John Moore FRSE 1729 1802 was a Scottish physician and travel author. He also edited the works of Tobias Smollett. He was born on 10 October 1729 in Stirling the son of Rev Charles Moore of Rowallan d1735 and his wife Marion Anderson. The family moved to Glasgow in his youth and he was educated at Glasgow Grammar School. He was then apprenticed to Dr. John Gordon in Glasgow 1745 to 1747. After taking a medical degree at Glasgow he served as a Surgeon's Mate with the army in Flanders during the Seven Years' War then proceeded to London to continue his studies and eventually to Paris where became surgeon to the household of the British ambassador there. In 1751 he returned to Glasgow to rejoin Dr. John Gordon also then practising with Dr. Thomas Hamilton. From 1769 to 1778 he accompanied the Duke of Hamilton who was linked to Thomas on a Grand Tour of Europe. On his return he took up residence in London. In 1792 he accompanied Lord Lauderdale to Paris and witnessed some of the principal scenes of the Revolution. His Journal during a Residence in France 1793 is the careful record of an eye-witness and is frequently referred to by Thomas Carlyle. In 1784 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were Andrew Dalzell James Gregory and John Robison. He died in Richmond in Surrey now part of London on 21 February 1802. He is buried in Stirling. His novel Zeluco 1789 a close analysis of the motives of a selfish profligate produced a great impression at the time and indirectly through the poetry of Byron has left an abiding mark on literature. Byron said that he intended Childe Harold to be a poetical Zeluco and the most striking features of the portrait were undoubtedly taken from that character. Moore's other works have a less marked individuality but his sketches of society and manners in France Germany Switzerland Italy and England A View of Society and Manners in France Switzerland and Germany London W. Strahan & T. Cadell in the Strand 1779 2 vol.; A View of Society and Manners in Italy with anecdotes related to some eminent characters London W. Strahan & T. Cadell 1781 2 vol. were also very popular during his lifetime and furnish valuable materials for the social historian. "Mordaunt. Character Sketches of Life Characters and Manners in Various Countries; including the Memoirs of A French Lady of Quality" was a powerfully written anti-French Revolution novel in three volumes in the form of 34 character sketches of famous politicians royalty generals the wealthy and the celebrity of the day. It also offers detailed eyewitness accounts of John Moore's observations as he travelled throughout Europe in the last years of the 18th century. There are gripping accounts of the heroic feats of a dashing British Officer included which were actually accounts of John Moore's son General Moore. Wikipedia hardcover
1796ABC_49403Various places including Saudi Arabia and Yemen 1796. Contemporary or slightly later half black morocco marbled boards. Small folio ca. 19 x 30.5 cm. English manuscript on watermarked paper. With a loosely inserted manuscript map titled A Chart shewing the Track of HMS Ship Myrtle of the Bay of Biscay and Portugal and a hand-coloured manuscript signal chart. A detailed description of the voyage of the East India company vessel the Swift from 1794-1795 featuring visits to both Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Twelve pages of observations are dedicated to Jeddah alone witnessed at the height of the influx of pilgrims during the Hajj followed by a description of Mocha also Mokha in Yemen. Other ports visited include those of Brazil South Africa India the Nicobar Islands Malaysia and Sri Lanka.Jeddah the author says "has a very pleasant appearance as you approach it from the sea . The houses are all of stone of the coral kind." However as the Swift had arrived in the midst of the Hajj and its crew found provisions difficult to acquire as thousands of pilgrims poured into Jeddah: "It is astonishing the number of Mahometans arriving from all parts of the world to attend the yearly ceremony at Mecca called Hadgi from thence to Medina." Several accounts are given of particular Muslim practices through occasionally somewhat confused British eyes: "When near Geddah all the Pilgrims going their first journey altered their dress assuming what is called the Ihhram a piece of linnen ! which is wrapped round the loins leaving the rest of the body naked in this state they proceed through the rest of the pilgrimage till they have visited the Kaaba at Mecca; the other garment they are then suffered to wear is a cloth of linen over their shoulders. . Some of them carry a trade of muslins and some other little articles which if they are not robbed by the Bedouins wild Arabs they make out tolerably well . The landing of the pilgrims with their wives and household utensils would have been an excellent view for the inimitable Hogarth."The Swift appears to be one of the ships which accompanied the Suffolk a 64-gun ship to escort a convoy to India under the command of Captain Peter Rainier 1741-1808 later Admiral of the Blue and namesake of Mount Rainier. This particular voyage was in itself notable as a trial for the implementation of a citrus diet for sailors to ward off scurvy which was ultimately successful and became Admiralty policy the following year. On the first page of the account we find the following: "The beer being expended ordered the Company to be served wine mixed with 1oz of sugar and oz of lemon juice to every pint it was very nice tipple."The boards show mild traces of use. With a few small smudges on some of the leaves. Otherwise in excellent condition. hardcover

Leavitt was a Tory a fact well known in town: people burned down his barn and surrounded his home at one point. The story goes that the pleasant elegantly dressed Mrs. Leavitt invited the mob in for cakes and wine which calmed everyone down. unknown books

The event marked his departure aboard the Henry Grace a Dieu one of the largest warships of its time as he sailed to Calais for his historic meeting with King Francis I of France at the Field of Cloth of Gold. The painting captures the grandeur of Henry's fleet with golden sails gun salutes and Dover Castle in the background. In this text Fournier sets out to prove that Gutenberg was not the inventor of the printing press by examining the history of printing. He believed that the technology Gutenberg made popular existed long before the German printer's work. Fournier also followed up this text with two additional works which are not present: De l'origine et des productions de l'imprimerie primitive en taille de bois 1759 and Observations sur un ouvrage intitulé Vindiciae Typographicae 1760. These two works provided further discussion of the origins of woodcut prints including a passage refuting popular belief about the origin wood engraving and some ideas for further study.

Fournier 1712--1768 was born in Paris and trained as a wood engraver and type founder being a member of the 18th century dynasty of the well-known Fournier family. He later turned to steel engraving. He published a table of the proportions of the different printing characters whose purpose was to propose for all typefaces a fixed measurement in "typographic points" and a systematic gradation. He worked closely with the collaborators of the Encyclopédie providing the printer Le Breton with all the documentation relating to the typographic foundry and plans for his own instruments as well as providing Diderot with his collection of ancient alphabets. Finally after multiple disputes with his Parisian colleagues he became infamous for the printing of his famous Manuel Typographique 1764 1766 just prior to his death. J. Barbou unknown
