It has two seperate narrative threads the first standard form fiction following a detective and the second a series of letters between "Mo Yan" and an aspiring author who is a fan of his work. Over the course of the book the narrative threads cross over and merge.<br /> <br /> Originally suppressed in China as subversive it was first printed in Taiwan in 1992 under the title "Jiu Guo". Mo Yan meaning "Don't speak" is a Chinese novelist and short story writer.
