Nice contemporary English full calf binding with 6 raised bands to spine, compartments gilt. Blindstamped line-borders and gilt ornamented centre-pieces to boards. All edges of boards gilt. Title-label removed from spine, gilding to edges of boards occasionally worn off. Wear to extremities. Inner hinges open into the cords, binding still tight, but boards don't close properly. 18th century inventory number to verso of fist leaf. Owner's inscription, dated ""Ups. 1749"" (i.e. Uppsala) to title-page. Old owner's name cut off from top of title-page, far from affecting lettering. Occasional minor browning or soiling, but all in all very nice and clean. Several woodcut ornamental vignettes and initials. 1 (blank, except for signature-mark ""A""), 3 ff + pp. 1-196, 2 ff. (separate dated title-page for ""The second booke of this commentarie vpon the diuine prophesie of Daniel"" + dedication) + pp. 197-520, 8 ff (Table of the questions & Controversies + errata) + final blank. Fully complete. Several mispaginations.

Handsomely bound in early 20th c. grey paper covered boards with vellum spine title at spine "Conversion of Eve - Cohan - London - 1680". 3 leaves 27 pages with newer end papers. Near Fine a few light scattered spots of toning. early corrections at p.8 line 24 and p.25 line 23 and small hole at p.8 line 9. With the book plate of Alfred Rubens at front paste down and with TLS laid in on E.P Goldschmidt & Co. Ltd. letterhead dated 16th May 1933 to A. Rubens Esq. - "Dear Sir We have lately found a copy of a pamphlet which we believe may interest you." and signed in ink by E. P. Goldschmidt. Alfred Rubens 1903-1998 was an English collector and historian and chairman of the London Jewish Museum for many years. Ernst Philip Goldschmidt 1887-1954 was a legendary bookseller scholar and bibliophile. And although no indication internally this copy most recently from the collection of Joel Silver Director of the Lilly Library. A marvelous rare book world copy indeed ! The baptism and conversion to Christianity of Eve Cohan caused a huge uproar in late 17th century London. She converted to be married to Michael Verboon and her parents tried to have him arrested. Ex libris contrecollé sur la doublure (premier contreplat) de tous les volumes. Les volumes ont été reliés sans les pages de titre (volontaire). Exemplaire réglé à l'encre rouge. Très bel ensemble avec de minimes défauts d'usage (un mors partiellement fendu et consolidé au deuxième volume, infimes frottements, petits manques de cuir à deux coiffes inférieures, petit travail de vers sur une doublure sans gravité). In contemporary limp vellum with double gilt line-borders with gilt cornerpieces (in the form of dragons) to boards and gilt super ex-libris (Cardinal Borghese) to both boards. All edges coloured in red. Two different Ex-libris to inside of front board and front free end-paper respectively (see below for provenance). Spine with a bit of loss of the vellum, partly showing the cords. Last three leaves with worm-tracts in lower margin. Dual-language text, Latin/Armenian, in two columns. A very nice copy with a most attractive provenance. (8), 275 pp. Provenance: - Cardinal Borghese, most likely Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1576 – 1633), one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in Rome during the first third of the seventeenth century. A legendary art collector, he commissioned sculptures that would come to define the Baroque movement. - Prince Borghese, likely Marcantonio Aldobrandi (1814-86). - Petrus Souilla, a French priest in ‘Sarlaten’, probably Sarlat-la-Canéda in the south of France, possibly a Pierre Souillac.
