Tall 8vo 9 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches 234 x 148 mm; half-title hand-colored frontispiece title with vignette of St. Paul's xvi 376 pp 8 pp. advertisements. 3 foldout pages of music with Corinthian Tom's Song. 36 aquatint plates with hand-coloring each with protective blank sheet with offset from facing illustration; copious small in-text woodcuts. Later full red pebbled morocco with original spine panel single gilt fillet framing on boards gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers double raised bands with gilt and decorative motifs in compartments all edges gilt; spine very lightly rubbed. Second edition as stated at the foot of page 9. Tooley 198; Prideaux 335. A beautifully illustrated and hand-colored volume. Pierce Egan 1772-1849 was a British journalist sportswriter and writer on popular culture best-knows work is Life in London first published in 1821. The book was adapted into the stage play Tom and Jerry or Life in London later that year and it became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. Egan turned to the Cruikshank brothers Robert and George for the illustrations. They produced 21 woodcuts and 36 lively and colorful plates to represent the range of characters and situations described in the book. The success of Life in London was so great that the artists could not color the engravings quickly enough for the demand. The book was adapted for the stage later that year and the play Tom and Jerry or Life in London became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. The book was reprinted in 1822 1823 1830 1841 1870 and 1904. Numerous imitations soon appeared namely Carey's Life in Paris Real Life in London Real Life in Ireland et al. 18653790London: Bradbury & Evans 1865. First edition. Third issue with Part I's title Mr. Facey Romford's Hounds in solid lettering in the original twelve monthly parts May 1864-April 1865. Octavo 8 3/4 x 5 5/8 in; 223 x 144 mm.Collating vi 2 391 1 with twenty-four hand-colored steel-engraved plates two to each volume heightened with gum arabic. The illustrations to Parts VIII-XII are unsigned but by Hablot K. Brown aka "Phiz." The woodcut on the upper wrapper is by Hablot K. Brown. Advertisements collate per Schwerdt save Part VI which lacks the Note of Lever's Martin and Part VII lacking the slip for The Belle of the Village. Publisher's original red-brown pictorial wrappers. Minimal restoration of spines to a few volumes tiny chip to fore- edge of Part I otherwise an excellent and quite lovely set. Chemised and housed in a red cloth clamshell case with black leather spine label lettered in gilt. "Although Surtees approached his publishers in July 1861 with the idea of bringing out 'Mr. Facey Romford' they preferred not to undertake the matter until Mr. Leech's services were definitely secured and there would be no questoin of such delays as had occurred in the illustrations of 'Handley Cross.' Leech promised however to being in January 1862 and the situation seemed sufficiently secure to set up the type but just at this time the artist held his first exhibition of oil paintings which proved so successful and diverting that the 'Facey Romford' illustrations were again postponed. Surtees in despair at last offered the book in August 1864 to The Field where is was refused. Two volumes octavo published in 1821 and 1822. 2: title verso blank iii-x 3-656; 2: title verso blank i-ix 1: blank 3-668 pp. Hand-colored engraved frontispiece and pictorial hand-colored title in each volume plus 30 hand-colored aquatint plates in the text. Later full crimson morocco triple-ruled in gilt; spine with raised bands lettered in gilt; gilt turn-ins; all edges gilt. Spine extremities and bands rubbed. Occasional mild toning and smudges. Complete with all 28 text plates called for in the Directions to the Binder along with an additional two plates "Tom and Bob Catching a Charley Napping" Abbey no. 34 and "St. George's Day Presentation at the Levee" Abbey no. 31. A very good or better set in a handsome signed binding by Riviere and Son. First edition later issue of this imitation of Pierce Egan's Life in London 1821. While sometimes attributed to Egan the work was possibly written by John Badcock. "Out of the sixty-five imitations of it which Egan stated that he had reckoned the most important was Real Life in London. which was published in sixpenny numbers in 1821 with excellent illustrations by Heath Alken Dighton Rowlandson and others. Real Life in London is a pleasanter book than its prototype. Some have held that Egan wrote it; but the author had a purer style a cleaner mind and a wider knowledge of London than Egan" The Cambridge History of English and American Literature. "From a bibliographical point of view one of the most complicated and bewildering books ever published rivaling Pickwick in the tangle of variant states that exist both in text and plates. The work had a tremendous success probably out-rivaling in popularity its prototype. A difficult feature of the book is that two printers. printed copies textually the same page by page with only minor variations in the settings and this coupled with the fact that during the eight or nine years it was being reprinted makes the whole vast output all 'first editions' but with innumerable states and variants that continually overlap one with the other" Abbey. "Originally published in 56 parts on completion the work was issued in boards. Later copies were bound in publisher's cloth. A book full of contrarities and difficulties for the bibliographer there being innumerable variations of the plates. The difficulties are further increased by many copies in modern bindings having been completed or made up of different issues giving combinations that are not true variations" Tooley. Printers: R.
