Fællestitelbladet repareret i kanter, ellers gennemgående i god stand. Af en bogtrykt etiket på indersiden af forpermen fremgår det, at geheimestatsminister Otto Thott har skænket bogen til Herlufsholm, og af en tilskrift (underskrevet Wad) fremgår det, at eksemplaret er udgået af Herlufsholms Bibliotek ved salg 8.12.1878 som dublet.

Af Salmerne foreligger blad 1-367 (af 370, men med 21 manglende blade ind imellem). De sidste 14 blade (Register og Efterskrift) mangler. Ialt foreligger 347 blade (= 694 sider) af 412. Hele vejen igennem med kraftige brugsspor, rifter, nedslidte hjørner m.v. Salmeafdelingen (den mest komplette afdeling) er med talrige noder. Et af de foreliggende blade af Fortalen har en træstukken illustration, ligeledes blad 1 af Salmerne.

(table et privilège), 32 planchesÉDITION ORIGINALE de ce magnifique livre illustré baroque. “Les personnes pieuses recherchent ce livre pour le texte, et les curieux à cause des 32 gravures qui le décorent” disait Brunet V, 577. Les pratiques spirituelles enseignées par le Père Sucquet, un de ces merveilleux jésuites de la première génération, sont un incontestable passeport pour la vie éternelle, mais ce sont les 32 planches qui rendent le livre désirable.Ce sont de véritables tableaux “au raffinement élaboré, avec des coups d’oeil vers l’enfer et des échappées sur le Paradis” dixit Mario Praz. p. 195. Ces figures emblématiques, ici en PREMIER TIRAGE (1 frontispice et 32 planches hors-texte), sont un véritable bestiaire fantastique où rodent “quaerentes quem vorent” satyres, harpies, goules, lycanthropes, sauriens humanoïdes et tarasques. Le pêché est symbolisé par un personnage à pieds de bouc et tête de rapace huppé. Cette impressionnante illustration est de Boèce de Bolswert, qui avec son frère Schilte a souvent gravé pour Rubens. Hymans trouve que “parmi les graveurs de Rubens, Bolswert est celui dont l’entente de l’effet s’est le mieux manifesté et les éloges que tant d’écrivains attribuent légitimement à son frère, comme harmoniste et dessinateur peuvent bien lui revenir en partie” Funck. Le livre Belge à gravures p. 248. L’ouvrage répondait parfaitement aux mentalités de la Contre Réforme. Il connut un succès considérable : 17 éditions latines en 1630, ainsi que des traductions en français, allemand, anglais, espagnol, hongrois et polonais. Sommervoegel VII, 1690-91 - Hollstein III, 64. Exemplaire dans une intéressante reliure monastique, dans la tradition de celles du XVIe siècle. An old dealer has indicated the book is form the library of the famed chief Justice John Jay Marshall which I am not able to confirm or deny. "Among the prominent Dutch Hebraists and theologians was Johannes Leusden from the University of Utrecht. One of his most important studies the Philologus Hebræus editio princeps Utrecht 1656 goes far beyond a philological research of the Hebrew language and is a comprehensive study of Judaism and Jewish life. " An entire chapter is devoted alone to Kabbalah and the Kabbalists. For those interested in bibliography there is a pioneering section detailing the known surviving manuscripts of the Bible. Leusden also edited very important editions of the Hebrew Bible including the fames 1661 Athias edition.
