Interior very pretty flowered end papers with a withdrawn stamp first blank with a gift inscription from the author dated 25 Dec 1895 Montreal. Some occasional library stamps otherwise clean and unmarked. A scarce little title. Amaron 1852-1917 was a French-Canadian Presbyterian minister who "accepted a call to the French Protestant Church in Lowell Mass. to continue the work of evangelizing French Canadians. During the second half of the 19th century hundreds of thousands of French Canadians migrated south to work in the factories of New England: by 1900 they would form about 10 per cent of that regions population. Recognizing the need for educational institutions to support his evangelization Amaron founded the French Protestant College at Lowell in 1885." Dict. Of Canadian Biography. Amaron felt that the flood of Catholic French immigrants to New England was detrimental to the existing culture and that the immigrants needed to be converted to Protestantism or turned back. Originally published as 57p report in 1837 Sabin 92392. In Good condition with a faint tidemark through most of the textblock and wrappers mostly chipped away at the spine tentatively attached. "Stowe was actively interested in the improvement of the common schools regarding such improvement as the great need of the West." He became chair of Biblical literature in Lane Theological Seminary Cincinnati Ohio in 1833 and married Harriet Elizabeth Beecher in 1836. In 1836 the state of Ohio appointed him commissioner to investigate the public school systems of Europe especially of Prussia. For this congenial task he was given every facility in England and on the Continent. Returning in 1837 he published his famous Report on Elementary Instruction in Europe a copy of which the legislature put into every school district of the state." DAB. This is the first edition of the collected numbers of Calvin Colton's letters written with his "Junius" pseudonymn of and contains Tracts No. I - VIII; each tract paged separately at the top and about 16 pages each but book is also continuously paged at bottom. These tracts explore Whig philosophy in relation to the political climate of the day: slavery abolition Texas annexation public lands tariffs etc. Each tract about 16 pages and cover various topics: The Test The Currency The Tariff Life of Henry clay Political Abolition Democracy Labor and Captial The Public Lands etc. Colton began his career as a Presbyterian pastor in New York in the 1820's and became an accomplished writer first writing on religious topics but later on wrote a guide for immigrants Great Lakes travel and Indians politics history and is still noted for his biographical works on Henry Clay. The original publisher's covers are salmon and printed on rather thin & fragile paper. Corners of cover chipped with some loss of text on rear cover and last two pages are chipped at lower corner with minor loss of text. Light creases and edge wear to paper. <br /> <br /> Contents concern the nomination of Whig candidate Zachary Taylor and the Wilmot Proviso. The Wilmot Proviso would prohibit expansion of slavery in the newly acquired territories after the Mexican War. General Taylor a Southerner Mexican War hero and a Whig and Louisiana slave holder was seen by the author as a proponent of expanding slavery. However Taylor had expressed his view that he would not veto the Wilmot Proviso if he was elected. To the surprise of many who supported him in the south Taylor took anti slavery positions during his short term in office. <br /> <br /> Not in Sabin. Wilson & Damrell unknown

One internal signature loosened but still holding and attached. Several ownership/provenance markings to the front endpapers. Rear free endpaper seemingly excised. Contents mostly clean with mild scattered foxing. Quite scarce little book which defends the concept of literal corporeal resurrection which had been hotly debated amongst American Protestants in the mid-19th century. Kingsley died on a mission trip to Syria in 1870 and is buried in Beirut. The book is scarce; retained by a couple dozen institution but untraceable in the trade within the last half century. Published in 1891 by the French Protestant College of Springfield Massachusetts the 213-page book addresses the massive influx of French-Canadian immigrants into New England during the late 19th century. Amaron argues that the rapid growth of the French-Canadian population-which reached roughly 10% of New England's total population by 1900-poses an existential risk to the region's Anglo-Saxon Puritan-rooted heritage. The conflict surrounding the proviso set the stage for the American Civil War but highlighting section disputes and accelerated the collapse of the Whig party. President Taylor a slaveholding Southern Whig was initially believed to be in favor of the proviso while a candidate for the presidency. While President Taylor rejected the Proviso and attempted to diffuse the divide over slavery by creating slave Texas and free California. The author John C.
