Good. 48 pages : illustrations ; 22 cm OCLC 18756635 ; illustrated boards ; wear on edges ; "Tattine" by Ruth Ogden is a children's novel written in the early 20th century. The story revolves around a young girl named Tattine who grapples with the complexities of growing up love for animals and the realization that nature can be cruel. With her keen observation Tattine navigates her experiences with her pets particularly two setter dogs and finds herself in morally challenging situations concerning the natural behaviors of animals and the impact they have on her sensitive heart. The narrative follows Tattine through a series of adventures and encounters reflecting her innocent yet profound understanding of the world. After witnessing her dogs' natural hunting instincts which lead them to capture a rabbit Tattine struggles with her feelings of love for her pets and her sorrow for the harmed creatures. Throughout the book she also engages with friends goes on imaginative excursions and has heartwarming interactions with family. As Tattine learns about the inherent behaviors of different animals she begins to understand the concept of nature versus nurture leading to thoughtful reflections on compassion responsibility and the idea that while certain behaviors are instinctual love can guide our actions towards kindness. Overall "Tattine" presents a beautiful coming-of-age tale filled with heartfelt lessons that resonate with both children and adults. ; Contents: Chapter I Trouble No. 1 -- Chapter Ii. 1894113181New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1894. Octavo original decorated red cloth front and spine panels stamped in black and gold. First edition. A novella six short stories and three poems by a popular American author who did not find favor with subsequent critics. All have rustic settings though in various parts of the country thus disqualifying the book as regionalistic and dialect spelling. The stories in this collection tend towards the heavy and melodramatic in tone. The author's second collection; the first edition is scarce. "Several of these tales show a little effort a little lack of truth. Possibly the reason is not far to seek. For the most part these are not stories of Negro life with the humor and pathos of which Mrs. Stuart is so intimately familiar. Of such tales however there is one and a very charming one - 'Duke's Christmas.' It seems to come like the narrative of Miss Murfree for instance of Miss Wilkins or Miss Jewett of a disposition to find a soul of good in things ugly if not evil ; and of a conviction that the more or less uncouth characters of which these stories tell are abundantly worth knowing. Such a disposition and conviction are natural in the art of a democratic age." - William Dean Howells in The Atlantic Monthly Nov. 1894 p. 706. Wright III 5303. Cloth rubbed at spine ends and corner tips mild dust soiling to cloth a bright very good copy. #113181 Harper & Brothers Publishers unknown books
1897113179New York: Harper & Brothers 1897. Octavo original pictorial tan cloth. First edition. A novelette and six short stories by a popular American author who did not find favor with subsequent critics. All have rustic settings though in various parts of the country thus disqualifying the book as regionalistic and dialect writing and most have a light tone but "The Unlived Life of Little Mary Ellen" is about a mad woman who carries a doll about with her believing it to be her baby until she finally comes to believe it has died. The story has some effective touches of weird atmosphere; it is "sad and touching. the most complete piece of work which has as yet come from Mrs. Stuart's pen." - Laurence Hutton in Harper's New Monthly Magazine Vol. 95 Issue 570 Literary Notes p. 2. Wright III 5306. Early gift inscription on front free endpaper a bright near fine copy. #113179 Harper & Brothers unknown books
