In 1850 he was employed by John Reynella to work on the Reynella vineyards near Adelaide. By 1857 he had purchased his own vineyard and produced his first vintage. And by 1874 had purchased the famous Tintara vineyard in McLaren Vale from Alexander C Kelly. In 1883 he travelled to the United States visiting California Ohio and the East Coast. In California he visited San Francisco the Napa Valley Sonoma and many vineyards wineries and negociants down the coast to Los Angeles. He wrote about his experiences and published them as Notes on the Vineyards in America and Europe published by L Henn in Adelaide in 1885. He was also a founding lecturer on viticulture and wine-making at Roseworthy Agricultural College the leading Australian winemaking institute when it opened in 1885.<br /> <br /> The comprehensive and detailed essay on Californian wine in Notes on the Vineyards reproduced here is considered to be the first comprehensive text about early Californian winemaking. The original edition of Notes on the Vineyards is rare. This edition of the Californian part of the original text is also fully annotated by Dr Thomas Pinney a leading author on the history of wine in America.<br /> <br /> The Book Club of California was established in 1912. Some of the pages have light spotting with some soiling to the edges of the preliminary pages front and back but the book is solid with the cover edges worn in places. There is a small hole to page 133/ 34 affecting some lines of text. Given its age a Good only refurbished copy. 19.5 x 12 cm dark brown boards with blind embossed central motif 1-5 6-491pp 1 page of critical notices. According to Oxford this book first appeared in 1826. This the sixth edition which incorporates an appendix containing A Treatise on Domestic Brewing. Mistress Margaret Dods is the landlady in Scott's St. Ronan's Well; it is rumoured that Scott wrote the original preface. Christina Johnstone was a Scottish novelist; De Quincy cites her along with Joanna Baillie as an example of a woman "cultivating the profession of authorship with absolutely no sacrifice or loss of feminine dignity". This cookbook is a delight to read: after a page and a half of careful instruction on how to boil a turbot the author relates this story: " .a Bishop descending to his kitchen to superintend the dressing of a turbot and finding that his cook had stupidly cut away the fins set about sewing them on again with his own Episcopal fingers.
