezhi or the "Visual Art of the working youth" a more focused group of worker artists was formed by Brodsky in 1928 with another exhibit of workers' art held at the Russian Museum Leningrad and later Tretiakov Gallery Moscow in 1928. The IZORAM exhibit at the Tretiakov Gallery was held at the same time and sold as part of the same ticket as a Malevich exhibit putting the abstract and "functional" avant-garde into conversation. In 1931 IZORAM was dissolved and incorporated into the newly-founded Russian Association of Proletarian Artists RAPKh. FIRST PRINTING ANNOUNCING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TRANSISTOR A DISCOVERY THAT INITIATED THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AGE. / "In 1947 John Bardeen and Walter Brattain working at Bell Telephone Laboratories were trying to understand the nature of the electrons at the interface between a metal and a semiconductor. They realized that by making two point contacts very close to one another they could make a three terminal device - the first "point contact" transistor. They quickly made a few of these transistors and connected them with some other components to make an audio amplifier. This audio amplifier was shown to chief executives at Bell Telephone Company who were very impressed that it didn't need time to "warm up" like the heaters in vacuum tube circuits. They immediately realized the power of this new technology. This invention was the spark that ignited a huge research effort in solid state electronics. Bardeen and Brattain received the Nobel Prize in Physics 1956 together with William Shockley "for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect." – Nobel Prize Committee. / In "The Transistor" 1948 is the schematic diagram showing the construction of the germanium triode or transistor a semi-conducting device which could act as an oscillator or an amplifier thereby replacing larger bulky less efficient vacuum tubes. The longer 1949 paper includes this same diagram but also contains a cutaway microphotograph of the transistor. Research by Bardeen and Brattain led them to the discovery that electron flows on the surface of a semi-conducting surface initially silicon and germanium may be modulated and controlled by "doping" the crystal with specific quantities and depositions of conducting elements. Hence was born the technology of microelectronics by employing layers of "dirty sand" to build the complex electronic circuitry that we use every day today. "The transistor revolutionized the electronics industry allowing the Information Age to occur and made possible the development of almost every modern electronic device from telephones to computers to missiles. Bardeen's developments in superconductivity which won him his second Nobel are used in medical advances such as CAT scans and MRI." – Wikip. Bardeen is the only person to have won the Nobel Prize in physics twice. The first time was for the invention of the transistor awarded in 1956. The second time was in 1972 with Leon N. Cooper and John Robert Schrieffer for a fundamental theory of conventional superconductivity known as the "BCS theory." / With: Richard P. His most important book Cronica de la Nueva Espana Chronicle of New Spain written at the command of City Council. The manuscript of this work was sent by the author to Spain in 1567 with a request for the post of royal chronicler. This manuscript was uncovered in the early 1900s uncatalogued in the National Library of Madrid as an anonymous manuscript. the first volume was published in 1914 and the second and third in 1936. The Chronicle is fragmentary since the first part which was to include the period up to the conquest of Yucatan either was never written or was lost; and the second part which was to be a history of the conquest breaks off with Columbus sending Villafuerte and Sandoval to the Pacific Ocean. Cervantes de Salazar's sources were the Letters of Cortes; the memoirs of Alonso de Ojeda and Andres de Tapia captains in Cortes' army; the Memoranda of Motilinia; the work of Lopez de Gomara; and the information gathered from others who had taken part in the conquest who were sill living in Mexico City twenty-five years later from whom he received useful information. From the Middle Ages in England and France it was believed that scrofula or "the King's Evil" could be cured by the touch of royalty; ceremonies were held in which the King would touch and "heal" hundreds of afflicted subjects.
By the late 1400s it was believed that one could also be cured by touching a type of coin called an angel which had been touched by the monarch. After angels ceased to be minted in the 1620s the same effect was said to be achieved by touching a gold medallion embossed much like the old coin.
Some monarchs touched many people. King Henry IV of France touched up to 1500 at one time. The last English monarch to carry out this practice was Queen Anne who died in 1714 but it continued in France. Louis XV touched more than 2000 scrofula sufferers and the last French monarch to do this was Charles X in 1825 Science Museum London. Cf. Eight lines of verse above the image describe her "supposed grandure"; another eights lines below describe her "native poverty." The verses suggests she was once a fine lady; now she is a deformed street beggar.

James Caufield in Portraits Memoirs and Characters of Remarkable Persons 1818 discusses this print. "This miserable wretched drunken object who was blind of one eye used to annoy the passengers in the streets of London while sober with licking her blind eye with her tongue which was of a most enormous length and thickness; indeed it was of such a prodigious size that her mouth could not contain it and she could never close her lips or to use a common expression keep her tongue within her teeth.

This wonderful feat of washing her eye with her tongue was exhibited with a view of obtaining money from such as crowded around her and no sooner had she obtained sufficient means but she hastened to the first convenient liquor-shop to indulge her propensity in copious libations and when properly inspired would rush into the streets with all the gestures of a frantic maniac and roll and dance about until she became a little sobered which was sometimes accelerated by the salutary application of a pail of water gratuitously bestowed upon her by persons whose door-way she had taken possession of as shelter from the persecuting tormenting's of boys and girls who generally followed her. It should seem from the verses within the print this woman had been used in early days to scenes of gaiety and splendor." Pp 108-110

While attempts have been made to identify the actual subject represented in this etching these attempts have always failed. The most likely intention of this etchings is depict a naturalistic view of life that finds beauty to be brief and time to be brutal.
