Prior owner's inscription to the rear board 'G Greasby 1874'. Bookplate to the front pastedown Thomas Brigham. Small loss to the tissue guard. From the library of Allen and Beryl Freer. The Freers were avid art collectors and acquired quite the selection over the twentieth century of works mostly bought from the artists. Allen organised many exhibitions of artists he admired and published several works on art. Isaac Hawkins Browne was an English politician and poet. He imitated many contemporary poets such as Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. In a full calf binding. Externally smart. Cracks to the front and rear joint. Small loss to the head and tail of spine as well as to the extremities. Front hinge is strained but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright. Minor offsetting to the title page. Lathrop was a Captain and later a Major in the local militia. Isaac Ambrose baptized 1604-died 1664 was a Church of England clergyman and ejected minister and author "His Prima media & ultima first edition - 1650 while beginning with a call to new birth and ending with reflections on death and judgement that read like a collection of sermons is largely concerned with the 'middle things' - the means 'for continuance and increase of a Godly life.' These include a commitment to systematic meditation which is reinforced by a few illustrations from his own diary kept during his annual monthly retreat in May in the woods near Hoghton Tower. Ambrose's works were highly regarded at the time and continued to be reprinted after his death appearing in Wesley's Christian Library. Rare work. <br /> Alexander Selkirk 1676-1721 was marooned on Juan Fernandez Island off the coast of Chili from 1705 - 1709. He was eventually rescued by the crew of "The Duke" Captained by Woodes Rogers who published an account of Selkirk in his 1712 "A Cruising Voyage Round the World". Blake in Boston. Original leather hardcover hand-sewn binding with gilt stamped red spine label 304 pps.</p><p>Overall condition is fair. Leather is worn pages are age toned and a few have tiny tears at the edges. The is a lovely handwritten calligraphy-style inked notation by the previous owner on the ffep dated 1817. On the blank page preceding the back ffep a different owner wrote her name in pencil and the date 1796. Else no writing in pages. Front joint starting at top and corresponding interior joint with endpapers is split but still attached . The page edges show some swelling even as the binding itself remains firm. A few pages are not even with the rest see last picture - possibly as bound originally as they do not seem loose from the binding threads. A solid copy of this more than 200-year-old book! Isaac Watts 1674-1748 was a British theologian best known for writing popular hymns such as "Joy to the World."</p> Charles Pierce hardcover
