Printed for R.I Chilwell at the Rose and Crown in St. Paul's Churchyard 1706. First edition. Leather binding. It appears that this has been rebound at some point. The spine is in beautiful condition- with five raised bands. The boards maybe original as they are a slightly different colour and have more signs of wear and scuffing. The end papers seem to be newer paper than the book contents. Rest of the book is original. Some chipping to page edges and some marks including what look like finger prints to page edges. A contemporary owner has annotated and underlined several sections in the Tea Act. 92 pp. 8vo. These acts passed that years were seen by the author as being the most pertinent and so included in this work the rest of the acts of Parliament were to be released shortly thereafter in a second part.<br /> <br /> The acts abstracted were the 1 Tea and Window repealing the several Duties and for granting other duties in lieu and duties on coffee and cocoa nuts Act 2 The Game Act hunting license 3 The Horse Act granting duties on riding and carriage horses 4 The Postage Act increasing postage rates 5 The Pawn Broker's Act trying to reduce the handling of stolen goods 6 The Soap and Starch Act requiring the licensing of makers of starch and instilling new laws on soapmakers 7 The Cotton and Linen Act placing duties 8 The Hatter's Act requiring licenses laying additional duties on imported hats 9 The Excise Goods Act laying duties upon licences to be taken out by the makers and delers in exciseable commodities 10 The Candle Act cancelling the duty on wax candles made in Britain 11 The Distillery Act trying to discourage home distillation by discontinuing the duties uon low wines and spirits for home consumption. 12 The Hackney Coach Act increasing the charge for Hackey license 13 The Smuggling Act trying to prevent 14 Brick and Tile Act placing duties on brick and tile made in Great Britain and additional duties on those imported 15 Wax Candle Act placing additional duties on all candles except wax and spermaceti candles. Gower fl. 1767-1833 a sea captain and naval architect "had been shocked by the low standard of navigation which he found in the convoy which took him to the East Indies.He devised a patent log part of the workmanship being entrusted to Alexander Grant and the sole rights of sale vested in Messrs Gilbert & Wright of 148 Leadenhall Street. He refers to "the indefatigable Mr. Stancliff' as cutting the scale on his optical instrument with his dividing machine. He then tried the instrument out with John Adams a mathematical teacher of Edmonton who has been identified as a reviser of textbooks for Mount and Page the chart-sellers."-Taylor <em>The Mathematical Practitioners of Hanoverian </em><em>England</em><em> 1714-1840 </em>#840. "In 1787 he devised an instrument which measured a vessel's way through the water with greater accuracy than had previously been possible."-<strong>O</strong><strong>DNB</strong><strong>.</strong> The followng year he wrote <em>A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Seamanship </em>which long remained a standard work. Image with text measures 18.5" x 11.75".<br/> <br/> From the "English Pilot" a composite sea-chart atlas published in several editions from 1671 to 1803. This map of St. Peters in Newfoundland was part of the fourth book "The West-India Navigation" published by W. & J. Mount & T. Page in 1751. The Mount family was active in publishing in various manifestations for many generations from the 1650s to 1800. On the back of the page is a beautiful print of two Auks along with a description of the birds and their abundance in this area. These birds were eventually hunted into extinction.<br/> <br/> W. & J. Contemporary panelled calf spine with four raised bands second compartment with red morocco label lettered in gilt. In excellent condition. Internally very good with some browning and foxing slightly heavier to title page. Attractively decorated with a variety of head and tailpieces and wood engraved initials. Front pastedown has ownership inscription: "E.Kynaston. 1743". A very nice copy of "the principal English work of early date on fish culture". Roger North was a politician and lawyer "one of only two honest lawyers I ever knew" according to the Earl of Clarendon. On his retirement from public affairs in 1688 North retired to Norfolk where he devoted his time to music he wrote extensively on music theory architecture and the organisation of his estate at Rougham. This small book on Fish and Fish-ponds was intended as a guide for other landowners who "have a Mind to divert themselves with the most reasonable employment of beautifying and improving their own estates".
