In that first paper dealing with the role of atmospheric oxygen in vinification he sought to establish that the aging of wine resulted from the slow penetration of atmospheric oxygen through the porous wook casks into which new wine was decanted. By virtue of this slow oxidation he claimed new wine grows less harsh and acid to the taste as it becomes clearer and lighter from the to the taste as it becomes clearer and lighter from the precipation of dark coloring matters. In his second paper January 1864 Pasteur examined the "alterations" or "diseases of wine especially wine from the Jura his native department. Reviewing the familiar disease of "turned" "acid" "ropy" or "oily " wine he associated each with a microscopic organism. He summarized the results of his first two papers by nothing that "wine which is proudced by a cellular vegetation acting as a ferment namely yeast is altered only by the influence of other vegetations of the same order; and once removed from the effects of their parasitism it is made or matured principally by the action of atmospheric oxygen penetrating slowly through the staves of the casks."DSB. </em> unknown

1958203391958. Meaker Marijane writing as Vin Packer and Ann Aldrich; Torres Tereska; Marchal Lucie; Christian Paula. Lesbian pulp novels 1958-1961. These works document lesbian representation in midcentury pulp fiction through novels written by women a distinct subset of the genre that offered alternative portrayals of same-sex relationships during a period of widespread censorship and medicalization of homosexuality. Issued within commercial paperback publishing these texts present narratives centered on identity emotional experience and interpersonal relationships providing evidence of how women authors approached lesbian subject matter with greater emphasis on character interiority and in some cases less punitive narrative outcomes. The material supports research into LGBTQ literary history gender and authorship and the development of lesbian-focused narratives in mid-twentieth-century print culture.<br /> <br /> Five mass market paperback volumes published between 1958 and 1961 each approximately 200 pages and measuring about 4.75 x 7 inches. 1 Packer Vin Marijane Meaker. The Evil Friendship. Greenwich Conn: Fawcett Publications 1958. First printing. Follows two teenage girls exploring romantic attachment marketed as "Vin Packer's latest study of the tragedy of forbidden love." 2 Torres Tereska. The Dangerous Games. Greenwich Conn: Fawcett Publications 1961. Second printing. Centers on a married woman in Paris entering a polyamorous relationship and recognizing same-sex desire promoted as "The unorthodox love experiences of a young French woman." 3 Marchal Lucie. The Mesh. New York: Bantam Books 1959. New Bantam edition. Translation of a French novel depicting a relationship between two women with cover text describing "strange hidden passions. women living in a forbidden world." 4 Christian Paula. Another Kind of Love. Greenwich Conn: Fawcett Publications 1961. First Crest printing. Set in Hollywood following a writer and an actress in a same-sex relationship framed as "Women in Love with each other." 5 Aldrich Ann Marijane Meaker. We Too Must Love. Greenwich Conn: Fawcett Publications 1958. First printing. A nonfiction-inflected narrative drawing on lived experience introduced by the author as "the whys and wherefores of Lesbian life in New York City-as I have known it."<br /> <br /> These publications emerged within a pulp marketplace that relied on sensational marketing while operating under restrictions on explicit representation shaping how lesbian relationships could be depicted and circulated. Women authors such as Marijane Meaker writing under multiple names contributed to a shift toward more self-directed portrayals of lesbian identity while other writers expanded geographic and thematic scope across American and European settings. The presence of multiple works by women in a single grouping highlights a less dominant but significant strand of authorship within the genre. Together these texts provide primary evidence for the study of lesbian representation publishing practices and readership in the decades preceding broader public visibility of LGBTQ communities including developments associated with the Stonewall Riots. Light wear to covers with minor rubbing; textblocks tight and interiors clean. Overall very good condition. unknown

1874124156Melbourne: E. & D. Syme 'The Leader' Office and Adelaide Frearson & Bro 1874. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Melbourne E. & D. Syme 'The Leader' Office and Adelaide Frearson & Bro. 1874. Octavo iv second and last blank 59 pages. Original flush-cut printed stiffened wrappers with slight loss to silverfish; light tidemark to the top margin of the front cover and the top inside corner tip of the first ten leaves; front joint split a little top and bottom with minor loss to the ends of the spine; minimal signs of use and age; a very good copy internally excellent. 'The following Papers are reprinted from "The Farm" section of the Melbourne "Leader". The writer left Melbourne on 1st September 1874 and returned on the 30th November. The early Papers were written during September in which month the country round Adelaide is seen at its very best. The areas of Gawler Kapunda Kooringa Hill River Estate Clare and surroundings were visited during October and the return journey between Adelaide and Mount Gambier including Strathalbyn Willunga Goolwa Hindmarsh Island Narracoorte and the Drainage Country took place during November' preface. The critical comments on contemporary vine cultivation and wine production make interesting reading. Visits were made to properties and individuals well-known to this day: Davenport Boothby Crompton Auld Mrs Penfold Thomas Elder and Birksgate Thomas Hardie sic and Bankside and 'Clare - Seven Hills and St. Aloysius' College' with numerous 'Notable Wine Growers' in the region mentioned. Many areas significant in the modern vine and wine industry are conspicuously absent in this survey at least in this regard. This item is rare in our experience. Ferguson 9210. E. & D. 198912906Santa Rosa CA: Graphic Concepts 1989. Broadsheet cartoon map 22.25 x 16.75 inches with printed information on verso intended as a brochure but in this case unfolded. Some dampstaining along bottom portion mostly visible on verso with old tape at each corner of verso from previous mounting likely removed from a wall or bulletin board long ago. Otherwise minor wear. Good plus. Rolled. A lovely illustrated map of Napa Valley highlighting one of the region's most distinctive and iconic characteristics -- its robust viticulture industry. Numerous vineyards and wineries dot the fertile valley epitomized by an idyllic scene in the upper right corner. Notable names include Robert Mondavi Charles Krug Beringer Stag's Leap Sutter Home and Charles Shaw the source of Trader Joe's "Two Buck Chuck". The design and layout were executed by Ron Morales with artwork by Susan Clifford. This is one of several similar wine maps created by Morales though the emphasis on Napa Valley is an uncommon characteristic. The notice in the bottom margin reads "Copyright 1989 by Graphic Concepts" of Santa Rosa California. Charts on the verso lists the wineries by county and their various amenities and operating hours as well as local accommodations entertainment restaurants and so forth. This work was intended to be folded as a brochure for easy transport but the current example was never folded; it was likely posted at a winery or local business in Napa Valley and taken off the wall at some point. OCLC records just two copies of this delightful map fit for the wall of any wine enthusiast at the Library of Congress and the University of Utah though it is difficult to believe copies don't reside at various California especially northern California institutions.
