171761880Nuremberg.: Johann Baptist Homann. 1717. A beautifully engraved hand coloured map of North East Germany showing the area around Erfurt in detail. In the centre of the map is a small plan of Erfurt which is also shown as a panoramic view at the foot of the map and titled 'St. Petersburg'. An elaborate decorative title cartouche in the lower right corner depicts allegorical figures surrounded by the produce of the land including sheaves of wheat; a beehive; and a cornucopia of fruits. Cherubs holding a coat of arms float up from the scene on the right while on the lower left a centaur sits meditatively beneath a pine tree amongst slaughtered cattle. Physical features of the area are illustrated and farming areas shown by fields which criss-cross across the map. A clear dark impression the work of an outstanding German cartographer who in 1715 was appointed as imperial geographer by Emperor Charles VI. This map also includes "Schwan See" Swan Lake under a town of the same name which has since disappeared. Shelf wear top and bottom of spine corners bumped and beginning to fray covers grubby stained. Previous owners signature dated 1924 on front end paper some foxing spotting to some pages of preface creasing to some pages and odd pencil annotation. Cook's original purpose in exploring the region west of Greenland was ostensibly to organise a hunting expedition. Just north of Etah Cook decided that conditions were good enough for an assault on the North Pole and set out on his journey over the sea ice with two Eskimo companions two sledges and 26 dogs. Cook is one of the most controversial figures in the history of polar exploration. His supporters claim that he was the hero of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition the first to climb Mt. McKinley and the first to stand at the North Pole allegedly only four days before Robert Peary. Others insist that Cook faked his claims to both Mt. McKinley and the North Pole and continued a career of deceit by using the mail to defraud investors in a Texas oil promotion for which he was convicted and spent five years in federal prison. Two volumes small octavo pp xvi 348; xii 345 two page publisher's catalogue dated January 1856 at rear of second volume illustrated with two frontispieces a red plate of the Dhurma Rajah's seal and wood engravings in the text. Both volumes are original green cloth and have been neatly recased and rebacked with the original spines which are lacking pieces at the head and tail laid down the original yellow endpapers retained. Volume 1 - the hinge after the frontispiece cracking but absolutely no weakness the fore-edge is a little uneven and in three places it is worn into a slight groove. Volume 2 is better throughout. Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker 1817 - 1911 was a British botanist and explorer. He was a founder of geographical botany and Charles Darwin's closest friend. For twenty years he served as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew succeeding his father William Jackson Hooker and was awarded the highest honours of British science. Volume 1 very large folding map neatly repaired tears not affecting map. Fridtjof Nansen October 10 1861 - May 13 1930 was born in Store Frøen Oslo. He made his first voyage to Greenland waters in a sealing ship in 1882 and in 1888-89 succeeded in crossing the Greenland icefield on skis from East to West. In 1893 he sailed to the Arctic in the Fram a purpose-built round-hulled ship later used by Roald Amundsen to transport his expedition to Antarctica which was deliberately allowed to drift north through the ice a journey that took more than three years. When it was apparent that Fram would not reach the North Pole Nansen accompanied by Hjalmar Johansen 1867-1923 continued north on foot and reached 86 degrees 14 seconds N the highest latitude then attained. The two men were forced to spend the winter surviving on walrus blubber and polar bear meat on Frans Josef's Land where they eventually connected with a British expedition. Nansen was professor of zoology and oceanography at the University of Christiania now Oslo and Norwegian ambassador in London 1906-08. After World War I Nansen became League of Nations high commissioner for refugees in which capacity he originated the Nansen passport for refugees. Each leaf bears back-to-back photographs so there is a total of 20 photographs all inter-leaved with tissue guards having the same alligator pattern. Every photograph has an annotation in red and in a very legible hand. A lovely little album.In actuality the album is primarily concerned with sights in the Great North. The only photograph taken in the U.S. is a moody and eerie shot of the turbulent waters off Point Reyes. The one succeeding that is titled "Government Street Victoria B.C." Among other pictures are the Russian Church and trading post at Sitka. There is a very nice photograph of downtown "Skaguway." The tour must have originated in Spokane as there is one photograph of "Spokane Passengers at Pitchfork Falls." Their clothing makes this album a tad dateable. It's not a loud declamatory album but rather one of quietness and appreciation. The photographer surely an amateur. had a real feel for the frozen North. N.p. hardcover
