008638LONDON AND NEW YORK: CASSELL PETTER AND GALPIN. 1st Edition . Full Morocco. Fine/No Jacket. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. GUSTAVE DORE. This magnificent 2 volume set of the Gustave Dore-illustrated Holy Bible is copiously illustrated with 238 original illustrations as called for. The edition corresponds to Dan Malan's catalogue "Adrift On Dreams of Splendor" as the 1867 first book form edition using the same sheets as the magazine edition with all engravings in the right order. The book is bound in contemporary full morocco heavily embellished with blind and gilt motifs to front and rear boards and with Dore's name in gilt at the base of each spine. Burnished marbled endpapers all edges in lustrous gilt. The condition of the binding is very good with only a few marks and a some small scuffs to the top edge of the boards slight bumping to top corners and some slight wear to the front joint on Vol 1 as well as three cup rings in the central panel of the front board but not too bad. The condition of the pages is equally very good. Generally bright and clean though with foxing to the prelims of Vol 1 Genesis to Lamentations and with some foxing to the margins of some engravings - a small minority. Vol 2 Ezekiel to Revelation has a closed tear to the bottom of approx 2.5 cm / 1 inch with a neat archival tape repair. This book includes The Apocrypha. The Gustave Dore Bible is a highly collectable work and they are unusual to find in this very good condition. The register of Marriages Births and Deaths is empty which means it could be used as a family bible. This one of the better condition Dore Bibles I have seen in early edition in Very Good condition. Later editions had a reduced number of engravings since some were considered too lurid for polite Victorian tastes. A lovely piece of history. 39cm tall 33cm wide across the boards Vol 1 9cm thick Vol 2 7.5cm thick. These books weigh around 25 kilos when packed. 2009ABE-1675274264536OUP Oxford 2009 NEW & UNREAD. 45 YEARS IN THE MAKING. This is now VERY RARE INDEED. The Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary HTOED is a unique new resource charting the semantic development of the huge and varied vocabulary of English. It is the first comprehensive historical thesaurus ever produced for any language containing almost every word in English from Old English to the present day and is a magnificent resource for the historical study of the language. It is based on a detailed analysis of English as found in the second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary OED and also draws on A Thesaurus of Old English. Conceived and compiled by the English Language Department of the University of Glasgow over a period of some 45 years the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary is a groundbreaking analysis of meaning in the history of English. Content and Structure The thesaurus organization follows a unique thematic system of classification with entries arranged in a comprehensive semantic hierarchy according to their meanings. Each individual synonym is presented in chronological order according to the first recorded date of the word's use in English as listed in the Oxford English Dictionary with earliest synonyms given first. There are three major sections in the HTOED reflecting the main activities and preoccupations of users of the language: I The external world II The mental world III The social world These in turn are divided into 354 major categories such as Food and drink Thought or War. Further categories and subcategories follow moving from the most general ideas to the most specific. Overall the HTOED contains around 800000 meanings organized into more than 236000 categories and subcategories. The semantic categories and subcategories are headed by phrases which define them and link to preceding sections. In the abridged example given here the headings and numbering show that Terms of endearment at the fourth level of the semantic hierarchy are part of Love which is classified within the higher category of Emotion which in turn comes under The mind. 02 The mind . 02.02 Emotion . 02.02.22 Love . 02.02.22.04 Terms of endearment . The HTOED contains obsolete historical and archaic vocabulary as well as the vocabulary of current English; it covers scientific technical and specialist terminology as well as slang dialect and informal language and regional varieties of English from all parts of the world. Each term is precisely entered into its place in this comprehensive hierarchy of meaning according to its meaning and date and is accessible either by browsing at any level of the hierarchy or by looking up a particular word in its alphabetical place via the Index. The Index itself lists nearly one million references and ensures a comprehensive lookup and accessibility of the full text. The final printed work is presented in two volumes: Volume 1 is the Thesaurus while Volume 2 is the alphabetical Index listing the synonyms in Volume 1. Readers may thus approach the content of the Thesaurus in different ways: either by looking up a single lexical item in the Index and being directed to the appropriate section in the main Thesaurus or by browsing by semantic category directly and seeing words in their context of both historical development and the overall organization of meaning. There is an Introductory essay by the Editors and a Foreword written by Lord Randolph Quirk together with a specially commissioned fold-out chart showing the principal levels of the semantic classification. Readership The HTOED is a unique resource for scholars of all types - linguists and language specialists historians literary commentators etc. - as well as being a fascinating resource for everyone with an interest in the English language and its historical development. It is the ideal complement to the OED itself allowing the OED to be accessed and its contents viewed in wholly new way. 1st Edition. Hardcover. As New. OUP Oxford hardcover

His first book "Analyse des infiniment petits pour l’intelligence des lignes courbes" 1696 was the first textbook of the differential calculus and his name lives on in the name of the rule for finding the limiting value of a fraction whose numerator and denominator tend to zero. His mathyematical teacher was Jean Bernoulli. The year in which Newton published the anti-Cartesian "Arithmeticus" there appeared in France a conspicuously successfull textbook on Cartesian geometry along the lines of that of Guisnée. This was the "Traité Analytique des Sections Coniques". a book which contains less original material than that of Guisnée but which is more extensive and closer to the modern manner of treatment. The work had been intended for publication at the time the authors famous calculus textbook appeared in 1696 but l'Hospital's illness apparently led to delay and it appeared posthumously in 1707. It is Cartesian in emphasis and although it consists of but one volume follows generally the tripartite plan of Lahire and Ozanam: first an algebraic quasi-analytic treatment of the Conic Sections along the lines of Apollonian theory; then an analytic study of the loci and finally a long section on the customary construction by conics of the roots of cubic and quartic polynominal equations. LHospital sometimes used two axes and seems to have recognized the interchangeability of these but he betrays some hesitation. In general L'Hospital like Descartes was more interested in analytic geometry as a measure of ecpressing loci algebraivcally than as a method of deriving the properties of a curve from its equation." Leverrier. simultaneously and independently determined the location of a possible new planet. In 1845 he wrote of his findings of the mathematical location of a new planet to Sir George Bidell Airy Because Adams was unknown his letter was put aside. Meanwhile the same perturbations of Uranus had become of interest to Leverrier. On July 1should be June ! 1846 he presented a paper "Recherches sur les mouvements d'Uranus" to the Academie des Sciences inParis. When Airy realized that Leverrier and Adams had reached the same conclusions he hastened to suggest that a search be made for the newplanert. Shortly hereafter it was seen bur not recognized. About a week before it was found in England it was discovered by Galle in Berlin on information supplied by Leverrier. Thus the honour of the discovery or even co-discovery of the new planet Neptune was lost to Adams and credited to Leverrier. Rutherford's paper: pp. 537-587.

First appearance of this seminal paper which contains Rutherford's discovery of artificial transmutation. He here discovered that the atomic nucleus discovered by him in 1911 itself had a structure when by bombarding nitrogen with alpha particles he produced THE FIRST ARTIFICIAL TRANSFORMATION OF AN ELEMENT INTO ANOTHER and what was left after the bombardment had to be those of oxygen atoms. - Thus thus began the age of nuclear physics."Rutherford was . the first man ever to change one element into another as a result of the manipulations of his own hands. He had achieved the dream of the alchemists. He had also demonstrated the first man-made "nuclear reaction". By 1924 Rutherford had managed to knock protons out of the nuclei of most of the lighter elements." Asimov."A few years before Marsden had noticed scintillations on a screen placed far beyond the range of alpha particles when these particles were allowed to bombard hydrogen. Rutherford repeated the experiment and showed that the scintillations were caused by hydrogen nuclei or protons. This was easily understood but when he substituted nitrogen for the hydrogen he saw the same proton flashes. The explanation he gave in 1919 stands beside the transformation theory of radioactivity and the nuclear atom as one of Rutherford’s most important discoveries. This he said was a case of artificial disintegration of an element. Unstable or radioactive atoms disintegrated spontaneously; but here a stable nucleus was disrupted by the alpha particle and a proton was one of the pieces broken off." DSB.PMM: 411. hardcover
