Original issue of the New York Daily Tribune November 21 1863 featuring a very early printing of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Paper measures 15 5/8 x 19 7/8 inches. Typical disbound tears to spine not intruding into text save for a couple tears to final leaf but no loss of text. Uneven trimming to bottom edge with loss of a line of text on several pages. Front page headlines include "Entire Success of the Rio Grande Expedition" "Siege of Charleston" and "From the Army of the Ohio". The report from the Gettysburg Ceremonies and Consecration of the National Cemetery fill three columns on page 2. Lincoln's short speech was preceded by several other orators including Edward Everett's ninety minute speech. Lincoln's 271 word speech remains one of America's best known and memorable speeches soon to be published in newspapers throughout the United States. Some Eastern papers published the speech on November 20th. 1860116741Columbus: Follett Foster and Company 1860. First edition second issue with the Table of Contents on page ii of "the most important series of American political debates" Howes L338. Octavo original publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine and elaborate blind stamping to the front and rear panels. In very good condition. Ownership name. Although the debates were originally performed during the Illinois Senatorial race in 1858 they were published when both men became presidential candidates in 1860. Douglas won the race for senator but the debates were his undoing in the presidential race as Lincoln reminded voters repeatedly of the inconsistency between Douglas' principle of "popular sovereignty" in which the new territories would individually determine the status of slavery and the Dred Scott decision in which the Supreme Court declared that slavery would not be excluded from the territories by Congress. As a result Douglas was too tolerant of slavery for many northerners and not vigorous enough for Southern Democrats. Somewhat surprisingly for an attorney Lincoln did not seek Douglas' permission to publish a book of their combined speeches although Douglas was later given the last-minute opportunity--he declined--to make corrections to his own remarks" Morris 121. Mercklin 1664-1702 supplied corrections biographical material on authors and additions that included the innovative listing of articles from the publications of learned societies.</p> <p>This copy is from the library of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach the founder of modern anthropology. He was the author of De generis humani varietate nativa 1775 in which he divided humanity into four races based on head shape skin color and hair type; he later added a fifth race and in the expanded third edition of De generis 1795 he introduced the famous terms "Caucasian Mongolian Ethiopian American and Malayan" to describe the "white yellow black red and brown" varieties of mankind. Fine/Very Good. 8vo. 287pp. Beautiful First British Edition second issue of this classic "lost race" story published shortly after it's first appearance in Argosy magazine. Lacking the publisher's catalog in rear. Bound in red cloth with black borders and lettering. Square tight and clean throughout with little or no wear. A touch of off-setting to end-papers but remarkably well-preserved. Very attractive unclipped though unpriced dust-jacket 7/6 net on the spine panel has some fairly mild edge-wear and toning to spine. There are also small tape reinforcements to the joint and spine ends on the reverse which are seemingly unnecessary as there are no tears. Still fresh and bright example with no creases or chipping . A sharp collectable copy of a quite uncommon book scarce in dust-jacket and at a great price. Skeffington hardcover

Prospectus for the quite rare visual biography THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN made up of prints from the photograph collection of Frederick Hill Meserve. Meserve purchased nearly the entire Brady archive of Lincoln material and arranged for facsimiles of the numerous photographs to be published in the advertised volume which was limited to 102 copies. The book was published the following year. Meserve is considered to be the first great American photograph collector and he amassed the definitive collection of Abraham Lincoln photographs during his pursuits. Original copper engraving published 1624 in a Latin text edition of the famous historical atlas" Parergon by Abraham Ortelius. Printed from two plates. Latin text edition. Uncolored example in two sheets as published. Highly decorative engraving published from two double pages showing the dignitaries of the Holy Roman Empire. This engraving was published from 1593 for the first time in the atlas by Gerard de Jode. The plate was later acquired by Vrients and was then from 1603 onwards included in Ortelius' s "Theatrum" and the "Parergon". Our example was published 1624 in a Latin text edition of the Parergon."They represent the dignitaries entitled to choose German Emperors as instituted to end the turmoil and quarreling that occurred after the death of Charles the Great by Otto IV and the Pope. This plate shows left of the Emperor the highest ranking officials three ecclesiastical and four lay dignitaries. The second rank consists of four dukes and four marquesses the third of 8 earls." Broe. 201 Ortelius was born on 14 April 1527 in the city of Antwerp which was then in the Habsburg Netherlands modern-day Belgium. The Orthellius family were originally from Augsburg a Free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1535 the family had fallen under suspicion of Protestantism. Following the death of Ortelius's father his uncle Jacobus van Meteren returned from religious exile in England to take care of Ortelius. Abraham remained close to his cousin Emanuel van Meteren who would later moved to London. In 1575 he was appointed geographer to the king of Spain Philip II on the recommendation of Arias Montanus who vouched for his orthodoxy. He travelled extensively in Europe and is specifically known to have traveled throughout the Seventeen Provinces; in southern western northern and eastern Germany e.g. 1560 15751576; France 15591560; England and Ireland 1576; and Italy 1578 and perhaps twice or thrice between 1550 and 1558. Beginning as a map-engraver in 1547 he entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as an illuminator of maps. He supplemented his income trading in books prints and maps and his journeys included yearly visits to the Frankfurt book and print fair where he met Gerardus Mercator in 1554. In 1560 however when travelling with Mercator to Trier Lorraine and Poitiers he seems to have been attracted largely by Mercator's influence towards the career of a scientific geographer. According to Dr. Marcel van den Broecke it is based on "an anonymous 'Marca Anconitana' published in 1564 by Vincenzo Luchini Meurer p. 95. On the authority of Brandmair 1914 p. 71 Karrow attributes this map to Cæsar Orlandi see Hessels nr. 39". Ornate cartouche in the map of Siena with a text block about the bountiful supply of fish. French text on verso. This map corresponds to Dr. Marcel van den Broecke and Dr. Deborah van den Broecke-Günzburger's Ort 137 classification: "Occurrence in Theatrum editions and page number: 1587F74 250 copies printed last line left aligned: se sous le Pape. Meant to compete against a Century Magazine series which had been written by Lincoln's private secretaries John Nicolay and John Hay Tarbell's 20-part series The Life of Abraham Lincoln was a massive success and earned Tarbell a national reputation as a major writer and the leading authority on Abraham Lincoln. The popular series based on Tarbell's own original research and interviews helped boost McClure's circulation to over 250000 which climbed to over 300000 by 1900 and allowed McClure to buy a printing plant and a bindery.
