Includes both an initial illustrated title page with copperplate engravings surrounding the text Ma'aleh Bet Horin and a printed title page with decorative woodblock borders and the publisher's device. In addition to the Hebrew text a few sections throughout are in Judeo-German Yiddish printed in Vaybertaytsh script.<br /> <br /> This third edition of the famous Amsterdam Haggadah found the work reformatted into a smaller size and saw the title officially changed to Maleh Beit Horin meaning "house free men". Most of the same famous copperplate engravings by Abraham ben Jacob aka Abraham bar Yaccov that previously appeared in the 1695 and 1712 editions are retained here. The two images added to the 1712 second edition are included the illustrated order of the Seder and the complete ten plagues but four of the full series of images included in the first two editions are not present. These missing images are Abraham smashing the idols of his father Moses receiving the Ten Commandments a Mount Sinai Moses and Aaron coming to Pharaoh and the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. In our copy the engraved title and three other other engravings contain contemporary hand-coloring the rabbis of Bene Brak the Four Sons the angels visiting Abraham. <br /> <br /> The text of this third edition replaces the complete running commentary from Isaac Abravanel of the earlier editions with 3 additional text commentaries. These include the "Gevurot Hashem" from the Maharal of Prague Judah Loew ben Bezalel writings by Rabbi Moshe Alshich and "Olelot Ephraim" a collection of ethical homilies by Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim Luntschitz. However Abravanel's commentary is present following Yishtabach through the end of the Seder and in the initial six-leaf section preceding the text of the Passover seder which discusses the laws of Passover.<br /> <br /> This copy is lacking the original engraved map of the Holy Land at the rear as it was originally issued. Binding with some rubbing and abrasions to the original boards and spine. Interior with heaving staining to pages throughout with text still legible. Alexander Bradley Conn. 1767-1838 lawyer then judge in Pennsylvania who became assistant postmaster general and supervised the move of the general post office from Philadelphia to Washington DC. Known for his excellence in detailed mapmaking as well as his knowledge of postal routes he created to the first official map used by the US Postal Department which became the standard by 1825. His lay name was Johann Ulrich Megerle Not to be confused with his uncle Abraham Megerle de composer 1607-1680 . He has been described as "a very eccentric but popular Augustinian monk." In 1662 he joined the Catholic religious order of Discalced Augustinians and assumed the religious name by which he is known. In this order he rose step by step until he became prior provincialis and definitor of his province. Having early gained a great reputation for pulpit eloquence he was appointed imperial court preacher at Vienna in 1669. The people flocked to hear him attracted by the force and homeliness of his language the grotesqueness of his humour and the impartial severity with which he lashed the follies of all classes of society and of the court in particular. In general he spoke as a man of the people the predominating quality of his style being an overflowing and often coarse wit. There are however many passages in his sermons in which he rises to loftier thought and uses more dignified language. He died at Vienna on 1 December 1709. In his published writings he displayed many of the same qualities as in the pulpit. Perhaps the most favorable specimen of his style is his didactic novel entitled "Judas der Erzschelm" 4 vols. Salzburg 1686-1695. His works have been several times reproduced in whole or in part though with many spurious interpolations. The best edition is that published in 21 vols. Compiled between 1170 and 1180 while Maimonides was living in Egypt the Mishneh Torah is regarded as the author's magnum opus. It is the only Medieval-era work that surveys the full panoply of Jewish observance including those laws that are only applicable when the Jerusalem Temple is in existence. The present edition is the first to contain Judah Rosanes' commentary Mishneh le-melekh. "Mishneh Torah" The Repetition of the Law is an appellation originally applied to the biblical book of Deuteronomy; the subtitle "ha-Yad ha-Hazakah" The Book of the Strong Hand plays on its subdivision into fourteen books: the numerical value fourteen is represented in Hebrew letters as Yud 10 Dalet 4 which forms the word "yad" hand. Maimonides sought to provide a complete statement of the Oral Law so that a person who mastered first the Written Torah and then the Mishneh Torah would be in no need of any other book. Contemporary reaction was mixed with strong and immediate opposition focusing on the absence of sources and the belief that the work appeared to be intended to supersede study of the Talmud itself. Maimonides responded to these criticisms and the Mishneh Torah endures as an influential work in Jewish religious thought. According to several authorities a decision may not be rendered in opposition to a view of Maimonides even where he apparently militated against the sense of a Talmudic passage for in such cases the presumption was that the words of the Talmud were incorrectly interpreted. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death he is generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other works include "Kitab al-Siraj" a commentary on the Mishnah "Kitab al-Fara'I" a book on precepts and the celebrated philosophical work "Dalalat al-Ha'irin" known in Hebrew as the "Moreh Nevukhim" The Guide to the Perplexed. In this latter work Maimonides attempted a philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge.
