An apparently unrecorded edition in original state of a liturgy to be used on the day of national thanksgiving ordered in celebration of the British victory over the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile. Owing to Nelson’s first dispatches being intercepted confirmation of the British victory in the first days of August 1798 - which represented one of the most significant reversals of fortune in the naval Age of Sail securing supremacy of the Mediterranean for the Royal Navy - did not reach England until 2nd October. Jubilant celebrations erupted around the country. The usual databases record numerous variants of the edition published by George Eyre and Andrew Strahan printers to the King. The present edition without any information in the imprint besides the date is seemingly unaccounted for. Intriguingly those editions that are recorded run to only 11pp.; the present issue however contains a 3pp 'Communion Service' evidently not included in other states - perhaps suggesting an edition printed for the use of a specific unidentified parish Not in ESTC. . From a strategic naval base during the Anglo-Dutch Wars in the 17th century by the 18th the order of business at Chatham on the Medway was largely repairs which are depicted in the vignettes surrounding the map. However that being so four years after the date of this map the renowned HMS Victory a 104-gun first rate ship of the line was laid down in 1759 at Chatham and now the world's oldest naval vessel still in commission. unknown

17701845<p><strong>A rare example of Russian text of the Enlightenment --- "The best and most luxurious edition" of Catherine's famous 'Great Instructions' </strong>such described by Count M.A. Korf then director of the Imperial Library. First published and "signé de la propre main de Sa Majesté Impériale" in 1768; this edition however is the only in several languages and illustrated.</p><p>These instructions were "largely compiled and adapted by Catherine personally from the texts of Montesquieu and Beccaria. Although the project was never brought to fruition the impulse behind it stands as one of the nobler concepts of Catherine's reign" Fekula 2013 for a later edition.</p><p>A major document of the Enlightenment it condemned torture and capital punishment and endorsed such principles as the equality of all before the law.</p><p>The illustration consists of two detailed symbolic engravings each repeated once by Roth d. 1798 an engraver from Nuremberg who mostly worked in Russia.</p><p><strong>"The most magnificent and desirable of the more than 40 editions of the Nakaz"</strong> Widener <strong>"one of the most remarkable political treatises ever compiled and published by a reigning sovereign in modern times"</strong> I. de Madariaga Russia in the Age of Catherine the Great 1981 p. 151. First edition of this work commemorating the 1688 Revolution accompanied by an engraving of the house near Chesterfield Derbyshire by Hayman Rooke. The whole including the text derived from a letter from Pegge was prepared by Rooke for presentation to friends and his prefatory note to that end has a small textual revision in ink. Both Rooke and Pegge made considerable contributions to the antiquarian and topographical studies of the area.
