Contemporary blind-decorated brown calf contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Lightly rubbed a little marked. Several eighteenth-century ink inscriptions of John Todd one of which partially erased without loss of text. The second edition of an uncommon treatise on tithes by gentleman barrister and antiquary Timothy Cunningham who is perhaps better known for The Law of Bills of Exchange London 1760. This second edition is greatly expanded from the first London 1765 which consisted of only 173pp. ESTC locates copies at only six libraries in the British Isles Birmingham Dublin King's Inn Middle Temple NLW Oxford Senate House and just three elsewhere Columbia Harvard and Rutgers. 1783140<p>Hardbound in full calf with gilt embossed spines. Expanded English edition printed in 8 volumes octavo 399 432 426 523 499 520 564 374 pp with 83 page index at the end of vol. 8 frontispiece portrait of Raynal in vol. 1 and 7 folding maps by Thomas Kitchin of the world Europe Africa East Indies South America Mexico and West Indies and the newly-formed United States. Especially notable for any edition is the first appearance of the "Map of the United States in North America: with the British French and Spanish Dominions Adjoining According to the Treaty of 1783" which ranks as one of the earliest published maps of the new nation.</p><p>Condition: Complete with all volumes and maps. The bindings are fair to very good. Volume 1-4 and 6 have new leather spines headbands and endpapers with much of the original spine strips laid down except volume 1 which is bare. Volumes 5 7 and 8 are original with some cracking and heavy wear to spines. The front board of volume 7 and rear board of volume 8 have separated. Spine gilt decoration and numbering mostly worn away. Text is very good with light toning and an occasional spot of foxing. Frontispiece is pristine. The folding maps are generally good with moderate offsetting except of the World and Europe maps which are very good with only light offsetting. The map of New Spain also has a 3" binding tear. Overall a fair to good complete reference set that is unsuitable for the shelf but containing the first printing of the important US map by Kitchin.</p> Printed for W. Strahan and T. Cadell hardcover

1796B402London: G. C. and J. Robinson 1796. First. Hardcover. Near Fine. This pamphlet was part of a public debate on some proposed laws to strengthen government security measures to protect King George III. including expansion of the definition and penalties for sedition. The discussion was in the context at the time that the king of France had been recently guillotined during the French Revolution. Another consideration though not directly mentioned was that King George was exhibiting signs of mental instability. An ink annotation on the title page attributes the Reply to Sir Edward Harington but this was incorrect. Harington was the author of the Remarks being replied to.<br /> <br /> This copy is near fine in a modern binding with a white cloth spine on brown paper-covered boards with original title labels on the spine and front cover. Some scattered soiling to the text but overall it is quite clean for its age.<br /> <br /> The work appears to be quite rare with only a single copy listed in ETSC that being in the British Library.<br /> <br /> . A scarce collection of legal works comprising of two separate works on two famous trials and several accounts of the inventory of many landowners in the eighteenth century. Being eight works bound as one but being three separate works bound as one. The first part to this volume is 'A Report from the Committee.'. To this part we are lacking the report and only have the appendices present. The second part forms of six separately published tracts in the same vein and from the same series regarding the inventories of six noted individuals of the early eighteenth century. The third part is an excerpt from a wider work tracking the proceedings of Warren Hastings' impeachment trial. The first work is from the first edition the first two 'Inventory' tracts are first editions with the final four being second editions and the excerpt from the minutes of Warren Hasting's trial is a first edition. 'Part printed by William Bowyer; his records show an initial printing of 3000 ordinary and 1500 fine-paper copies followed by three printings of 1000 copies each and a final printing of 500 copies' - ESTC. Cyphers The second work to this volume as stated above forms of six separately published tracts in the same vein regarding the inventories of six noted individuals of the early eighteenth century. The full title of the first work is 'The particular and inventory of all and singular the lands tenements and hereditaments goods chattels debts and personal estate whatsoever of the Right Honourable Sir Robert Sutton. Which he was Seized or Possessed of or Intituled unto in his own Right and which any other Person or Persons was or were Seized or Possessed of or Intituled unto in Trust for him or to or for his Use or Benefit upon the First Day of January One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty or any Time after &c.' This is ESTC No T43694. In this edition sig F. on p.17 is under 'p' in 'paid' and the 8th line of the title page reads 'estate whatsoever'. To the next five of these tracts there is a preliminary leaf explaining that 'We do appoint Samuel Buckley to print the several inventories deliver's to us by the persons following viz. Sir Robert Sutton Knight of the Bath Sir Archibald Grant Bart Denis Bond Esq William Burroughs Esq Thomas Warren and Richard Woolley'. This work was commissioned by J Comyns and W Thomson. The second of these tracts regards the inventory of Sir Archibald Grant. The ESTC no of this is T51806 with the press figure '1' to page 22. The third of these tracts regards the inventory of Denis Bond with the ESTC no. T51800. This is the second edition with the press figure '3' on page 6. The ornament to the title page has two birds. The fourth of these tracts regards the inventory of William Burroughs with the ESTC no. T51804. This work is the second edition with the press figure '3' on page 8 and page 73 correctly numbered. This was printed by William Bowyer not Buckley and has the records showing this work had 850 copies and was entered 10 Feb 1733. The fifth of these tracts regards the inventory of Thomas Warren and has the ESTC reference no. T51798. This tract is also the second edition printed by Buckley and has the press figure '2' to page 6. The sixth and final of these inventory tracts regards Richard Woolley. This tract is ESTC reference no. T51871 and has the signature 'F' on page 17 beneath the 'G' in Grocer. The third part of this volume is an excerpt from the trial of Warren Hastings. It is pages 321-358 of 'Minutes of the Evidence Taken at the Trial of Warren Hastings Esquire Late Governor General of Bengal' which was published from 1788-94. The impeachment of Warren Hastings was a failed attempt to impeach the first Governor - General of Bengal in the Parliament of Great Britain. He was accused of misconduct during his time in Calcutta. These pages appear to be of a deposition of one John Benn. These pages regard the 10th April 1788 and the 11th April 1788. In a quarter calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Crest to the front board is rubbed. Joints are cracked with the hinges strained but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedown Longton Public Library. Stamp for 'Public Library Longton' to the occasional page at the margin not affecting the text. Internally firmly bound. Quackery: Early American Law and Medicine; Defamation Slander Rare publication of the infamous libel trial of William Cobbett by Dr. Benjamin Rush. Cobbett had printed strident criticism of Rush's advocacy of bloodletting in his Porcupine's Gazette in 1797. "The times are ominous indeed When quack to quack cries purge and bleed." Under the pen-name Peter Porcupine Cobbett had referred "to Rush as a bleeder the Samson of medicine who had actually slaughtered thousands of citizens and as a poisonous trans-Atlantic quack." During the calamitous Yellow Fever outbreak of 1797 Rush's advocacy of bleeding may have resulted in the death of numerous patients. Rush was a prominent founding father and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Cobbett lost this libel trial and was ordered to pay Rush $5000. To avoid the hefty judgement Cobbett left Philadelphia for New York set up his "Rush Light" and fled ultimately to Britain. An interesting proceeding where the question of what is a "quack" is explored and the patriotism and republicanism of Rush is oratorically chest thumped. Includes the long list of subscribers but not the rare ad leaf. Bound with half-title. This has the variant reading "vous" p. 150. The printed date "MDCCLXVIII" appears at the foot of the title page. However even though there is no certain internal evidence this is probably a 19th century facsimile reprint. In his book THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LAURENCE STERNE p. 604 Wilbur Cross identifies a De Vinne Press facsimile reprint limited to 100 copies that was published in 1885. On the front free endpaper of this copy is the signature "D. L. De Vinne 1885" probably of the De Vinne Press. Hardcover. 4.25" wide by 7" tall. Bound in the original pale yellow cloth.
