1967393485San Francisco 1967. Unbound. Good. A collection of snapshots taken at the New Year's Wail concert on January 1 1967 at the Panhandle near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco with some accompanying images. Various sizes. Condition is overall good with tape remnants or shadows mostly in the margins. Several are captioned.

The "The New Year's Wail / New Year's Whale" was organized by the Hells Angels as a thank you to and a celebration of the Haight Ashbury community for "crowdfunding" the bail money for their member Chocolate George after a traffic arrest. The Diggers helped to promote the event which featured Big Brother and the Grateful Dead as well as Orkustra with Bobby Beausoleil later of the Manson Family. The bands played on a flatbed truck and the photographer was clearly very close to the bands probably on the truck itself. Of the dozen candid photographs of the concert all but one the only color image of some Hells Angels and their bikes in the crowd feature the bands: Joplin appears in at least eight of them and Jerry Garcia in three with other shots of other band members in various combinations. Also accompanied by several other images: two color images of Joplin singing date stamped in May 1967 damage to the margins although the images of Joplin are largely clear. Also with a color photo of a psychedelically decorated hippie crash pad as well as another 14 images of several young men presumably the photographer and his friends: one with a motorcycle several in military garb sitting on a dock smoking pot one on a ship's deck and several overseas in Thailand and the Philippines. unknown

Later half calf over speckled boards; front cover loose some minor excisions as noted above preliminary leaves and some corners and margins repaired some margins shaved close with loss scattered stains overall a good compact copy rich in engravings.

Merians engravings and Gottfrieds trilingual chronicle together an iconographic compendium to the Bible the Icones Biblicae published between 1625 and 1630 by Zetzners in Strassburg. The printers De Bry in Frankfurt produced another edition of the same title from 1625 to 1627. After 1631 other editions of the "Icones Biblicae" appeared in Amsterdam and Cologne. The initial work was conceived as a monumental collection of great scenes from the Bible designed by Merian and accompanied with short descriptive texts in German Latin and French by German theologian and historian Johann Ludwig Gottfried. Swiss-born engraver Matthaeus Merian the Elder lived in Frankfurt most his life where he produced several religious historical and topographical publications for the European market. Perhaps best known for his detailed prints of European cities Merians biblical imagery both of Old and New Testament compositions were also well integrated into the vernacular culture of his time. Merians superb engravings are reminiscent of seventeenth century European landscapes plentiful in period details and notable for Baroque-ized exaggerations consisting of raucous figures in high drama situations. It is purported Rembrandt van Rijn consulted a copy of the "Icones Biblicae" for ideas for his compositions. OCLC locates only one copy but that of De Bry in a US institution. This Zetzners edition is uncommon outside Europe. Altogether a scarce work and commonly lacking a few engravings which were probably pulled for artistic reference. 163238184London: Printed by M. Flesher for Rich: Royston in Ivie-lane next the exchequer Office London 1632. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. This is the third edition of Montaigne's influential and famous essays and on the title page it says that whereunto this edition is now more newly added an index of the principal matters and personages mentioned in the book. The celebrated architectural illustration that is engraved on the title page is by Martin Droeshout responsible for the iconic portrait of Shakespeare in the First Folio also appeared in this edition for the first time Montaigne is credited with pioneering the modern essay form. His Essays are a collection of personal reflections exploring a wide range of topics from human nature to philosophy literature and personal experiences. Published in three books they were written and revised over several decades with the first edition appearing in 1580. The remarkable modernity of thought apparent in Montaigne's essays coupled with their sustained popularity made them arguably the most prominent work in French philosophy until the Enlightenment. Their influence over French education and culture is still strong. Wikipedia They were originally written in Middle French and published in the Kingdom of France. Montaigne's stated design in writing publishing and revising the Essays over the period from approximately 1570 to 1592 was to record "some traits of my character and of my humours." Montaigne's Essays went through several stages of publication evolving from a two-book work in 1580 to a final posthumous edition in 1595. The first English translation of Montaigne's Essays was published in 1603 by John Florio. This translation titled The Essayes or Morall politike and millitarie discourses was a significant event in English literature introducing the French philosopher's work to an English-speaking audience.

Bound in full brown leather; the spine has raised bands with titling and ornaments in gilt. 19450009118DIJON FRANCE FR. Very Good. 1945. On offer is the 1945 Come-Back Diary of the 602 Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion detailing the few months of the battalions involvement in World War II. The document is an incredibly unique and interesting piece of World War II memorabilia. As well each and every newsletter in the collection was written or compiled by Sidney Bernstein one of the most famous music promoters of the 1960s and the man who booked the Beatles among many other in their first tour of America and helped jump start the British Invasion in the mid-1960s. The Come-Back Diary contains within it all the volumes of the 602nd AAA Gun Battalion daily newsletter published between April 1945 and October 1945. Bernstein and the 602 AAA Gun Battalion are stationed in Dijon France for the entirety of the newsletters production The first issue of the first volume April 11 1945 has the headline Your 3 Minutes Gazette Goes To Press!! and feature short paragraphs under the titles Feature Story Music Dept. Your Daily Comic Strip Gossip Column Editorial War News and Tonites Movie. Other sections featured throughout the seven month run include Afterthoughts Religious Services Notes from a G.I.s notebook Letter of the Day Sports Personalities Predictions Sinatra what is the strange phenomena called Frank Sinatra and many many more. As the issues progress the newsletter takes on a more conversational tone dealing less with the events coming up than with the general feelings and daily life in Dijon in the waning months of the War as well as including more personal thoughts from Bernstein himself. For example: Vol. 2 No. 13 June 26 1945. Brother is hot.He cusses and cusses and cusses - The Sun-baked tents - the dirty sons of the Rising Sun - the Sun itself.but then he remembers - an intensely cold winter night on guard in Germany - reports on the hot loop Nazi paratroopers dropping all around - his fingers almost froze to his M1 that long long night and how he prayed that hed see the sun once more. The guys stops cursing.peels off his OD shirt and strips to the waist leaves his tent for a slug of water.smiles at the sun.and goes to work on the Tuesday edition. In total the newspaper is filled with items and tidbits from back home in the U.S. entertainment and lifestyle information for the serviceman of the Six-Oh-Second. Bernstein is a very competent and very enjoyable writer throughout and does an exceptional job of conveying emotion wit and the experience of daily life as a soldier in the Dijon. Days of heightened emotion such as FDRs death Hitlers death VE day VJ day the opening of Bernsteins GI Nite Club and many others in the last year of the war are especially interesting. Bernstein is an incredibly adept and interesting writer and these days show off his talent especially well. The newsletters continue until September 24 1945. There is one later newsletter included in the collection from October 13th. This is on the first page of the compilation and does an excellent job of setting the scene of the post WW2 landscape as well as Bernsteins feelings of writing the newsletter during the war. It is one of the most interesting newsletters in the collection account for roughly 85 pages. Each page seemed to be set and printed by Sidney Bernstein himself. The pages are in good shape showing occasional rips and tears but very little other than that. Some pages have smudging of the ink but nothing to affect the legibility of the content. The cover is a simple brown paper. It seems the front cover used to say 602 AAA COMEBACK DIARY with a drawing of what looks to be the Statue of Liberty however the drawing and letters have faded almost completely and are very difficult to make out. There is no spine and the book is bound by thread. This would make an absolutely amazing document of World War II history as it presents a nuanced and comprehensive picture of the life of servicemen in Dijon as the War came to end. As well this would be great for anyone interested in the incredible life of Sid Bernstein before he helped change the world of music forever. The work is extraordinary in many ways and it not only served as the basis for the Arabia-expedition it also constitutes a forerunner of modern bible science that would begin to emerge a few decades later. Johann Davis Michaelis 1717-19 was a theologian and orientalist whose fame today rests upon the present work and upon the fact that he was responsible for the first scientific expedition to Arabia Felix namely that of Niebuhr. In 1753 he had come up with the idea for the the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition 1761-1767 and had gotten the Danish minister Bernstoff to agree to it. In 1760 when the expedition was becoming a reality Michaelis recommended Niebuhr as a participant and he outlined the entire purpose of the trip - namaly the list of 100 questions that he prepared and published for the members of the expedition in order for them to answer in the course of the voyage. For all intents and purposes Michaelis was the spiritual father of the Arabia-expedition. As a theologian and an orientalist many of Michaelis' questions have root in the Bible. But unlike many other theolgians of the time Michaelis sought to shed light over biblical themes through sources outside of the Bible - especially from the Middle East not least Arabia. In this regard his 100 Questions also came to be a precursor to the emergence of modern bible science.Although the expedition would have never taken place had it not been for Michaelis and his 100 questions - many of which are also purely naturalistic - he could not quite have foreseen the scientific outcome of the expedition. He had not foreseen that Niebuhr would become the founder of the scientific description of the Arabian peninsula and that Niebuhr's notes would become the basis for the first decipherment of Mesopotamian and Persian cuneiform. On the contrary he was probably quite disappointed that his questions were not all answered as thoroughly as the had anticipated. Adding to that Niebuhr's answer to the questions "only" takes up six pages in the preface to "Description of Arabia" although the text itself contains many detailed explanations and answers to Michaelis' questions. hardcover
1755ABC_474521755. Manuscript of 24 pages 6 printed maps on cardboard. This wonderful logbook details the journey of a French captain from Manila to the Maluku Islands in todays Indonesia. The journey took place during the months of March to May of 1755. The captain of the ship recounted with great detail the events of every day of the journey with detailed daily accounts of the weather winds manoeuvres of the ship its departures anchorages and precise coordinates at every point of the journey. The captain furthermore had a keen eye for the geographical and nautical details along the journey. He recounted the exact locations of for example sandbanks and bays where ships and their crews can take provisions and fresh water. The accounts are detailed and captivating: "After our boats were back on board we set sail . in the afternoon to moor under the old Portuguese fort on the Solor island Indonesia the winds for the tide were fresh at 1:34 a.m. . sand and gravel and then I went back to mooring. The pavilion of the fort . the village is under the said fort at 3 cables from us .". The captain goes on to describe the geographical features of the islands as well as other places en route with great detail. Curiously we find inscriptions in Spanish and the names of one don Phelipe Qui who describes himself as el piloto and one Padre Don Estevan de Melo. The latter might be identical with Don Estevan Roxas y Melo a native of Lima Peru and secretary to the Archbishop of Manila Rodriguez since 1736. Roxas y Melo was part of the 1751 reconstruction of the Cathedral of Manila working under the auspice of the Italian architect Juan de Uguccioni. The logbook comes with six printed maps partly illustrating the journey of the captain pasted on contemporary cardboard. They depict the Bay of Sulavesi with the city of Bantang Pitcairn the coast of New Guinea the coast of Queensland the Santa Cruz Islands in the present-day Solomon Islands and Alejandro Selkirk Island. The plates stem from the French translation of James Hawkesworths An Account of the Voyages Hawkesworth Relation des voyages entrepris par ordre de sa Majesté Britannique actuellement regnante; pour faire des découvertes dans l'hemisphère meridional Paris 1774.Some holes on the first sheet not affecting the text. Small water damage some slighlty affecting the text. Remnants of seals on last page. Otherwise in good condition. unknown

Reynard the Fox 'hero of several medieval European cycles of versified animal tales that satirize contemporary human society. Though Reynard is sly amoral cowardly and self- seeking he is still a sympathetic hero whose cunning is a necessity for survival. He symbolizes the triumph of craft over brute strength usually personified by Isengrim the greedy and dull-witted wolf. The main literary tradition of Reynard the Fox descends from the extant French 'branches' of the Roman de Renart about 30 in number nearly 40000 lines of verse. The facetious portrayal of rustic life the camel as a papal legate speaking broken French the animals riding on horses and recounting elaborate dreams all suggest the atmosphere of 13th-century France' Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature.
