The reproductions of Holbein's initials were done by Heinrich Loedel and each page is given an => exquisite death-themed wood-engraved border by Léon le Maire after designs from a Book of Hours printed by Simon Vostre. The alphabet is represented excluding J and U by magnificent engraved historiated letters five of which are repeated.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Chocolate brown morocco covers framed and panelled in blind with gilt-tooled corner fleurons and gilt strapwork central medallions; spine with blind-ruled raised bands and gilt-stamped title and date and cover fleurons repeated in compartments; turn-ins with wide composite gilt rolls. All edges gilt; striking and distinctive marbled endpapers. => Signed by binder L. 178033441780 In8 Reliure en plein chagrin noir, 4 faux nerfs, titre frappé d'or, (1) titre, (1) faux titre, Chrétien de Méchel, graveur de « S.A.S Monseigneur l’electeur Palatin » a entrepris ce travail en 1780, date de la destruction du cimetière des innocents à Paris où se trouvait la grande danse des morts, peinte par les frères Limbourg. Gravant d’après les dessins originaux de Hans Holbein, il regroupa ses cuivres dans une édition in Folio en douze planches contenant chacune quatre gravures. Cette édition publiée à Bale à compte d’auteur eut un tirage très restreint. L’imprimeur Simon Rançon, eu l’idée en 1854 de remettre en vente ces gravures originales sous forme d’un In 8 composé des tirages originaux massicotés en quatre parties et montés sur onglets. Cette édition est d’une grande rareté.

Signature of Harriet Monroe in pencil on the first free end paper. In original publisher's brown cloth with gilt title to front cover spine covering perished but binding holding. Red and black title page 49 copies of woodcuts and a facsimile of the original 1538 French title page. Forty-one of the woodcuts were according to Dobson cut 11 years before 1538 while the remaining 8 were added after that edition. Accompanying each woodcut is a verse in Latin with the antique French below it. Harriet Monroe 1860 1936 was an American editor scholar literary critic poet and patron of the arts and the founding publisher and long-time editor of Poetry magazine which she established in 1912. As a supporter of the poets Wallace Stevens Ezra Pound H. D. T. S. Eliot William Carlos Williams Carl Sandburg Max Michelson and others Monroe played an important role in the development of modern poetry. Interior is in good condition. The tissue protector for the title page is heavily browned and cracking away at the gutter the binding is a bit shaken but otherwise the book is clean and unmarked save for Monroe's signature and a small bibliographic note on the verso of that page. Hollar from the original painting of Hans Holbeing including Danse of Macaber: In a contemporary English gold-tooled painted calf binding. Wencelas Hollar is viewed a one of the formost engravers of his time late 1600 his copper plates were known to be in use until the mid-1800's. Holbein is regarded as the premier portrait painter of all time and was attached to the court of Henry VIII. of the many copies of the Dance of Death this one is quite scarce There is a copy in the British Library.
