First printing of an important book showing 72 standard costumes worn for 72 religious orders mostly Italian orders seventeenth century. There is a section devoted to the east and one plate to an order in India. Odoardo Fialetti whose real name was Edouard Viallet provided the remarkable engravings. The dedicatory epistle is addressed to Pierre de La Porte first valet de chambre of Louis XIV. / Trichet du Fresne described as erudite he took his education at the College de Guyenne Paris. While working for the brother of Louis XIII Gaston d'Orleans 1608-60 he acquired works of art on buying excursions. He began his career as a bookseller before becoming corrector at the newly established Imprimerie du Roi in 1640. In 1651 he published Leonardo da Vinci's treatise on painting Trattato della pittura which had circulated in manuscript form. His Trattato contained an early biography of Leonardo and Alberti and contained a list of books at the end forming the first annotated bibliography of art literature Dictionary of Art Historians. After the death of Naude he was appointed librarian of Queen Christina of Sweden. His own library comprised about 10000 volumes. Colbert acquired his manuscripts from his widow Francoise Duvivier for the Royal Library for 27700 livres. The printed books were bought by Nicolas Fouquet after whose disgrace and imprisonment they were confiscated and incorporated into the Royal Library in 1665. Third and final instalment of the Archaeological mission to Arabia series published by the Societé des Fouilles Archéologiques between 1909 and 1922 this issue dedicated entirely to the famous qusur or qasr: so-called desert castles of the Umayyad Caliphate 661-750 CE; AH 41-132: Quseir Amra a hunting lodge Qasr Al-Kharanah and Qasr Tuba in present-day northeastern Jordan. The authors found the previously published description of Qasr Harâna and Qasr Tûba faulty and unreliable and re-describe them completely. They give numbers of views of Qeseir Amra and a briefer description. The text includes also itineraries and historical and epigraphical notes. It is well arranged and seems to supply all the information that can possibly be wanted; the plans and views too are excellent. JRAS.Slight traces of worming in foot margin no loss of text. The interior scene shows Greek philosophers Plato left and Aristotle right in the center surrounded by groups of other philosophers and mathematicians. In the lower left foreground Pythagoras writes in a book; at right Euclid demonstrates a compass to four young men. The preface contains a paragraph by Klopstock the German editor and Fuessli. Court painter to the King of Poland he joined the Spanish court at the behest of Charles III King of Spain; his paintings quite early in the neoclassical taste see his Cleopatra secured him fame and wealth and the writings he left on painting and the arts are marked by research and subtlety. One of 700 numbered copies on velin de Rives from a total edition of 781 in a unique fine binding signed E. Berthet. The upper board with a large painted and incised panel after one of Freida's plates the lower board with a smaller panel after a tailpiece and the central spine compartment with an additional design by the binder. First published in 1890 after serialisation in the Revue des Deux Mondes 1889 Thais is among France's best-known contes philosophiques: the story of the Alexandrian courtesan Thais and her conversion by the ascetic monk Paphnuce whose own spiritual certainty disintegrates in the process. Issued in the year of France’s death this finely illustrated edition is the most desirable of the few books illustrated by Raphael Freida 1877-1942 a pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens. His illustrations emphasise the work’s underlying eroticism sharpening the tension between ascetic renunciation and sensual desire that defines the narrative. Text is in French.
