In his opening letter to Frey Nikelsburger does not hold back: "In your eagerness to convert the Jews to your way of thinking you make no scruples of converting and perverting the prophets by turning their words to a meaning which you conceive to be best adapted to your purpose; and in doing this you make them not only flatly contradict each other but themselves also."
"For American Jews Koul Jacob seemed an appropriate answer to Frey a Jewish convert to Christianity who had resumed his missionary activities shortly after his arrival in America. 189542255New York: published by Jacob H. Studer & Co 1895. Imperial 4to. 14 5/8 x 11 1/2 inches. 119 lithographed plates printed in colour and finished by hand after drawings by Theodore Jasper. Publisher's full brown morocco boards with blind-embossed decorations front board lettered gilt patterned endpapers all edges gilt

A vibrant and influential late 19th-century American ornithological work.

Jacob H. Studer created the present work with the aim of making ornithology accessible to a broader audience. Unlike earlier more expensive natural history folios Studer's publication was conceived as a more affordable guide for families schools and amateur naturalists an approach that contributed to its wide popularity and multiple subsequent editions the final appearing in 1903. The 119 chromolithographic plates many based on first-hand observation rather than copied from earlier works combine scientific clarity with a distinctly charming visual style. While less austere than Audubon and more accessible than the works of Baird or Ridgway the illustrations echo the warmth and immediacy of Wilson and his contemporaries helping to bridge the divide between academic ornithology and popular natural history. Studer's work serves as both a beautiful example of American chromolithography and a meaningful cultural artifact in the democratization of scientific knowledge at the turn of the century.

Cf. Modern quarter sheepskin with a morocco title and author label on the spine lettered in gold the year of publication lettered in gold below marbled paper sides blue sprinkled edges. 8vo. With 4 letterpress folding tables and numerous illustrations and figures on 16 folding plates lithographed by Guillaume Philidor van den Burggraaf Brussels. First edition of a rare Dutch technical handbook on clockmaking which was considered an important manual for the technical training of clockmakers at the time. It aimed to foster a more intuitive understanding of the concepts instead of explaining rules that students would learn at school. The work is divided into four parts: the first part treating basic mechanics the second the calculation and design of clockworks the third clock music and the fourth sundials. The whole is preceded by an introduction on the history of the profession. The work is illustrated with several technical plates and figures offering a visual explanation of the concepts described.Jacob Levi Smit ca. 1766-1826 was a master clock- and watchmaker from Groningen with more than forty years of experience. He was born in Friesland and likely learnt the profession in Leeuwarden where he worked for several years. A number of his clocks have survived. The present work is his only written publication and was intended for the students of the clockmakers school. The publishers preface tell us that Smit passed away on 1 November just as the main part of the text was being printed. A second edition appeared in 1836 and a third in 2011.With the owners stamp of M. Passenier Domburg on the half title. The spine is slightly rubbed. In the Netherlands ‘De nieuwe rijschool’ The new riding school published in 1856 was the first movable children’s book which reached their peak in the 1870s and 1880s. Haafner 1755-1809 was een Duits-Nederlands schrijver van reisverslagen. Hij bezocht Zuid-Afrika Voor-Indié en Ceylon en had een afkeer van westers kolonialisme en slavernij. J.G. Haafner 1755-1809 started his literary activities very late in life. His first travel-book was published in 1806 in Haarlem. The importance of Haafner's eyewitness accounts is that they were done during the decay of the VOC. Terpstra in his analysis of Haafner's views on colonialism as expressed in his works comes to the conclusion that Haafner was an anti-colonialist a man before his time for his ideas were not to be topical until more than a century had elapsed.
