1910156South Dakota 1910. Very good. Eighteen glass plates eight measuring 3 x 4 inches four colored and ten of them 4 x 5 inches. With photographs printed from the plates. No cracking minimal chipping at edges. Two small sets of images depicting life in South Dakota at the turn of the century. The first consists of ten images of settlers and scenes on the prairie. There are two plates of women with tents and covered wagons a nice image of a woman and several girls playing what appears to be Ring Around the Rosie an image which is captioned on the photographic print "steam driven water well drilling rig" an early airplane and some settlers outside a homestead. The second series would seem to be from Pine Ridge Indian Agency. These include two photographs which are clearly of Native American children one of them depicting boys with short hair and "civilized" clothes three plates which depict a rodeo in the area an image of someone in a feathered headdress near a teepee and plates of people with horses. unknown books

The trip begins on a steamer off the Florida Coast with stops at New Orleans Arizona Texas Mexico and on to California. Images in the Southwest include Native American street vendors in Yuma adobe houses in El Paso and the prison and post office in Juarez. In California where the bulk of the images were taken the group visits Los Angeles Ocean Beach the ostrich farm at Pasadena Long Beach Catalina Island Santa Barbara San Francisco and Berkeley. Higgins 1834-1917 was Speaker of the British Columbia Legislature. "I have adhered as closely as possible to descriptions of the peculiarities of speech and mode of life of the men and women who peopled the Pacific Coast forty or fifty years ago. The stories of the occult which comprise several chapters are left to the judgement of wiser heads than mine. I have seen much that puzzled and mystified me and I am still seeking light thus far with indifferent success. The reminiscent stories are all founded upon actual occurrences and in the years to come may be found of value to the student of early events in California and the British Pacific.
