1903003671Colombo Ceylon now Sri Lanka 1903. Half Morocco. Very Good. 8vo. 18.5 by 14.5 cm. iv 44 pp. the leaves made of heavy card stock. The author a colonial officer for the British army would later publish "The Annals of the King's Royal Rifle Corps" which contained his color illustrations of uniforms arms and equipment and other works. From this work it is clear he had artistic aptitude and as an officer in Ceylon undoubtedly a lot of free time to indulge in the creation of this work. It would seem that this work was written with an eye on possible publication but that did not come to be. Few will not be charmed by the many vignettes of badges and coats-of-arms mostly rendered in bright watercolors with some done as ink drawings. Also illustrated are flags and banners. Some of the tissue guards are heavily foxed while the cards proper sometimes have offsetting from this soiling. A large chipped loss to the leather spine with a partial loss of one letter of title. Still a very handsome album.

books

184255360Providence: Knowles & Vose printers 1842. 8vo pp. 27 1; self-wrappers; moderate foxing edges worn with minor breaks; good. Signature of Sam Cole at the top of the title page. Known as the Landholders' Constitution from the fact that only owners of real estate and their eldest sons were allowed to vote for delegates to the Convention adopted by the charter government in Providence. "Once again reformist agitation prompted the General Assembly to authorize a constitutional convention this one scheduled for November 1841. The agitators correctly assumed that the Assembly's act was insincere and opportunistic merely designed to sap vitality from the Rhode Island Suffrage association's cause and no more intended to be the vehicle of change than those previous "do-nothing" conventions summoned to appease the disfranchised in 1824 and 1834. As a result of this disbelief members of the association decided upon an extralegal course to attain their ends. Drafting Dorr to lead them they exhorted the adult male citizenry to disregard the landholding qualifications and go to the polls to elect delegates to a "People's Convention" which would meet in October 1841. The elections were duly held late in August and within six weeks the reformers' convention presented the fruit of its deliberations to the white male populous of Rhode Island for ratification" Patrick T. Conley in his Introduction to The Broadsides of the Dorr Rebellion compiled by Russell J. DeSimone and Daniel C. Schofield. Not that this mattered at the time to the charterist government who adopted this constitution to replace the Charter of 1663 from the time of King Charles II but with little change in voting rights and requirements. 005597Paris: Jacques Lafitte. Stiff Wraps. Very Good. Scarce with no recorded copies on OCLC and not in BNF catalogue. N.d. 1930s and possibly Oblong 4to. 21 by 27 cm. 24 pp. A farcical story of an eccentric professor who chases after a sailor around the globe because a stamp from his collection was stolen. Along the way the professor has all kinds of contretemps with the natives -- Congolese Tahitians Martiniquians etc. Written and illustrated with a brio that is unbounded by bigotry or political rectitude as we now know it and a prism on rascist attitudes of an earlier era. Loosely in the spirit of Tintin stories or even Babar a little and contemporaneous with the early editions of both of those. The dating is tricky. There is the number 1943 indicated in small print on the final leaf but we don't think it is plausible that this was printed that late when Paris was under occupation. More plausible is an issuance in conjunction with the Coloniale Exposition which occurred in 1931 but there is no concrete evidence of this either. From the physical traits and the general style of the production though we are reasonably confident that it hailed from the thirties. Light wear.

Jacques Lafitte paperback books
