A single issue of this leading avant-garde journal of the eponymous artistic group Levyi front iskusstva Left front of the arts: LEF edited by the futurist poet and artist Vladimir Mayakovsky. Published monthly 1927-1928 twenty-four issues of the journal appeared in total. The original LEF published 1923-1925 introduced Constructivist design and formulated "productivism" as a movement in the arts. The editorial team also understood art as playing a central role in the class struggle. By 1925 just seven issues of the central organ of the Russian avant-garde had appeared. Due to massive criticism of its apparent incomprehensibility to the masses the journal was discontinued. Two years later the series continued under the name Novyi LEF New LEF for two more years with the final year appearing under the direction of Sergei Tretiakov. From the beginning Aleksandr Rodchenko was responsible for the cover design having won a cover design contest in 1923. See John Bowlt and Béatrice Hernad Aus vollem Halse Munich 1993 p. 135f. The 1927-1928 issues focused on Factography or "photography of fact" with a special interest in left-leaning cinema. The new publication positioned itself against the "poor taste" and "lack of class-consciousness" of art of the NEP period. Aware of the upcoming drive toward industrialization the editorial team understood the "twinning of art with production a necessary factor in the industrialization of the country." Novyi LEF featured Rodchenko's photographic experiments which were highly controversial at the time characterized by extreme perspectives dynamic oblique views and spatial superimpositions that significantly influenced the photography of the New Vision see Claudia Gabrielle Philipp in: Kat. This is a very good hardcover copy in the original binding of brown marbled paper boards with an all-over green design. There is a large printed paper label with the title inset in an elaborately lithographed Gothic style frame. Tan paper covered spine of dark green cloth. The edges of the covers have a little wear. Inside there is an elaborately detailed title-page followed by 32 of 40 numbered plates. No evidence of plates being removed, as binding still very tight, but normally with 40 plates. All plates are black & white lithographs showing an amazing variety of typefaces and alphabets. Many are composed out of very imaginatively worked animals, plants, people or inventions forming the letters. A classic of this genre, here an incomplete copy with various faults, such as browning, tiny foxing, and 2 instances of later careful coloring of initials on different plates. Quite rare in the original binding. Large oblong folio, 11" high X 13 1/2" wide. Call or e-mail for digital photos. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

Most comprehensive and richly illustrated reference work of the world's second largest tapestry collection, nowadays based in the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum and once inherited by the Habsburg court. - Contents: Present particularly rare edition contains of 271 original photographies and 30 halftone prints of 301 (of about 900) tapestries made in the regions of Brussels (16th - 18th ct.) or Lorraine (18th ct.), once accumulated by the Habsburg emperors while controlling those territories. Each of the captions contain information about the title, date and place of production as well as inventory number. The exhaustive descriptions of art historian Ludwig Baldass also quote the measurements of the tapestries. - Condition: All traceable copies are loose sets of plates in publisher's portfolios with wrappers, i.e. like published. Our copy instead is skilfully bound in solid and elegant half morocco, though lacking the original wrappers. Joints in parts skilfully restored and with some little wear, otherwise very fine. - Rarity: Present edition was published in 300 numbered copies only, however our copy is without numbering. ABPC, Drouot Digital, LotSearch and JAP record 5 sets at auction since the 1970s (2006, 1988, 1987, 1984 (2), none of them bound like present.

XXVIII slightly bumped at upper edge; generally a well preserved portfolio throuhout, in all language variants a very rarely offered item indeed. – Rarity: As of August 27th 2021 there is no other copy available at the market in any of the versions. OCLC and KVK show only 5 copies of the Czech original version in institutional holdings outside of the Czech Republic (Cambridge UL, Cleveland PL, Harvard, Saint Louis PL, Paris [BnF]), none of them cataloguing the originally enclosed booklet.
