Reliure ancienne (fin 17e - début 18e) en plein veau, dos à nerfs orné de caissons à fleuron doré, étiquette manuscrite au dos, fleuron aux angles et au centre des plats, roulette dorée sur les coupes, tranches mouchetées rouge. (reliure frottée avec manque de cuir aux coiffes et au dos, deux coins émoussés, mors faibles, feuillets uniformément brunis, brunissures se révélant plus fortes à plusieurs feuillets notamment à la fin du tome premier, manque de papier au milieu d'un feuillet entraînant la perte de quelques mots, erreur de numérotation à quelques pages, ouvrage court en tête). Marque au titre, bandeaux et lettrines. Divisé en sept livres, cet ouvrage publié pour la première fois en 1592 à Bordeaux (Brunet, III-1869) est un témoignage important pour l'étude de l'histoire civile et militaire de la France au seizième siècle. Les leçons militaires consignées dans ce livre l'ont fait appeler par Henri IV " la Bible des soldats ". Signature ancienne en regard du titre.
