1689LTH1-E-10Cologne: Pierre Marteau 1689. Leather. Good Only. 9.5" by 7.5". None. A scarce and early collection of works discussing political issues surrounding restoration France and King Louis XIV. Written in French Written while the author was imprisoned the collection contains both parts one and two of L'Ambassadeur et ses Fonctions Reflaxions sur Les Memoires Pour Les Ambassadeurs et Rosponse Au Ministre Prisonnier and Discours Historique de L'election de L'Empereur et des Electeurs de L'Empire. Featuring illuminated capitals. Wicqufort was an intelligencer gazetteer and a diplomat of the second order who is remembered more for what he wrote than for his other accomplishments. Born in Holland Wicquefort nevertheless spent most of his diplomatic career in Paris. Here he served as resident of the Elector of Brandenburg-Prussia from 1626 until 1658 when having fallen foul of Mazarin he was first briefly imprisoned in the Bastille and then expelled. Invited to The Hague by John de Witt the Grand Pensionary of Holland Wicquefort was employed as a translator for the States General but chiefly as the Grand Pensionary's special secretary for French correspondence. In 1675 Wicquefort who had in the previous year also secured the appointment of resident in Holland of the Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle was accused by his enemies of selling state secrets. He was tried by the Court of Holland and despite his plea of diplomatic immunity imprisoned for life on the grounds that he remained a Dutch national in the paid service of its government to which he had taken an oath of secrecy. Sent like Grotius before him to the prison of Loevestein though he escaped to Celle in 1679 he devoted his time to furious writing. First published in the year before he died and subsequently reissued many times this became the most highly regarded manual of diplomacy of the eighteenth century. Disbound although with original rear board and backstrip. Generally firmly bound to the text block edge although with title page absent and the last few leaves detached yet present. Generally bright and clean although with the first page slightly age toned and with the odd spot throughout. Good Only Pierre Marteau hardcover

After a year he was released with a French pension and moved to The Hague as the representative of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Abraham Farissol or Peritsol was a learned Jew from Avignon who compiled his cosmographical works at the court of the Estes in Ferrara. The present text was composed in 1524-25 and first published in Hebrew at Venice in 1586. The Latin translation and notes in the present edition were prepared by the English orientalist and librarian Thomas Hyde 1636-1703 with the assistance of R. Isaac Abendana working from a manuscript which Hyde located in the Bodleian Library. “Each of its 30 chapters deals with a certain geographical area or subject. In addition many cosmological and historical matters are also treated. The author collected all the evidence he could regarding Jewish settlements in each country. The inclusion of a description of the New World makes Farissol the first Hebrew writer to deal in detail with the newly-discovered America. The 14th chapter of Iggeret Orhot Olam which deals mainly with the settlements of the Ten Lost Tribes is of special interest. According to Farissol’s introduction to this chapter it is clear that what moved him to undertake this investigation was the appearance in Italy in 1523 of David Reuveni many of whose descriptions are included in this work†EJ 6.1185. Reuveni was "an adventurer who aroused messianic hopes in the early 16th century" EJ 14.114. The appended work is a tract on Islamic customs by Albert Wojciech Bobowski a Polish Christian who converted to Islam after his capture by the Ottoman Turks. Adopting the name Ali Ufki Bey he served as translator court musician at Topkapi and as a notator of Ottoman classical music. Bell F26. Christian Hebraism Cat. Harvard 1988 no. 39. ESTC R27480. First published at Rotterdam by Jan van Waesberghe in 1608 the present work is the earliest reaction in print to the presence of Jews and their religion in the Dutch Republic van Rooden. Citing M. Bodian’s Hebrews of the Portuguese Nation R. Po-Chia Hsia describes the cultural context: “Coming initially in the 1590s as Portuguese merchants and Christian converts the so-called ‘New Christians’ Sephardic Jews in fact were welcomed by the Regents of Holland but were strongly opposed by the Reformed clergy. When the conversos reverted to the open practice of Judaism reaction from the Reformed Church was fierce. The predikant Abraham Coster 1575-1620 attacked the Sephardim as an ‘unclean people’ who sought to build a public synagogue ‘in which they can perform their evil and foolish ceremonies and spew forth their gross blasphemies against Christ and his holy gospels as well as their curses against the Christians and Christian authorities’â€. The present edition was later re-issued the following year with identical collation and pagination but designated as “Den 2den druck van nieuws oversienâ€. References: R.
