Er "nimmt unter den streng lutherischen Theologen der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts eine der ersten Stellen ein ... An gelehrter Gründlichkeit und Scharfsinn übertraf er seine gleichzeitigen Parteigenossen, an Verdienst ist er sogar der Dritte nach Luther genannt worden" (ADB). In seiner Schrift wandte sich Hunnius vehement gegen den Calvinismus und begründete damit die lutherische Frühorthodoxie und seine Lehre des ?Gnadenuniversalismus?. Eine zweite Ausgabe erschien 1600 bei Georg Müller in Wittenberg (VD16 H 6142). Von besonderem Interesse ist der große Textholzschnitt, der Christus als jugendlichen Salvator mit der Weltkugel zeigt, auf der man Adam und Eva am Baum der Erkenntnis mit Mond und Sonne sieht. Christi Hand ist zum Segensgestus erhoben, während sein Antlitz von der Strahlenaureole hinterleuchtet wird. Auf Wolkenbänken umgeben ihn 10 Putti, die die Arma Christi, die Marterwerkzeuge seines Martyriums präsentieren. Über seinem Haupte schwebt der Heilige Geist als Taube und ganz oben ist ? der Trinität entsprechend ? Gottvater als drei hebräische Buchstaben dargestellt. In what appears to be the original smooth hard vellum leather stitching at joints spine darkened with old hand lettered title. Interior old bookplate partially removed with some faint penciling in the front end pages. Red and black title page has old library embossure text is lightly toned has a very few occasional marginalia otherwise clean and unmarked. The plates are nice one folding plate has an old repair to a fold on the verso. All plates present all complete. The first edition "A very rich and beautifully equipped book" with 7 portrait panels showing historical portraits of Luther and his family and more than 200 coin depictions showing portraits Melanchthon is one cityscapes historical events etc. The coins are related to Luther and the Reformation. Since the beginning of the Reformation coins and medals have been important ways to commemorate Luther. The author of this study on Luther's life Christian Juncker 1668-1714 was a Saxon historian librarian and writer who was also a numismatist and who combined his interest in Protestant history with his fascination with coins in this unusual and beautiful book. He represented Luther's life via the medals and gained fame as an historian and numismatist as a result. Entirely in Latin except the last ad page which has fraktur German. Observations of King’s birthday followed in each subsequent year with the SCLC collecting three million signatures in support of a national holiday in 1971. Despite these efforts no bill honoring King would be signed into law until 1973 in Illinois. Offered here is a poster from one of these early celebrations in 1972.
