Frontispiece engraving of Cowley's tomb. Front pastedown with the bookplate of Robert S. Pirie. Wing C-6665; ESTC R21164. ◆Spine and head of rear board sunned a bit of wear to joints and extremities boards tending to splay slightly faint scattered dark flecks to leather text with isolated spots and browning but an excellent copy the binding solid and only minimally worn and internally very fresh and clean. From a distinguished collection in extremely attractive condition and in a fine contemporaneous binding this is the first appearance of the botanical writings of one of the most precocious poets in the annals of English literature. Cowley 1616-67 was producing poetic works of inexplicable sophistication before he had settled into puberty; he published his first volume of verse at 15 and went on to become one of the most popular poets of his day. A staunch royalist who served in the exiled court of Charles I's queen Henrietta Maria he helped encode and decipher messages sent between the monarchy's supporters including the royal couple themselves. Despite having been arrested and imprisoned as a royalist agent at one point Cowley escaped the Cromwell years largely unscathed and retired to the countryside in 1663. Upon his death Cowley was not only given the extraordinary honor of burial in Westminster Abbey noted by the DNB as "the most lavish funeral which had ever been given to a mere man of letters in England" but was also afforded a privileged spot next to the graves of Spenser and Chaucer. Cowley's influence on contemporary poetry was demonstrably deep; his funerary monument pictured in our frontispiece refers to him as "the English Virgil" and Perkin asserts that his "fame as a poet exceeded even that of Milton" during the waning years of the Restoration. The present copy comes from the collection of Robert S. Pirie 1934-2015 an extremely successful lawyer and investment banker who amassed the finest library of 16th and 17th century English literature in private hands during his lifetime. In 1984 he was elected one of the 40 members of the Roxburghe Club the world's oldest society of bibliophiles. Printed for Charles Harper unknown

The spine is worn at the joints particularly at the front some splitting starting at the top and with wear at the top spine end with some fraying. There is wear to edges and corners. The binding is currently sound. Page edges yellowed. Armorial bookplate of Edward Cheney 1803-1884 the art collector and water colour painter of Badger Hall Shropshire to front pastedown. Cheney's note of purchase in Rome in 1833 on fep. Pagination: 14164201662. With frontispiece and vignette to title for the Second Part of the works. Each work has its own title page ad lectorem etc. Pagination restarts with the Third Part. Contents overall very clean and in good to very good condition. There is a mispagination - 16-3-18. Built in the 1750s by Jean David Henchoz a wealthy notary and judge the Grand Chalet was used as a hotel in the following century when it was visited by a distinguished clientele that included Victor Hugo before being bought by the painter Balthus 1908-2001. A cache of documents and publications concealed by the Henchoz family in the eighteenth century in the attics of the Grand Chalet Rossiniere in the Vaudois Alps. Built in the 1750s by Jean David Henchoz a wealthy notary and judge the Grand Chalet was used as a hotel in the following century when it was visited by a distinguished clientele that included Victor Hugo before being bought by the painter Balthus 1908-2001. The collection includes a sequence of seventeenth century documents on vellum that relate to the purchase of the land on which the Grand Chalet stands in Rossiniere. The pamphlets are in very mixed condition but include several with inscriptions by members of the Henchoz family including Gallatin's theses on the Vacuum and Chapuis on Disentery pointing to the family's scientific interests. Top edge a little dusty small stain to fore edge and lower edge.Notes: Around 1669 Amelot de La Houssaye 1634–1706 was appointed legation secretary to the French ambassador in Venice. From this period he drew the information for his "Histoire du gouvernement de Venise" an unsparing description of the political constitution of the city-state published in Paris in 1676. After the publication the outraged protests of the Venetian ambassador led to La Houssaye being imprisoned in the Bastille. The scandal surrounding La Houssaye helped the work to become very popular so that he published a second edition with additions in 1677. The 'Supplément à l'histoire du gouvernement de Venise' provoked further protests from Venice so that the edition was finally banned in France. But even this ban only led to a greater demand for the book so that it was subsequently reprinted in secret. This is the beautiful hand colored portrait of Abraham Ortelius as frontispiece to his "Theatrum Orbis". Engraved by Phillipe Galle. Ortelius was born on 14 April 1527 in the city of Antwerp which was then in the Habsburg Netherlands modern-day Belgium. The Orthellius family were originally from Augsburg a Free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1535 the family had fallen under suspicion of Protestantism. Following the death of Ortelius's father his uncle Jacobus van Meteren returned from religious exile in England to take care of Ortelius. Abraham remained close to his cousin Emanuel van Meteren who would later moved to London. In 1575 he was appointed geographer to the king of Spain Philip II on the recommendation of Arias Montanus who vouched for his orthodoxy. He travelled extensively in Europe and is specifically known to have traveled throughout the Seventeen Provinces; in southern western northern and eastern Germany e.g. 1560 15751576; France 15591560; England and Ireland 1576; and Italy 1578 and perhaps twice or thrice between 1550 and 1558. Beginning as a map-engraver in 1547 he entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as an illuminator of maps. He supplemented his income trading in books prints and maps and his journeys included yearly visits to the Frankfurt book and print fair where he met Gerardus Mercator in 1554. In 1560 however when travelling with Mercator to Trier Lorraine and Poitiers he seems to have been attracted largely by Mercator's influence towards the career of a scientific geographer. The book is an important celebration of Polish history as well as that of Eastern Europe more broadly. Born in Proszowice in 1567 Abraham Bzowski was a precocious scholar mastering Latin and music by the age of ten and studying under French humanists in Secemin. He joined the Dominican Order in Krakow later teaching philosophy and theology in Ferrara and Milan. After serving as prior in Krakow and Wroclaw he was summoned to Rome in 1610 by Pope Paul V and commissioned to continue Cesare Baronio's monumental Annales Ecclesiastici. Bzowski authored nine folio volumes covering 1198-1571 noted for their fidelity to Dominican perspectives though not without criticism. Among his other works are the Quadraginta Sermones super Canticum Salve Regina 1598 the Sacrum Pancarpium 1611 and updated papal biographies including those of Paul V and Gregory XV. Two English printers dipped a toe in the vernacular atlas market at approximately the same time with pocket editions of the Ortelius atlas: These two little books were the earliest world atlases to be published in England and the earliest world atlases with English text R.A. Skelton "Bibliographical Note" in Abraham Ortelius The Theatre of the Whole World. Amsterdam 1968. Both are now extremely rare and they use different series of maps: Shawe used the maps by Arsenius Norton used the older series by Philip Galle. Shawe's epitome was certainly published before the death of Elizabeth I in March 1603; Norton's is dedicated to Mr. Richard Gargrave who was knighted by King James in 1603 so his atlas was published in early 1603 or before. It is generally dated to 1602 although the date 1601 has also been suggested. They were in any case published competitively within months of each other. With 16 numbered engraved views ca. 13 x 16 cm tipped onto blank leaves 17 x 23 cm all hand coloured. 16 ll. with engravings. Extraordinary rare first state of a very fine print series of the Honselaarsdijk palace and gardens at Honselersdijk near Naaldwijk complete with all 16 views. They are all signed numbered and captioned in Dutch and have been coloured by hand. We have not been able to find any other copies of the complete series in the first state.The monumental palace of Honselaarsdijk was built between 1621 and 1647 on the orders of the stadholder Frederik Hendrik 1584-1647 who - together with his wife Amalia van Solms and in the context of their ambition to enhance the position and power of the House of the Dutch stadholder possibly to a Royal status - was involved in a project to build a number of new prestigious castles and manor houses in and around The Hague Huis Ten Bosch Rijswijk and Honselaarsdijk as well in the country Soestdijk Het Loo Dieren etc. He financed the building of Honselaarsdijk mainly with the money coming from the "Silverfleet" captured from the Spaniards by Piet Hein in 1629. A number of important architects were involved with the Honselaarsdijk-project among others the famous Jacob van Campen 1596-1657 and Pieter Post 1608-1669. French garden architects were hired for designing the gardens. King William III further embellished the gardens under the direction of the architect Jacob Roman 1640-1716. As early as 1671 William III was personally involved with the rebuilding of the water supply system at Honselaarsdijk as evidenced by a letter of Christiaan Huygens to his brother Lodewijk. The palace later became known as "Little Versailles". After the death of William III in 1702 the estate was neglected and ultimately demolished in 1815. All that still remains is a part of the garden and parts of the coach-houses.Abraham Blooteling 1640-1690 a pupil of Cornelis Van Dalen II 1636-1664 was a Dutch engraver draughtsman and print seller. His dated prints begin to appear in 1665 and they include portraits biblical mythological and genre subjects as well as six views of Amsterdam after Jacob van Ruisdael and two of the Jewish burial-ground in Ouderkerk 1670 also after van Ruisdael. From 1672-78 he worked in London with Gerard Valck. His major contribution was in the development of the new technique of mezzotint specifically the invention of the rocker the tool used in the technique. In England the technique was adopted with such success that it later became known as the "English Manner". Blooteling was again in Amsterdam by September 1678 when he acted as godfather to his nephew Abraham Valck but he kept up his contacts with London.Between 1681 and 1685 his presence in The Hague is recorded. During these years he engraved a major view of Honselaarsdijk 385 x 482 mm after the design by Abraham Begheyn alias Bega 1637-1697. It is likely that he engraved our 16 views in the same year probably also after the drawings by Abraham Bega. However both the 16 views and the bird's eye view are now exceptionally rare. In fact the present 16 views were until now only known in their second state the reissue by Gerard Valck 1651/2-1726 in his Veues et perspectives de Loo Honslardyck et Soestdyck chasteau & maison de plaisance du Roy de la Grande Bretagne 1695. The views in the second state are numbered differently and lack Blooteling's name.Some of the views have been cut a few millimetres short on the right hand side two of the blank leaves with a crease and two pinprick holes in the bottom margin. Contemporary quarter calf over dark brown pastepaper boards skilfully rebacked. Images of Moses and Aaron at engraved title excised the seven small engraved vignettes along with letterpress text of engraved title and imprint mounted on old paper. Old marginal repairs at main title resulting in slight loss of initial letters along right margin and several leaves; slight strictly marginal worming and occasional tears. Stained throughout sometimes heavily though not impairing legibility. Map mounted to reinforce tears with virtually no loss of text or engraved imagery apart from printed border at right side. A fair copy at best; despite all defects the half-page engraved illustrations have survived intact with minimal staining. Housed in new maroon buckram slipcase. First edition of this gorgeously illustrated work now referred to simply as the Amsterdam Haggadah. The first such work to be illustrated with copperplate engravings it ranks among the most imitated of the Jewish manuals for the Passover seder. The popularity of these illustrations can be attested by the huge number of reprint editions over the centuries. Fourteen finely printed half-page engravings appear throughout the text. Some of these images illustrate the traditional content of the Passover seder or the Exodus story while others reference other biblical tales. Images include: the Rabbis of Bene Brak discussing the Passover story the four sons Abraham smashing the idols of his father Abraham welcoming the three angels Moses slaying the Egyptian overseer the rescuing Moses from the river Moses and Aaron coming to Pharaoh w/ staves turning to snakes the ten plagues the Egyptian army drowning in the Red Sea the Exodus the receiving of the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai the eating of the Pascal Lamb King David composing his psalms and finally an exterior view of the Jewish Temple with the cityscape of Jerusalem in the background. All images are captioned with relevant passages in Hebrew. The engravings were all created by Abraham ben Jacob a German convert to Judaism who had moved to Amsterdam although some sources over the years misattributed them to financier Moses Wiesel 6 of which were adaptations and/or modifications of previous images by Swiss artist MatthÃ¤us Merian 1593-1650 from his original work "Icones Biblicae" 1625-30. In addition to the in text engravings there is famously fold-out engraved biblical map of the Holy Land in a notable format. Measuring a total of 19.5 by 11.5" the map shows the land of Israel the Wilderness of Sinai and Egypt in landscape orientation looking eastward towards the top of the map. It traces the journey of the Israelites starting with the Exodus from Egypt through the Sinai and into the Land of Israel. The map is detailed showing the areas of the twelve tribes important locations and cities as well as geographic features including the Red Sea Mount Sinai the Dead Sea the Sea of Galilee and many others. Additional illustrations appear near the bottom along with a legend. This beautiful work also by Abraham ben Jacob is considered among the earliest if not the first map of its kind to be printed within a Hebrew publication. It is now known to have been heavily based on the previously printed 1620 map in Hebrew by Jacob ben Abraham Zaddiq and Abraham Goos 1590 - ca. 1643 which itself was based on the map of 1590 by Christian Kruik van Adrichom Adrichem printed in Latin. Text throughout is printed in Hebrew with smaller text in Rashi script underneath containing famous commentary on the Passover Haggadah by acclaimed Portuguese Rabbi and scholar Isaac ben Judah Abarbanel 1437-1508. The verso of the title page contains the order of the Passover seder with brief instructions in both Ladino Judeo-Spanish and Yiddish Judeo-German a nod to the subtitle which references both the Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions. Provenance and annotations: Full page of text appx. 1500 words in neat Hebrew cursive at front endleaf which discusses aspects of the Haggadah text; inscription in German at front endleaf by Isidor Adler who mentions his friend Hermann Mechlenburg dated March 1906; old annotations throughout in at least two hands. In one notable instance the Hebrew phrase l'shana ha-ba'ah be-hamburg next year in Hamburg! has been added in fine block characters above the traditional phrase l'shana ha-ba'ah bi-yerushalayim next year in Jerusalem.
