Small octavo pp 299 the office copy from County of Santa Barbara Department of Agriculture with two neat stamps on the front endpapers and a stamp on top bottom and fore-edge but otherwise extremely clean internally. Brown cloth decorated in green very slightly frayed at the spine head but otherwise very good. Extremely scarce. A highly important work in viticulture. For some twenty years earlier the phylloxera insect had decimated American vineyards having created equal havoc earlier in Europe. Some American vines had natural resistance to the American phylloxera insect and the book promoted hybridisation and grafting using these at first less popular cultivars. First American Edition. 18845575Monroe Michigan: Monroe Democrat Print 1884. Octavo 23.75 x 15.25 cm. 35 i pages. Title from cover. Index. FIRST & ONLY EDITION. A community cookbook with one hundred eighty recipes the majority of them attributed. Arranged as a series of "bills of fare" for meals headed Breakfast Lunch Party Coffee High Tea Supper and one Hallow e'en Party. Some repetitions occur therefore both Fig Cake and Charlotte Russe for instance are deemed compatible with several menu lists. Examples of potential interest: Celery Salad with mustard dressing Potato Rolls Panned Oysters Fried Lobster Risoles Boiled Hominy French Oyster Pie Ice Cream Cocoanut Cake Pineapple Float Almond Ice Cream. Monroe is the seat of Monroe County on the shores of Lake Erie a stone's throw from Dearborn and Detroit to the north. How the young ladies knew one another is not revealed; what their introductory remarks do make clear is that the impetus for their gatherings was "the desire of having a good time together" and that for publishing a cookbook was to raise money for an excursion possibly "a trip to Europe". Categorically not a charitable cause then – at least not in the conventional sense. Several pages chipped dog-eared or stained. Stapled in rose paper wrappers with black titling; spine reinforced at an early date. Still not unnattractive. Good or better. Rare. OCLC locates four copies; in neither Cook Brown nor Cagle. 1969225261969. Women's History Cookbook Warren Mildred Evans. The Art of Southern Cooking: A Collection of New Traditional and Old Family Recipes. Garden City New York: Double Day and Company 1969. First edition. Illustrated with drawings by Rocco Negri. Bound in publisher's mustard-yellow cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial dust jacket. 274 pages. 8vo. Mildred Evans Warren a Mississippi-born and Georgia raised woman presents a carefully curated anthology of Southern cuisine through her American travels blending antebellum family recipes with modern mid-20th-century adaptations. Her work is notable for documenting culinary traditions rooted in the American South's agrarian heritage while also reflecting the postwar evolution of home cooking as processed goods refrigeration and changing lifestyles altered the way Southerners prepared their meals. Recipes are grouped by ingredient and course ranging from "Old Fashioned Plantation Dishes" and "Company Suppers" to seafood game and desserts including historical staples such as spoon bread Hoppin' John and pecan pie. Warren's prose is warm conversational and instructive often including anecdotal notes on the dishes' origins and family associations helping to preserve the cultural history embedded in Southern foodways. Light wear to jacket binding tight and pages clean. Overall very good condition. A desirable first edition of an important regional cookbook valuable both for its recipes and for its preservation of Southern culinary heritage during a period of significant cultural change. unknown
