1935100344Washington March 14 1935. 1935. Fine. - Over 105 words typed on 9-3/4 inch high by 7 inch wide "The White House / Washington" embossed stationery with the "Whiting's Woven Linen" watermark. In his letter President Roosevelt accepts his controversial Solicitor General J. Crawford Biggs' resignation "I accept your resignation with very real regret. For nearly two years you have discharged your important duties with distinction and success". Praising Biggs' accomplishments in office FDR concludes "That you feel constrained to return to private practice of your profession I can well understand. You carry with you my best wishes and my sincere thanks for the public service you have rendered." Signed "Franklin D. Roosevelt". Folded for mailing with an indentation from a paper clip along the top else fine. <p>The North Carolina lawyer and politician James Crawford Biggs 1872-1960 helped to found the North Carolina Bar Association and later served as a judge of the Superior Court of North Carolina. He served as a special assistant to the U.S. Attorney General in filing charges against the Southern Pacific Railroad in California. As everyone thought that FDR would appoint Felix Frankfurter to the post of Solicitor General Biggs cleverly sought support of those whose opinion would have weight with the President as their second choice instead of competing with Frankfurter. Thus when Frankfurter declined Biggs was in the position of being next in line. A successful country lawyer his hoarse voice and high-blown lengthy presentations did not endear him to the Supreme Court. According to a Times Magazine article "Once in the midst of an hour's oration to the court Mr. Biggs was interrupted by Chief Justice Hughes: 'Mr. Solicitor General you have talked about 45 minutes already. You had better take the next 15 minutes telling us what you want this court to do.'" His subordinates bright young New Dealers resented his emphasis on how impeccably they dressed rather than taking more time in preparing the Government's cases. The March 25 1935 issue of Time magazine quoted the text of President Roosevelt's letter accepting J. Crawford Biggs' resignation. Washington, March 14, 1935. unknown

The fourth title in the series. <br /><br /><em>The Bishop Murder Case</em> 1928 is the fourth in a series of mystery novels by S. S. Van Dine about fictional detective Philo Vance The detective solves a mystery built around a nursery rhyme. <em>The Bishop Murder Case</em> is believed to be the first nursery-rhyme mystery book.<br /><br />The story involves a series of murders taking place in a wealthy neighborhood of New York City. The first murder of a Mr. Joseph Cochrane Robin who is found pierced by an arrow is accompanied by a note signed "The Bishop" with an extract from the nursery rhyme "Who Killed Cock Robin". This crime takes place at the home of an elderly physicist with a beautiful young ward and a private archery range. District Attorney Markham finds the circumstances so unusual that he asks his friend Philo Vance to advise upon the psychological aspects of the crime. Further murders connected with the physicist's family and neighbours are accompanied with similar extracts from Mother Goose such as the case of Johnny Sprigg "who was shot through the middle of his wig wig wig." Midway through the book an elderly woman confesses to the crimes but this possibility is discounted by the police for physical reasons and by Philo Vance for psychological ones. Vance and the police luckily discover the kidnapping and confinement of a little Miss Moffatt before the child suffocates in the closet in which she has been locked. Vance finally realizes the significance of one character's pointed reference to The Pretenders a play written by Henrik Ibsen; Bishop Arnesson of Oslo was a prominent character in the play. Vance arranges a spectacular finale in which the criminal is poisoned by a glass of liqueur which that person prepared for another suspect. <br /><br />A film starring Basil Rathbone was made of <em>The Bishop Murder Case</em> in 1930. The film was an early "talkie" and lacks a music soundtrack.<br /><br /><strong>Condition:</strong></p><p>Inscription to front end paper. heal points rubbed and beginning to show. 185711291857. Mixed method engraving. <p>A pair of mixed method engravings published by Gambart and Co. in 1857 in a declared edition of 225 pairs. The original paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1854. In the first picture the scene is the interior of a second class railway carriage with hard unpadded wooden benches. A young mother plainly dressed in a black coat bonnet and shawl clutches the hand of her young son who is evidently on his way to Portsmouth to join the service of the East India Company a recruiting poster is pasted to the wall above his head. His tearful sister sits on the bench opposite next to her brother's baggage a sailor is traveling with his wife in the background numerous posters advertising ship passages to Australia and India and other advertisements are stuck to the walls and ships in the harbour are visible through the carriage window. In the second picture the young man now considerably older has returned to England evidently having made his fortune. He sits in backview in a comfortably upholstered first class carriage wearing smart military uniform chatting to an elderly well dressed fellow passenger while exchanging glances with the old man's pretty fashionably dressed young daughter who sits demurely crocheting in a corner of the carriage. Abraham Solomon was a popular London artist and Simmons was a notable mezzotint engraver. The Departure has some faint spotting lower right corner in margin faint indentation in title area and repaired tear in margin outside the platemark on right hand side. The Return has a repaired tear on left hand side which enters the image about 4cm. It also has a repaired tear in top margin outside image area but within platemark. <br /> <br /> </p> <br /> <p></p> unknown

1976ABE-1952151681TRITON PRESS U.S.A. 1976 The stunning Andrew Wyeth Metropolitan Exhibition in 1976 was one of the great successes in that gallery's history. After the close of the show it was agreed to issue a special Collotype of one painting the image that had been most requested; THE QUAKER. Andrew Wyeth considered this to be one of his best temperas and it certainly received the approval of critics and the public. Thomas Hoving the Director of the Met worked with Harry Lerner of Triton Press to bring about a faithful image of this never reproduced work and Wyeth agreed to approve every stage. 'The final result has my complete approval' declared the artist at the end of the long process and each print was then fitted into a scrupulously exact copy of the original frame. There is a discrete blind embossed Triton logo in the lower left corner of the print which guarantees the absolute authenticity of the print. This particular example has been carefully stored in a low light environment and it is magnificent. When a rare copy of this extraordinary issue comes to an auction house in its original frame it achieves a very high price indeed much more than is being asked here. 'The Quaker' is an exceptional work and a very exacting process has ensured all the subtlety of the original tempera is captured. THIS PRINT IN THE SPECIAL FRAME HAS ACHIEVED VERY LARGE SUMS AT AUCTION THE HIGHEST FOUR TIMES THE PRICE OF THIS ONE. On the back of the picture is the ORIGINAL PRINTED DESCRIPTION about how this beautiful subtle print was achieved. Please ask about the cost of carriage of this considerable package. Costs will depend on destination of course but for American or other overseas purchases the final shipping cost will have to be at the buyers expense. 1840180962Paihia: Church Missionary Society Press 1840. First Te Reo Maori edition of The Book of Daniel and The Book of Jonah the second expanded issue with the addition of the seventh book of Daniel published by William Colenso 1811-1899 on the Church Missionary Society Press. The press was the second to arrive in Aotearoa in December 1834 and printed many important documents including the Treaty of Waitangi also printed in 1840. This edition was printed by William Colenso 1811-1899 an Anglican missionary and publisher from Penzance Cornwall also notable for his contributions to botany in New Zealand. Colenso famously recorded the speeches performed at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and would criticize the new government for taking advantage of language barriers to progress colonial interests. Colenso had little interest in government printing jobs recording in his diary "In January '40 H.M.S. Herald arrived in the Bay of Islands bringing Capt. Hobson R.N. who was our first Governor. Immediately on his arrival my hands were full to overflowing with extra printing for the new Govt. and that too in the English language for which I had no type cases and was therefore obliged to have the additional "sorts" of letters in little piles on tables and boxes and even on the floor" Manuscript at The National Library Wellington. This book is also notable as an early example of Te Reo Maori in print which was an almost entirely oral language before the 19th century. As the bibliographer Herbert Williams writes "the books printed for Maori particularly those which appealed to Maori most strongly were used and perished in the using." While early Bible translations in Te Reo Maori are often credited to Colenso Herbert Williams says that W. G. Puckey 1805-1878 made these translations stating that the original manuscript for this pamphlet was "dated 1836 at which date Colenso would hardly have been competent for the task" and that after inspecting the manuscript Puckey's son was confident it was in his father's handwriting. As well as being a skilled linguist Puckey was also an accomplished boatbuilder and carpenter who oversaw the construction of many early buildings in the Northland region. Provenance: Stephen C. "Lawrence had taken part in the preliminary planning of the Arab uprising and in October 1916 was ordered to Jiddah to assess the military situation. What followed is recorded in Seven Pillars of Wisdom a personal emotional narrative of the Arab revolt in which Lawrence reveals how by sheer willpower he made history. It was a testimony to his vision and persistence and a fulfilment of his desire to write an epic which might stand comparison in scale and linguistic elegance with his beloved Morte d'Arthur and C. M. Doughty's Arabia deserta. Subtitled 'A triumph' its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus a victory which successfully concludes a gruelling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs. In a way Seven Pillars is a sort of Pilgrim's Progress with Lawrence as Christian a figure sustained by his faith in the Arabs successively overcoming physical and moral obstacles" ODNB. No copies are for sale""; and finally after Lawrence's death in May 1935 the text was published in a trade edition by Jonathan Cape in July 1935.
