Lawrence informs Allnutt that he has been to the British Institution 'yet tho' at an early undisturb'd hour' he was 'unable to fix on any one Picture amongst many of nearly the same merit'. His advice is: 'You must yourself choose.' He finds 'some small Works by Mr. Childe' good but 'can't determine to add to my own Collection if I may use so fine a word or I agree with you that I ought to purchase Mr. Hartstones which is an admirable head!' He is enclosing a paper not present with unimportant matter and he asks Allnutt and his wife to 'keep it as a record of my opinions on two or three subjects in art and as conveying my own genuine thoughts & Feelings on Characters that preceded me in the Chair! / The Picture that gain'd the Prize was by Mr: Hartstone who has now still more justified the Academys decision'. The firm was established in 1908 from the merger of two family firms of wine merchants established in the early part of the nineteenth century. For many years they had outposts in Gibraltar East Africa and elsewhere in the British Empire. Written on commission the booklet discusses the role of wine in cooking and how to flamber marinate and chose wines before giving nine elegantly written recipes for French dishes using wine and a liqueur. With the permission of Saccone & Speed the content was incorporated into the first edition of David's French Country Cooking published by John Lehmann in 1951.<br /> <br /> One of the most scarce of David's publications.
