19791235081979. Original poster promoting the release of the 1979 album the band's second collaborative effort with Brian Eno.

Like its predecessor "More Songs about Buildings and Food" "Fear of Music" accomplished several things at once. A rollicking and today classic single "Life During Wartime" put the record immediately in the black but at the same time the band took major stylistic steps forward evidenced the most by the leading track "I Zimbra" incorporating loops and African grooves appropriated and/or created by Eno and Byrne the two also worked that year on the now-classic ambient record "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts".

In 1979 the idea of sampling was new and not in the least trivial as bits of magnetic tape had to literally be cut and spliced by hand in order to overlay sounds from other sources onto new material and both this record and "Ghosts" were time-intensive groundbreaking efforts not just in pop music but in the world of textured and forward-looking music in general.

35 x 23 inches. 1822008040Washington D.C.: The National Intelligencer 1822. Newspaper. Very Good.

A complete four-page newspaper of 5 December 1822 recounts the battle between the American Schooner USS Alligator commanded by Lieutenant William Howard Allen of the West Indies Squadron and three pirate ships probably commanded by Diabolito off the coast of Cuba on 9 November 1822. It occupies over 18" of front page column space and has a large capitalized headline. The paper is toned but supple; generally clean with some staining at the upper right. The spine appears to have been neatly mended. The paper reports details of the encounter.

At the time of battle the pirate force had in its possession five US merchant vessels. The USS Alligator although out-gunned and out-manned had an experienced crew which recently captured another pirate ship after a bloody battle and its commander Lt. Allen had previously commanded the USS Argus when it engaged the HMS Pelican during the War of 1812.

Allen and his crew manned launches from the Alligator in an attempt to board the principal pirate vessel the Revenge which fired upon the Americans with grape and roundshot. Rather than attempt to fight off the boarding party the pirates abandoned the Revenge and fled to their other two ships.

As Allen turned his boats to continue the attack they came under withering fire from the pirates. In an attempt to rally his men Allen stood up and was cut down by musket fire. The two remaining pirate ships fled the battle during the resulting confusion leaving the pirate ship Revenge and the five merchant ships with the Alligator.

Allen became an immediate naval hero and his name was used as a rallying cry a year later when the Navy defeated another pirate force and killed its leader Diabolito in the same area.

The National Intelligencer books

1945140941374Hunt Idaho: War Relocation Authority 1945. First Edition. Near Fine. A WRA memo to all staff members helping to prepare Minidoka's overall history. Two stapled long sheets folded in uneven thirds. Pointers and guide posts given by Project Director W. E. Rawlings and Acting Reports Officer Richard A. Niver in response to questions posed by various staff members regarding statistical-functional and personal narrative reports. The Minidoka War Relocation Center was formally closed on October 18 1945 and this memo dated November 1 1945. Together with a checklist for employees document detained families leaving Minidoka; one single sheet printed on recto only.

The final days of Minidoka were "confusing and cumbersome" and some felt leaving was nearly as chaotic as arriving with camp officials hustling bewildered inmates onto trains. "Inmates also had to make their own travel arrangements. So-called "special" cars or coaches-essentially train cars that were reserved for Minidokans only-were sought after by both inmates and administration since they seemed to offer at least a degree of safety and comfort. But the scheduling of the "special" coaches was irregular and they sometimes were canceled at the last minute since troop movements always had first priority. Those leaving Minidoka took a bus to the Shoshone train station about twenty-seven miles away from which trains took them back to the West Coast or to destinations to the east. Especially in the last weeks of the camp various administrative staffers met inmates at Shoshone to help with last minute details and make sure everyone got on the train.
