Laurie Colwin a novelist and short stories writer was well known for her wit and especially for her food columns in Gourmet Magazine. Colwin died suddenly at the age of 48 in October 1992. Colwin was a part-time resident of West Cornwall CT where she struck up a friendship with Barbara Farnsworth. Margaret Mitchell pictured in pamphlet director of the test kitchen at Wear-Ever Cooking Utensil Company worked to develop utensils suitable for the electric range. Homemakers were troubled by their electric bills after installing their new electric ranges - Mitchell studied the sizes shapes and capacities of the utensils being used in households and deduced from her investigation that utensils for electric ranges should have straight sides and perfectly flat bottoms. L'art de Conserver: Appert's signature on verso of title page. One folding plate. Appert a confectioner chef and distiller developed the first method of preserving food by enclosing it in airtight sealed containers. Pasteur later admitted his pasteurization process was largely derived from Appert's earlier methods.
