Gustav Klimt, figura controversa e affascinante nel panorama artistico della Vienna di fine Ottocento, ha dato vita a un vasto catalogo di opere pittoriche, a numerose creazioni grafiche e a un'incalcolabile quantità di schizzi e disegni. In questo volume un vasto repertorio iconografico, riprodotto con dovizia di particolari, ripercorre la sua vicenda umana e artistica conducendo il lettore dall'incanto delle prime allegorie alle "scandalose" visioni oniriche dei quadri per l'Università, attraverso l'esperienza "totale" della mostra di Beethoven o della sala da pranzo di Palazzo Stoclet, fino a esplorare la sensualità dell'universo femminile e, con i paesaggi, i luoghi dell'anima. Un caleidoscopico mondo percorso da potenti vibrazioni cromatico-luminose e abitato da presenze magiche e sensuali si schiude al nostro sguardo stupito.
ill. Questo cofanetto raccoglie i capolavori di Gustav Klimt, che fece proprio il motto «A ogni epoca la sua arte. All'arte la sua libertà ». Accompagnato da un libretto esplicativo, presenta in formato a fisarmonica cinquanta opere emblematiche di un'arte nata sotto il segno del rinnovamento e della rottura col passato. Il motto è quello della Secessione viennese, movimento fondato nel 1897 e a cui Klimt aderì sviluppando stilizzazione, arabeschi e una sfavillante profusione decorativa per sublimare soprattutto l'immagine del corpo femminile. Fra ritratti mondani, allegorie e paesaggi, fra dipinti a cavalletto e decorazioni di palazzi privati, questo cofanetto riassume l'essenziale di un'opera iconica.
