1570801Basel: Eusebius Episcopius 1570. Hardcover. Poor. Heinrich Vogtherr the Elder. Rich provenance adorns this wonderful renaissance work capturing the myths geometry and observational data of the ancient world's heavens adorned with 48 beautiful illustrations of the constellations. Although the illustrator wasn't named scholars generally attribute the 48 woodcuts of constellations to Heinrich Vogtherr the Elder who was active in Basel at the time and shared a similar style. These blocks reflect a more modern 16th century approach to the constellations in comparison the 15th century Ratdolt illustrations of the same work. Provenance - A Latin scholar likely circa 16-17th century wrote witty Latin phrases at the front and rear. The title page has an inscription warning that roughly translated ""a fat belly does not produce subtle thoughts"". At the colophon is a lengthy indictment of the Roman Church drawing from phrases found in Graecimus by Eberhard of Bethune 13th century and Albertus de Rosate 14th century. Adding more context this book was printed in Basel at the height of the reformation. The large front ex libris plate is of Sir William Stirling-Maxwell. The book is listed in his 1860 library catalogue and he wrote page 197 "".useful collection of ancient mythologists. Included here for the curious fragments of ancient lore and table-talk ana preserved in the Fabulae and the astrological traditions."" At the rear pastedown is a ticket from Stirling-Maxwell's library assigning it to the ""Ana"" section. The ex libris on the FEP is that of the noted Harvard astronomer historian bibliophile and author Owen Gingerich. 1950NL-01679
This comprehensive state government report assesses the technical viability of an elaborate water management system to transport potable water from the Sierras and other inland sources through the depression of Central Valley and to the large population centers along the coast. The current means by which the inhabitants of the Bay Area are supplied with water was only envisioned in the 1930s and 40s and only fully constructed during the 1950s. The water management system of Northern California is an elaborate configuration of dams pipes and pumps and this government report addresses all of the challenges and technical aspects that such complicated hydrological infrastructure entails.

As reflected in the report's contents the idea was to supply the coastal hubs with drinking water and transform Central Valley into a high-yield agricultural zone through intensive irrigation and cultivation. Anyone familiar with Central Valley today will know that most of these initiatives have been a tremendous success from an economic and production perspective. On the other hand ecological diversity and sustainability have suffered from Central Valley's development into the current agricultural zone. The report is comprehensive and comprises no less than 154 pages including several color-coded maps showing the planned water management systems and covering aspects such as soil quality and regional catchment. In addition to the maps the report contains many photographs of the sections under implementation or construction at the time.

In sum this is an exciting and highly technical document from the Post-WWII era during which San Francisco and northern California once again boomed both financially and demographically. The report reflects not only the times in which it was created but an example of how America we know today builds on a combination of grit and ingenuity.

16810001028EDINBURGH SCOTLAND. Very Good. 1681. Unbound. On offer is an excellent skin charter being a land grant from Charles II to well-noted jurist James Dalrymple 1st Viscount of Stair Scotland with mentions the Dukes of Rothes and Lauderdale who were also prominent Scotsmen. Dalrymple was famed not only for his legal judgments but also he was a prominent character in Scotland's history having been involved in the negotiations between Charles and the Scottish Parliament. This grant was given at Edinburgh on the 10th of December 1680 absent of seals. There is another note on the back of the parchment to say that the charter was written at Edinburgh on the second of March 1681 suggesting the deal was struck in December but that the charter was not actually drawn up until the next March. Historically the Charters falls squarely between the Restoration period and when he was prominent until his sympathy with the Covenanters at the time of the Scottish Test Act caused him to lose 1681 his appointment as judge. The note giving March as the date for the writing of the charter appears to be in the same hand as the charter itself. Dalyrymple was a fascinating Scotsman who found himself on one side or the other of the Scottish-English political scene but was well considered. Sir Walter Scott observe that the Viscount of Stair was fortunate in his descendants. "The family of Dalrymple produced within two centuries as many men of talent civil and military of literary political and professional eminence as any house in Scotland." Folded to a small 12mo. The parallax observed corresponded to ab. 600.000 times that of the earth from the sun. On these grounds Bessel calculated the distance to about 11 light years and this was confirmed by fresh investigations by Bessel in 1839-40 the second paper offered. In 1842-43 it was also confirmed by C.A.F. Peters at Pulkowa. It is the first published instance of the fathom-line thrown into celestial space.Bessel communicated his observations in Comptes Rendus in a letter to Humboldt the offered paper dated Nov. 5 1838 in "Monthly Notices" in letter to J. Herschel and in "Astronomische Nachrichten" Vol. 16 No 365-66 pp. 65-96 1838 where a more detail account was published.Ther paper "Bestimmung der Entfernung des 61sten Stern des Schwans" in "Astronomische Nachrichten" is dated at the end: Altona 1838 Dec. 13.Bessel's investigation was hailed by John Herschel when Bessel was awarded the R.A.S. gold medal "The greatest and most glorious triumph which practical astronomy has ever witnessed". "For determining the parallax of 61 Cygni Bessel selected two comparison stars of magnitude 9-10 at distances of roughly eight and twelve minutes of arc. 61 Cygni is a physical double star whose components differ in brightness by less than one magnitude. The distance of sixteen seconds of arc between the components favored the accuracy of the determination of the parallax because pointing could be carried out with two star images. After observing for eighteen months by the fall of 1838 Bessel had enough measurements for the determination of a reliable parallax. He found that p = 0.314 with a mean error of ±:0.020. This work was published in the Astronomische Nachrichten 1838 the first time the distance of a star became known. Bessel’s value for the parallax shows excellent agreement with the results obtained by extensive modern photographical parallax determinations." This principle paints a dramatic picture of the end of the world the so-called "heath-death of the universe"."Entropy on the other hand of the complementary experience of water seeking its own level of hot bodies cooling of springs untensing of magnetism wearing off and electrical charges leaking away of a destiny suchThat no life lives forever; - That dead men rise up never; that even the weariest river Winds somewhere safe to sea: a world getting old and running down."Gillespie in "The edge of Objectivity" p. 400-01."Clausius discovered that if he took the ratio of the heat content of a system and its absolute temperature this ration would always increase in any process taken place in a closed system. A closed system is one that loses no energy to the outside world and gains no energy from it.
