A beautiful set of etchings by the French engraver Gérard Audran 1640-1703 reproducing frescoes by Raphael printed from the original plates by the Louvre's chalcography workshop during the mid-nineteenth century.</p><p>In 1517 Agostino Chigi commissioned Raphael to decorate the ground floor loggia of the Villa Farnesina in Rome in which the artist had painted his 'Galatea' a few years before. The series of frescoes which Raphael produced traced the story of Cupid and Psyche a myth derived from the Golden Ass of Apuleius 2nd Century A.D. The present set of etchings first produced c.1662-1690 document each of the fourteen lunettes of the entrance loggia depicting various cupids accompanied by the animals and other assorted attributes representative of the deities who had paid homage to Love.</p><p>The Chalcographie du Louvre was established in 1797 with the purpose of collecting and preserving engraved copperplates as well as for establishing a workshop of skilled printers who would produce new impressions from the original plates on historic presses. Originally made up of the plates from Louis XIV's personal collection 'The King's Cabinet' the Calcography went on to acquire several thousand further plates and is still in operation today. 65947Tiny print representing the Biblical episode of the Visitation the pregnant Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth also pregnant with St. John.Signed on bottom right: ""R. Sadeler excud."" with two verses of Latin text below: ""Spectabam pulchro vinciri brachia nexu / Et dixi: haec inter vincula captus ero"". Possibly designed to decorate a small book like the ""Otium Spirituale"" published in Munich in 1617 by Anna Bergia with plates by Sadeler. The closest composition to this is perhaps the Visitation by Maarten de Vos engraved by Johann Sadeler: on the Virgin's back hangs a hat and her right arm unfolds outwards to hold the shoulder of Elizabeth. The elder woman's right hand reaches around the neck of Mary. In this small impression the respective husbands of the women stand on each side of the representation whereas in de Vos' they stand both on one side. Rare. Engraving on paper with small margins; plate mark: 78 x 48 mm total: 85 x 54 mm; traces of previous mountings; undocumented in Hollstein. unknown
134382Hardcover. Good ex-library. the bindings are in excellent condition but the volumes are scrapbooks and all items were pasted in with glue. furthermore the mounting paper is acidic and has become quite brittle. as a result many of the programs are wavy from the paste are toned from the paper or have edgewear. still it's a very interesting and unique collection. 4 volumes. Black library buckram in black library slipcases. Not paginated. Oversize and quite bulky. The title for these volumes is merely descriptive as they were not formally published. They are nicely bound scrapbooks containing of newspaper clippings advertisements and handbills and programs for a variety of concerts and performances chiefly in New York City. The contents were collected by Louis Raphael Dressler an organist conductor occasional composer and a charter member of the Manuscript Society who was also very active in the New York music scene for over 50 years. This would be a great one of a kind collection for researchers or connoisseurs interested in New York's music and theatrical milieu or performing artists and arts organizations during the years listed. hardcover books
