It was written by employees for employees to present information of interest to those engaged in the plant, traffic, commercial, operating, accounting and other departments of the service. A most unusual and wonderful item. Appears to be a privately bound collection of early Calgary periodicals dated November 17th, 1916 through April 14th, 1920. Sturdily bound in red cloth with no external markings. Measures just over 2" thick, 11.5" high and 9" wide. Many issues included although we are not sure if a full run is contained. No table of contents or index. Contents tanned with age, otherwise sound. Captures an exceptional and vintage slice of early Calgary and Alberta history. Replete with contemporary advertisements. 4 vols., 8vo., Fourth Edition, on laid paper, with engraved portrait frontispiece (by Baker after Reynolds) and 2 large folding facsimiles, frontispiece and facsimiles lightly age-soiled, some mild offsetting to title, neat signatures (one contemporary) on front endpapers; attractively bound in contemporary half calf, marbled boards, neatly rebacked in calf to style, backs with flat bands ruled in gilt, second and fifth comparrtments with red leather labels lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, a very good, bright, clean copy. 'With this edition began the practice…of enlarging the text with unpublished letters which had not been available to Boswell…A considerable number of new notes were also added, including some by Dr. Kearney' (Pottle, pp.171-2). The frontispiece is from the same plate as that used in the second and third editions, but the two facsimiles are dated 1 May 1804. An attractive set in sympathetically restored period binding. Single sheet, 8vo., a near fine copy. Signed simply 'Tedder' in the writer's usual manner, the letter is written to Geoffrey Moore, founder of the Buccaneers Cricket Club, and demonstrates the airman's keen and continuing interest in the sport. Tedder was President of Surrey County Cricket Club from 1953 to 1958. The letter regretfully declines Moore's invitation to attend the Buccaneer's annual dinner (held at Lords): 'I've already got a date I can't budge!'. Marshal of the RAF Arthur William Tedder, 1st Baron Tedder (1890-1967) was one of Britain's most distinguished air commanders. Educated at Whitgift School and Magdalene College, Cambridge, he transferred from the Dorsetshire Regiment to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916, serving in France from 1915- to 1917 and in Egypt from 1918 to 1919. He was then commissioned in to the (new) Royal Air Force where was appointed Director of Training from 1934 to 1936, after which he became Commander RAF Far Eastern Forces. During WWII he was head of RAF Middle East Command, controlling Allied air operations in the Mediterranean and North Africa, including the evacuation of Crete and the defeat of Rommel; his air power was a vital component of Montgomery's victory at El Alamein. Having been promoted to Air Marshal, Tedder then took part in the early planning for D-Day, and was subsequently appointed Deputy Supreme Commander Allied Forces Europe (the most senior such British position) immediately beneath General Eisenhower, on whose behalf he signed at the German Surrender in 1945. In 1947 he delivered the Lees Knowles lecture, afterwards published as 'Air Power in War'. Following his retirement he served as Chancellor of Cambridge University and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors of the BBC. Founded in 1930, The Buccaneers is one of the oldest and most famous 'wandering' clubs in English cricket (a 'wandering' club has no fixed home ground but plays consistently as an 'away' team relying on the hospitality of the 'home' clubs against which it competes). The Club's history has been written twice, by Clifford Bax in 1956 and more recently by Howard Spencer. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY TEDDER ARE EXTREMELY SCARCE.
Lot of 5 original single-sheet maps in copperplate engraving of fine quality. Fine, strong impressions on heavy handmade paper with ample margins all round. First, original state, unaltered by later colouration. Preserved flat in acid-free, pH-balanced, buffered archival paper. In fine condition. - - Full individual descriptions are available on request. - - First edition. Willem Albert Bachiene (1712-1783), Dutch clergyman, later a professor of geography and astronomy at the Illustere School, Maastricht. Well known cartographer. The 3-volume "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land, alsmede andere landen in de H. Schrift voorkomende," is considered among his most important works. It was published in Utrecht between 1763-1768, and included a suite of 12 fine geographical maps of the Holy Land and its neighbouring lands which Bachiene made during a period of ten years, the first in as early as 1758. The map offered herewith is taken from this suite. Other important cartographic works of the Holy Land by Bachiene were included in the so-called "Jehovah Bible" i.e. "De Gansche H. Schrift, Vervattende alle de regelmatige Boeken des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments (.) Gods Gedenk-Naam Jehovah onvertaald gehouden" published in 1762 by N. Goetzee of Gorinchem, shortly before the present map first appeared in book form. Whereas other single-sheet maps by Bachiene are in relative abundance, the works from "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land" are very scarce, seldom found in any state, practically unavailable in their original, uncoloured state. - - Note regarding this lot: Each of the 5 maps in this lot is offered also separately.
