ill., ril.

198016113171New York: Harry N. Abrams Inc 1980. Hardcover. Fine. Klimt Gustav. Elephant folio size 92 pp. illustrated in clamshell box with original shipping carton. A selection of erotic drawings by Gustav Klimt 1862-1918 published from a private collection focused on the nude female form most in frankly erotic poses. Klimt began his career in a conventional style but as he developed his work became intensely personal focusing on the beauty and eroticism of the female form. When he completed the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna in 1900 the paintings were criticised as being pornographic which led him to no longer accept public commissions; sadly these paintings were destroyed in 1945 by SS troops when the Nazis were in retreat from the city. While his style is certainly frankly erotic his talent has been confirmed by the prices recently brought by his paintings which are some of the highest recorded for individual works of art.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Cream cloth with author stamped in blind inlaid paper label to upper board with one of Klimt's illustrations gilt lettering on the spine cream-coloured endpapers frontispiece one of thirty-five full-page facsimiles volume opens with a lengthy essay "Klimt: Drawing Against Morality" followed by the thirty-five plates each printed on one side only and numbered followed by the plate descriptions; elephant folio size 16.5" by 12.25" pagination: 1-4 5-87 1 colophon first English language edition. 1931187360Vienna: Osterreichischen Staatsdruckerei 1931. One of 30 prints from the Eine Nachlese/Dernière gerbe/An Aftermath portfolio. This is the first reproduction of Klimt's original painting Max Eisler 1881-1937 the publisher of this print was an art historian at Vienna University who published the first Klimt monograph in 1914. He intended Eine Nachlese to complement Das Werk the only folio set produced in Klimt's lifetime which was overseen by Klimt up to 1913. The collotype produces fine tonal gradations sharp detail and a continuous-tone effect unmatched by most other photomechanical processes. However the surface of the gelatin-coated plate is extremely delicate and can break down under friction or over-inking. Plates wear out quickly giving a short print-run and maintaining consistent humidity during printing is crucial - even small fluctuations can ruin the plate. As a result collotype printing is slow exacting and vulnerable to failure but when successful it yields some of the finest printed images ever produced. Edition of 500. Collotype in colours on chine colle paper laid down on heavy cream wove paper with untrimmed deckled edges. Image size: 30.8 x 31 cm. Sheet size: 48 x 45.5 cm. Framed size: 59 x 56.3 cm. Presented in a handmade gold leaf frame with conservation acrylic glazing. Excellent condition. unknown

br.
A Vienna, lusso calma e voluttà; a Parigi, orrore, bruttezza, disarmonia.
