From the library of Professor George M Foster. Pagination follows its publication in a volume of the Anales del Museo Nacional de Mexico. First edition.

Jacinto de la Serna was a 17th-century priest who recorded extensive information regarding the survival of native religious customs. Born in Mexico he gained a doctorate in theology at the University of Mexico of which he was later rector three times. As a young priest he served for 14 years in parishes of the Indians during the same time that Ruiz de Alarcon was making his investigations. He spent most of his later career in Mexico City where he was one of the curates of the cathedral during three periods. He held important offices in the administrations of the archdiocese. He served as visitor general of the archdiocese under two archbishops. In 1656 he composed a work entitled Manual de ministros de indios para el conocimiento de sus idolatrias y extirpacion de ellas first published in 1892 in which he drew together the fruits of his own experience and the results of his studies. The purpose of the work was to acquaint the religious ministers with the superstitions of the Indians so that they could better instruct their Indian charges. The work may be divided into four parts. In chapters 1-5 he traces the history of the efforts to put an end native religious practices. In this section he gives valuable details of his own activities and of those of his predecessors such as Pedro Ponce de Leon and Hernando Ruiz de Alarcon. Chapters 6-11 are a study of the Aztec calendar for which he drew heavily on Martin de Leon. Boturini later used some of his material. Chapters 12-27 treat of religious beliefs and practices of the Indians. Large sections were take directly or in paraphrase from Ruiz de Alarcon including the latter's translations of Indian chants and prayers. Chapters 28-33 propose remedies against the continued practice of the native religions.

George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. 184425849Charleston 1844. 40 pp. Bound in modern quarter red morocco and marbled paper over boards. Minor scattered foxing Very Good plus.

A rare Southern Nationalist tract opposing the election of Henry Clay in 1844 warning of the imminent threat to the South's cherished institution of slavery supporting the Texas annexation and denouncing the North's imposition of protective tariffs.
It begins with Langdon Cheves's Letter opposing separate State secession by South Carolina. Though Northern aggressions-- including the recent rejection of the Treaty to Annex Texas-- and the Tariff are an "insufferable and insulting oppression.I do not think one State ought to resist alone." He urges grass-roots organization to ready the South for mass secession. For this stance Cheves was harshly criticized by Carolinians who urged a go-it-alone policy. His Letter is followed by an early Daniel Webster speech embracing the South's opposition to protective tariffs and support of free trade. John Quincy Adams's Letter illustrates northern "fanaticism" on the slavery issue; Andrew Jackson's Letter of August 1844 supports the annexation of Texas; and James Towles's tract 'The South in Danger' warns against the election of Henry Clay who opposes annexation.
Howes S790 AI 44-5791 and Streeter 1535 each recording a variant issue only. unknown books

Some staining and soiling to a few letters but a very good lot of more than 100 pieces of correspondence relating to the publication of an important American firearms book perhaps the basis for another book or paper exploring the creation of the first. 2931. A revealing correspondence between publisher and author discussing in minute detail the evolution of a book from an initial manuscript rejected out of hand through negotiation over content design and other details to the editing and publishing of an important title covering a seminal aspect of the American arms industry.
Edwards 9 March 1952: "Colt has been a forgotten man in American history. Professor Morse has been published a dozen times while Polk Zach Taylor Old Hickory Sam Houston Whistler and all the dozens of men that moulded mid-nineteenth century America from the dry dust of the West and the blood-wet mud of Manassas have found their chroniclers often. It is in an effort to show in some measure just where Samuel Colt fits in this scene this burnt-oil hum of the late Industrial Revolution and the real West more wild than any movie that I am doing this work. To place him in context among the guns that were his life-work and to give him again a spirit of reality that once he had as alive is my purpose and design."
Stackpole 18 March 1852: "We believe that the technical and detailed part of the Colt Revolver should be accented with the biographical material secondary. We should like to see the details and particulars of the many early Colt revolvers to settle in the minds of collectors just what is what and why. We feel that this sort of technical work would also sell to the average shooter who of course greatly exceed collectors in numbers."
The ensuing letters chronicle the debate between author and publisher author and editor and author and publisher's employees as they refined each others needs discussing in detail every facet of the book's content design production and marketing eventually producing a work of lasting value still regarded as the best book on the subject.

unknown books
