1753L4ADNKY1AWHWLeiden: Pieter van der Eyk 1753. Modern orange paper wrappers. 8vo. Rare first edition of a collection of pharmacological recipes in Dutch that had no official authorization published to meet the needs of apprentices and pharmacists with little or no knowledge of Latin the language of the pharmacompoeia which were officially authorized by governments or medical or pharmacological associations and to avoid misuse quackery and the production and selling of quack remedies. The compilers aim nevertheless to present reliable pharmacological recipes based on the best available sources such as the works of Herman Boerhave 1668-1738 and Etienne Fr. Geoffroy 1672-1731. While some phamacopoeia were translated into Dutch and other vernacular languages Van der Eyk apparently thought less educated readers also needed a different approach to make the information clear. In 1766 he published a second augmented edition.Corners slightly bumped slightly soiled and water-stained throughout not affecting the text. Otherwise in good condition.l STCN 1 compl. & 2 incompl. copies; Vaderlandsche letteroefeningen 6 1766 pp. 452-254. Pieter van der Eyk, unknown
Previous owner's name and date obscured with marker pen in top corner of front end paper. Otherwise a very clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards, creasing to a few page corners and no bumping to corners. Dust jacket not price clipped or marked or torn with light creasing to upper edge. 255pp. Recipes and recollections from one of our most brilliant and controversial chefs. Since opening the doors of the first Chez Nico in Dulwich in 1973, Nico Ladenis has towered over the London restaurant scene. This book is the culmination of his lifetime's experience. With Erratum slip for pp74-75 'Ravioli of Lobster with Truffle Sauce'.
16mo., with an engraved frontispiece (original tissue guard present), engraved and printed titles, and 34 wood-engraved illustrations in the text, wanting Q8, some mild and occasional age-staining, neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper; original dark green cloth, boards elaborately blocked in blind, gilt back, neatly recased, a very good, tight copy. This attractive and compact edition of a culinary staple is enhanced by an unusual hunting scene as frontispiece; the title-vignette depicts a table of wildfowl and short quotation from Suckling. This must have been one of last the issues of Rundell before the onset of Beeton. This edition not in Cagle. Scarce.
16mo., with 16 engravings on 4 plates, and 20 engraved illustrations in the text, text lightly age-soiled throughout; newly bound in brown cloth to style, original cloth label lettered in gilt laid down, a very good, firm copy. From the 1820s until the sixty-sixth edition of 1842 the illustrations generally comprise a frontispiece (usually incorporating the title) and nine engraved plates illustrating cuts, carving and trussing. In the 'new' booksellers' edition of 1846 the frontispiece becomes a kitchen scene. This edition, produced in handy 'pocket' format, appears to be the first with the illustrations rearranged to show carving in the text, and the engravings of cuts and trussing presented in plate form, perhaps for greater clarity. Scarce. This edition not recorded by Cagle, Oxford or Wheaton & Kelly.
