A type of chest with its distinctive mannerist-inspired tulip-and-oak-leaf carved façade. Laid into this copy is a Supplemental List of Hadley Chests. Discovered since publication of this book together with changes in ownership as reported published in 1938. One large sheet folded once. Boards have wear present to the extremities of the boards boards are scuffed and worn to the edges with a gouge missing front the front board. Foxing present. Lacking title page and first few leaves. One engraving torn in half several pages have tears and a hole present. Previous owner's name present to the reverse of the FFEP. Text is free of marks binding tight and solid. Editors were Johann Gerhard 1582-1637 theologian at Jena and his successor Salomon Glass 1593-1656 and others. This was the most popular German Bible of its time using Martin Luther's text of his 1545 edition including the Book of Ezra. The glossary and each chapter is accompanied by texts from S. Glassius' "Biblisches Handbüchlein" Nuremberg c. 1654 meant as a help for the lay reader. A detailed history of the conception and printing of this epochal Bible is given in the preliminaries.
