"In 1978-80 the committee advertised across North America for information about the people who had lived in Kaslo between 1890 and 1915. A very gratifying response resulted. Letters were also sent to individuals who were relatives and friends of the early families in Kaslo and whose addresses were known. The Reverend Peter Reginald Kelly D.D. was born to an aristocratic Haida family in the Queen Charlotte Islands in 1885. Sent to a Methodist boarding school by his deeply religious parents Kelly developed into a leader of men. In 1910 he was selected to head a delegation of more than a hundred Indian leaders who met in Victoria to discuss their grievances with the provincial government. In 1913 he became the first Indian admitted to Columbian College and was later ordained a minister in the Methodist church. For 16 years he and his wife were in charge of the Thomas Crosby a famous mission and mercy boat operating on one of the wildest parts of the B.C. coast.
